 Lein does not know why she longs for things she cannot name. The stars draw her away, winking at her as though they share some old secret she doesn't remember. They beckon her to follow them but never tell her why, or where they are going. She has always felt displaced, in her clan of origin and every one since as she has skipped across Sornieth, trying to follow a feeling that blows as fickle as the wind. Simple words or sights bring a deep ache to her chest and a longing to say words that die on her tongue.

For years, she has tried so subdue the feeling. She has turned to card readers, seers, travelers and apothecaries, seeking a cure to the creeping darkness, but nothing bears the answers she seeks.

If she is meant for something, she has no idea what it is, or where to find it. Perhaps she is to carry the Clan, to lead its members to the place the universe has slotted for them. Perhaps she is destined to stare always at the stars, to listen to their ceaseless whispers but never truly hear them. Perhaps she will never know.
