MINSKA
AIRSHIP PILOT Nakola lay on the softest of grass as she stared at the book that lay between her paws. It was a calm, mild afternoon. The sun shone bright in the sky as the wind rustled the leaves at the top of the trees. The Skydancer was laying in the sun with the intent of soaking in the heat. It wasn’t often she was able to be outside without others bothering her. She preferred quiet, and that meant she often stayed within the confines of the library with her books. Nakola smiled. This particular day was a special day. Minska would be coming back to the clan that afternoon. He flew around their world delivering items and messages. He was the one chosen for the job as his flights could be dangerous. He was up to the task after all. Minska was one of the bravest dragons she had ever gotten to meet. The female Skydancer fell in love with him at first sight. He was bold, happy and outgoing. “They do say opposites attract,” he told her one day when he professed his love to her. “I fell in love with your quietness and keen eye when I first noticed you in the library.” She had to laugh when she told him almost the same thing. She believed that opposites do attract. They were proof of such a statement. The Skydancer lifted her head from the book she was reading as she felt a presence appear beside her. Soft preening and nuzzling was soon to follow. Nakola looked to her side to spot a very familiar Skydancer. She smiled at Minska. When had he gotten back? She didn’t even know he had arrived. “Minska,” she chirped before nuzzling against the fluff on his neck. “I didn’t realize you had returned.” “I wanted it to be a surprise,” he chuckled. “I didn’t expect you to be out here though. I looked in the library first.” Nakola jolted for a moment as she moved away from him. “Well, I just thought … you’ve been gone for so long … that I’d meet in the spot we got together … on the same date?” Minska stared at her before realization flashed through his eyes. Oh no. Was it today, a year later, they had gotten together as mates? He had forgotten. He didn’t get Nakola anything for their anniversary. His fur and feathers fluffed at the thought of angering her for forgetting such an important date. He didn’t know how to tell her that he had forgotten their anniversary. Nakola laughed, a sound which caused him to jump. She moved to preen and nuzzle him. “You forgot, didn’t you?” she said lightheartedly. When she didn’t hear a reply from him, the Skydancer continued, “It’s okay. I understand. You were away for such a long time. I honestly didn’t expect you to remember. You’re such a busy bee, Minska. I’m glad to be able to spend today with you is all.” “Today and all of this week,” he muttered. “I’m taking the rest of it off. I need to rest too. And, I have been missing you …” Nakola stared at him in surprise before she got the biggest grin on her face. She couldn’t believe he was going to stay for the rest of the week. The Skydancer tackled her mate in delight before laying on him and nuzzling Minska. She was the happiest she had ever been in the last few days. She would admit she had missed him a lot as well when he went on his delivery trips never knowing if he would return. Nakola worried a lot about her bold flyer. “I’m happy,” she muttered as she gave him attention and affection. “Let’s spend the week celebrating our anniversary.” “Yes,” he agreed. “Let’s spend the week celebrating our anniversary. It’ll be a week-ersary anniversary. We can do it every year.” Nakola stared at him before laughing. “Week-ersary, really Minska?” Leave it to her mate to come up with a name for it.
