Proteus considers it fortunate that he was able to become the clan’s librarian, as it has allowed him the opportunity to spend time with his father; that the time they spend together is spent shut up with stacks of books and parchment is not something he is particularly put out by, and he enjoys the quiet, something he perhaps inherited from his father.

Although it takes a good deal of work to encourage Proteus to lighten up - and fermented wine is sometimes needed - he can be funny and raucous when he does, bringing good cheer to his companions, but always quiets again when his work beckons.
