In her youth, she hungered for adventures beyond those found in her home in the seaside cottage. For a while, she could be satiated by the few books and scrolls kept dry and mildew-free by her mother. Even the most vivid stories can only be lived a few hundred times before they become stale, however. So she awaited her chance to grasp a life of her own.

She found it, she thought, when she eloped with the handsome astronomer and his elegant sidekick.

In Flynn, she found a great love. His enthusiasm for his work a source of endearment, an obsession only matched by his vigor for life. She wed him after only a quarter year, and she was happy to follow him wherever he led.

It was in Yvette, however, that she found her closest friend. The young girl became her confidant, her ally. Her sister. Isolated as she had been, alone with her mother by the Tidelord's Sea, she was unused to this sort of companionship, and often thought herself a bit too clingy, but the girl never complained. Perhaps she was too polite to say anything, or maybe she had been lonely, too. Hopala liked to think it was the latter.

Now, of course, the tides have changed. There is no more adventure, there is no one left to follow. Now Hopala finds herself guiding the family. Her husband has become an empty shell, only going through the motions of life, of happiness. Flynn would not have a reason to hold on were it not for her, she is sure of it. It is only by her coaxing and encouragement that he has lasted as long as he has.

In the heart of the Plaguelands, she built her library, filled with endless scrolls and tomes recounting tales of others’ accomplishments, their deeds, their journeys. Surrounded by the excitement she had hoped for, long ago, but was not hers to have. Though she smiles, welcomes guests, shares her collection, helped them in their quests for knowledge, she had never felt more alone.

When the Council first suggested the move to Dragonhome, Hopala was tepid about the idea, at best. For one, it would be difficult to move the entirety of her library, and for another, she was not certain Flynn would be able to withstand the migration.
