Biography
Sparkles
kind | shy | adventurous
Named for his crystalline hide, Sparkles loved the stories his father told him of the world.
He loved the stories of the far-off reaches of the world. Nestled in the massive trees of the Viridian Labyrinth, he felt too safe. He wanted to know the dangers of the world, and wanted to meet new dragons and make friends. He wasn’t a fool, as many in his clan thought he was, but the pull of adventure was too much for him.
Eventually, he left with the well wishes of his clan. He was a shy dragon, and left at
night, without all of the fanfare his clan would undoubtedly give. He packed a large bag to the brim with food and baubles, and set off, flying for the Dragonhome. When Sparkles introduced himself, any who heard his name laughed. As he continued on with his adventure, he started to detest his name.
It seemed like everyone he met judged him on his name, thinking him to be a stuck-up
child. Once he got out of the Dragonhome, he moved on to the Tangled Woods, Sunbeam Ruins, and Sea of a Thousand Currents. Every place his journey took him, he felt more and more dejected, and almost turned back to the Viridian Labyrinth, until he got to the Ashfall Wastes.
The food he had brought with him had been depleted weeks before, and he had relied
upon his hunting skill to feed himself. Soon, he was looking for food in his new surroundings.
Wandering, Sparkles saw many, but wasn’t able to catch any of the quick creatures. He
settled for some plants he found, and munched on them as he continued. It wasn’t long before hunger forced him to the ground to hunt again, with the same results. The heat was so intense that it made heat waves, and made Sparkles waver. He shook his head, and lifted himself into the air, looking for a clan to stop at.
For a few days, Sparkles continued, trying and failing to hunt in the intolerable heat. He
took to chewing on dry plants that he scavenged while on the move. But, eventually, the hunger stopped him. It was near sunset, and Sparkles was determined to find shelter for another night. He started walking, saving his energy as much as he could manage.
He hadn’t found food for a few hours when he heard quick wing beats. Sparkles turned
his head to the side, trying to find the source of the sound. It sounded like a Spiral, but he couldn’t see it anywhere.
Finally, he called out. “Hello? Please, I need help.”
Sparkles jumped when he heard a voice directly behind him. “Well, it certainly looks like
you need food. Can you not hunt by yourself?”
“Yes, I can. Usually.” Sparkles turned around, and saw a black Spiral, curling herself
around a tall, thin rock sticking out of the ground. “I don’t know what it is, but I have been having problems here.”
“What is your name, stranger?”
Suddenly shy, Sparkles mumbled his name.
“What was that? Speak up.”
He sighed and said, “Sparkles. That’s my name.”
He turned his face away as the Spiral giggled. “Well, at least I’m not the only one with a
self-explanatory name. I’m Nightfire.”
Surprised, Sparkles turned back to Nightfire. After so long being teased about his name,
it was a wonder to find someone not laughing at him. They talked, and Nightfire brought him to her clan’s lair. They welcomed him in and gave him food, even with the late hour. The next morning, they were kind when he said he would continue on, and even refilled his bag full of food for his journey.
He flew to the Shifting Expanse, Windswept Plateau, Starfall Isles, and even the Scarred
Wasteland, meeting all sorts of dragons. But now, he didn’t cringe when he told someone his name, knowing that there was someone who wouldn’t laugh at him. Even at the end of his journey when he flew down to the Southern Icefield, he thought of Nightfire often, and returned to the Ashfall Wastes. He found Nightfire soaring high in the sky, where her dark color stood out among the clouds.
Sparkles surprised the Spiral, and was led back to the clan that he had visited a few
months earlier. They welcomed him back, and he joined the clan. Now, with his own stories of the world, he amazes young hatchlings with his tales of far-off places.
