Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.

Unlike her mate, Eva remembers. She was born into a different clan than the Fae who would become her mate; a diverse community that was, to put it bluntly, absolutely martial. There was no strength that did not come from strength at arms, and as the daughter of the Warlord who held the divisive group together, Eva was expected to be strong.

She was.

Despite her size, Eva was a warrior with a reputation; known for moving fast, striking hard, and her ability to think quickly in conflict. She knew where to strike, and when, and it offset her diminutive nature enough to make her an asset in a fight. In fact, there was nothing about Eva that wasn't suited to her clan, and her future as its leader. It was a destiny she took a great deal of pride in.

For all her strategic ability, however, Eva never saw the knife in the dark. Her brother - her twin - had managed to conceal his jealousy of his sister's prowess, and the brewing bitterness he felt at her easy path to heir and leader. Shame drove Eva, and her ruined eye, to leave her clan after the assault. She could never forgive her brother for his treachery, nor expect her father's dragons to follow her after such a failure on her own part.

She wandered, drifting into and out of clans, unsettled but so uncertain of what she was looking for. At least, until she met Eustace.

The Fae was unlike any dragon she had ever known. Eustace was gentle, deeply rooted, and compassionate. In him, Eva sensed a quiet wisdom and strength that was counter to all of the ideology she had grown up with, and ascribed to. If Eustace was immediately drawn to her vivacity, Eva was enamored of his peace. Both were outcast, but it didn't seem to matter much to them. They began to travel, together, and for the first time in far too long Eva didn't feel so alone.

After some time, Eva and Eustace encountered a lone male Fae, called Birch. She could easily see that the two males were immediately smitten with one another, and it didn't take much coaxing on her part to bring Birch into their relationship. Having the other male around made it feel more like a family, like the start of something new, and when Eva announced that they would soon be expanding their family, the two males immediately set about finding a place that could be home.

Eustace liked the look of an ancient grove of trees; there was water close by, and a series of tunnels that could serve as dens, and a clearing that let the sunlight shine down on their skins. It would do, Eva thought, as she lay her first nest. There were only two eggs, two precious new lives, when she had finished. Eva proved to be a fierce mother, enough so that she had difficulty accepting the two abandoned eggs Birch later found and added to her nest.

In the end, she was glad for her adoptive children.

As time passed, and her children grew, Eva encouraged each to find his or her own path. She was not the nurturing parent Eustace was - indeed, she had returned to her fierce roots as their clan expanded - but Eva knew she did not want parental expectations to become the wedge in her family, that it had been for herself and her brother.

Alas, history does often repeat itself.

Oakheart and Peleides, opposite in so many ways, struggled with one another. Struggle became conflict, and conflict became death; and though it broke her own heart, Eva was forced to banish her own firstborn child for the sake of the life, and the clan, that she and her lovers had built. Her beautiful, rooted, Eustace has become lost in his own mind and grief, and with the faithful Birch at her side, Eva struggles to teach Darach to become the leader his father has always been.

She does not know who these newcomers are, or what they want, but Eva is more than willing to get a little blood on her claws, if that's what it takes to defend her family and her home.
