Biography

SMAUG GILTGLEAM
The Golden Treasurer

Smaug hatched in the Wispwillow Grove, and spent much of his time avoiding the frequent teasing over his size- he was the runt of his clutch. Even then a vain streak ran through him, and a love of all that glitters, golden or not. That's not to say he's greedy, though he does have to be restrained from impulse buying particularly nice shinies. But he's an empathetic dragon; Smaug assumes other dragons love their valuables as much as he values his own, and acts accordingly. As a youngster living in the Tangled Grove, he came upon some coins and gems strewn in a row, clearly fallen from someone's pockets. He piled it up and curled up around it, resolved to protect it until its rightful owner came back.

Soon Rhea came rushing by, driven to distraction in her search for her lost money. She was greatly relieved- and amused- to see the undersized hatchling solemnly watching over her treasure, and even more relieved by how willingly he parted with it. Both recalled the occasion when, not much later, a still-young Smaug wandered into the Diabase Demesne on his search. On this visit, Smaug was shocked to discover the clan didn't have an official guard for their vault, and decided that he himself would safeguard it. Eventually, when he was full-grown (and disappointed by his size as ever), he was appointed keeper of the vault.

Smaug doesn't just protect the clan's treasure and gems; he also guards his clanmates' personal hoards. All dragons hoard something, and many of them hoard so much that it won't all fit in their dens. It's this overflow that Smaug carefully stores and watches over. He takes his job very seriously, as he's made the vault his charge; he even worked with Mahina to make sure that it's as safe as possible. It lies at the end of a narrow hallway, its entrance barely big enough for Smaug to squeeze through. He knows he's a terrible fighter- he was “politely” asked to never work with the reserve warriors again due to his ineptitude- but figures that if the clan's ever raided, he can at least block the door.

He's still a dandy, still overly fond of shinies, and still the smallest Guardian he knows. For the most part, Smaug is amiable, easy-going, some might say silly. They wouldn't say, for they don't know, that Smaug is also very insecure. Many would raise an eyebrow to see an air-headed, undersized, combat-challenged Guardian keeping watch over something so important, and he is painfully aware of that. He wants to be taken seriously, but frets that the other dragons think he's not up to doing his job- or worse, that they might be right.

Smaug is accompanied in his work by a loyal Loga; a fittingly rare and marvelous creature for a dragon with an appreciation of all that is golden.
