Being the master of spies for the clan, he was of course captivated by the goings on at the trading post. One of his employees had heard that Baldwin was going through some kind of change. Believing it to be silly panic and foolishness, he quickly put the report aside. The following day, another came to him with the same information. Layet decided he needed to see for himself...

..and went from a handsome Spiral to some kind of creature than none had seen before. He returned to the lair under the cover of night and hid in his den for three days straight, trying to come to terms with his transformation. He'd gotten too close to the cauldron, his curiosity overriding his sense of self-preservation. He was lucky to be alive, really. Pearlcatchers may have had a different reaction to it than Spirals for all he knew. The change was gradual, but obvious. Layet mourned his dashing good looks.

Finally, after a week, Rythika forced her way into his bright and airy quarters to find out what was wrong with him. They'd been friends for as long as she could remember and she was worried that no one had seen a trace of him for so long. He may be a spymaster, but he could never resist flirting with the trainees. Rythika found him burrowed under his bed of cushions and silks. She took one look at his disfigured body and ran straight to Viola, hoping she could find a way to reverse it.
It was too late, Viola clucked over him as she examined his new form. It had gotten into his bloodstream and changed his genetic makeup. Baldwin's ancient magic was too strong for her to counter. She offered to create a new glamour for him to make the best of his new look. Layet said nothing. Rythika thanked her and led her out of his quarters.

Returning after a moment, Rythika repeated Viola's offer. "I think it'll make you feel better to gain some cool spines or something. Besides, I'm sure the ladies will love you even more now." Layet gave her a scathing look of disbelief. "Think about it, you'll be the only one of your kind for miles around. You're new and exciting!" As she continued spinning his misfortune into opportunity, Layet drew himself up and shook off the cushions that he'd hidden under.
"First things first, I need a new lair. It feels like I need to burrow down into the earth to be comfortable. And wet. The failed tunnel under the moat should do nicely..."
