Codie
The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Hyperactivity is the Spiral’s curse, but for Codie, the feeling of restlessness runs deeper than that. He was adrift when he first came to the clan: Jule found him wandering the jungle beneath the icecap, bereft of a name, of memories. He couldn’t tell her where he’d come from or how he’d gotten into this state. And so she had taken him back home, and there he had stayed.

It was fortunate that Jule had found him. The jungle could be a dangerous place, and there was no guarantee that other dragons who’d picked up Codie would’ve treated him well. But the Imperial was a gentle guide, and Codie settled down under her care. He found himself entranced by the magical supplies traded by the clan, as well as by the strangers who sometimes visited, garbed in shadows and with stars and spells dancing on their clawtips. The young Spiral frequently made excuses to sit nearby as they practiced their feats of prestidigitation. The magicians, amused by his awe, began sharing their secrets with him, and soon Codie had his own repertoire of card and sleight-of-hand tricks.

Thanks to this interest in magic, he has found a job at the Coven. His seemingly boundless energy matches Rinzler’s drive to work, and as the Imperial’s assistant, Codie feels that he has a purpose now. He is grateful for that: Even if that purpose consists of helping the grumpy Imperial process orders, it’s still better than the mysterious, gaping void he has in place of memories and a past.

Jule continues to assist him in expanding the Coven’s inventory, and he has another ray of light in his life: Pharia, his lover. The Imperial is as passionate about magic as Codie is, and they have shared many happy moments together. Just knowing that she is there for him is always enough to calm Codie—his heart continues fluttering, true, but out of love, not anxiety.

He reminds himself of this whenever the uncertainty of his past looms large. He tells himself that he’s more fortunate than most to have a home, a job, a lover. He doesn’t seem to evince any magic of his own, and though other dragons have their suspicions about his abilities, they keep these to themselves. They do not wish to disappoint Codie, not when he’s already leading a fortunate life...almost too fortunate, some would say.
