The Scout

Nightfire always seemed to be going somewhere. Even to other Spirals, she seemed odd with her constant energy. She would talk in her sleep, and seem to be awake, but have no recollection of the conversation the following morning. She was an anomaly in her clan, an oddball. She often dreamed of traveling to the farthest reaches of the world, and leaving the frozen wastelands of her home behind. She wanted to go to the beautiful Viridian Labyrinth, and to the mysterious Starfall Isles. But, most of all she wanted to go to the Ashfall Wastes. She hated the cold, and hearing the stories of the extreme warmth in the magma rivers running from the volcano, she had a dream to get there. Even though her clanmates didn't want her to leave, she held her dreams high, until she finally left for the Ashfall Wastes. She left alone, but many said goodbye. As she flew into the air, she caught the many gold coins her clan mates threw up for her to catch. They were parting gifts, a sign of good luck, especially when she caught every coin thrown to her. She flew off, towards the Frigid Floes, the thing that marked the northern edge of the Southern Icefield. From there, she made her way around the Starfall Isles, and onto the Windswept Plains, avoiding the Scarred Wasteland as much as possible. When she finally arrived at the edge of the Ashfall Wastes, she had been flying for almost two weeks. When she flew over the first magma rivers, Nightfire felt herself being shot up into the air, rising on a hot updraft. Her spirits rose with those updrafts, and she twirled through the air, exultant. It was an adventure the likes of which she had never known, and soon enough she had found a friendly clan to join. Of course, within the columns of ash and smoke of the Ashfall Wastes, she blended in perfectly and became a scout for her new clan. It was a job that kept her busy and moving, which she had no qualms with. It kept her meeting new dragons, picking up messages and young hatchlings that found their way to the clan. |
