FEATHERS AND FLAMES

A STORY OF AINOA

"I survived because the fire inside burned brighter than the fire around me." -Joshua Graham

>> story written by dragonglimmer <<

The fire blazed high and bright as the screams rang through the air. Heat and smoke saturated Ainoa's every breath as she sprinted, frantic, through the fiery wreckage of her clan. Smoldering rubble lay in ashes among the still-burning, bigger structures. Lovingly tended homes, shops, beautiful gardens; all destroyed. Her life, everything she had known, was disintegrating to ashes in front of her eyes. The home she had loved so much, cherished so dearly - crumbling. And she could do absolutely nothing to save it.

She weaved through the flames, dancing a deadly dance through the devastation. It was a struggle to breathe, to run; her muscles were growing weaker, her lungs tired as the incessant smoke invaded her nostrils. The revolting scent of burning fur and flesh swirled with the smoke, and Ainoa wanted to retch as she thought of her friends, the ones she had known, dying slowly as the fire ate through their bodies. Another series of screams burst out from behind her, the cries of suffering, terrified dragons. Dragons burning. Dragons dying.

Tears ran down Ainoa's face as the screams cut off, one by one. The crackling of the fires seemed to resonate in her ears as waves of grief rolled through her, nearly sending her crashing down to the bloodsoaked ground. But she had to go on. She had to find her sister.

She couldn't save everyone, but maybe she could save the one she loved the most.

Suddenly, the terrified scream of a tundra rang out from Ainoa's left. She gasped, and then choked back a cough as hot smoke poured into her lungs. Stumbling, she jerked her body to the left, barreling past the ruins of yet another unidentifiable structure. Another scream, closer. And through the din, Ainoa could just make out the resonating call of her sister as she begged.

"NO! PLEASE! SOMEBODY, HELP ME!"

Rage joined the fear as Ainoa pushed herself to run harder, faster. She had to reach her in time. She jumped over smoldering wreckage, skidded through slick blood and ash as she followed the sounds of Iodra's pleading. She was almost... almost there... Ainoa burst into a clearing in the fire, her eyes locking on her kneeling sister, just as a massive obelisk slashed his claws across Iodra's throat. All of the air seemed to be sucked from Ainoa's lungs as she stumbled, eyes wide with shock and disbelief. No. No, no, no, no. Not her. She is all I have...

Without wasting another moment, refusing to let the panic and grief well up inside of her, she sprinted toward Iodra's broken body, heedless of the massive obelisk. She had to be alive. She had to be. But seconds before Aiona reached her sister, the obelisk grabbed her, his muscled arms wrapping tightly around her wings and throat, holding her back. Fury overrode her common sense, and Ainoa snapped and scrabbled furiously at the obelisk's armored limbs. He had... he had hurt her. He had hurt Iodra. With a startled intake of breath, the obelisk flinched as Ainoa raked her claws across his skin, trailing bright red ribbons of blood behind them. "How dare you," he hissed. Ainoa shook with anger, still struggling, her teeth snapping wildly. "LET ME GO, YOU MONSTER!"

He tensed, and without warning, lifted the arm pinning her wings. Ainoa immediately started to beat them frantically against his chest, trying to get away, trying to escape... but a sudden, searing pain slashed through her as he brought his freed talons down across her head. There was a flash of light, and half her world went dark, the other half shrouded in curtains of red as blood cascaded from the gashes he had inflicted on her face. The pain was overwhelming. It was horrible. It was like nothing Aiona had ever known before; but it didn't make her stop struggling, her need to reach Iodra overpowering every other feeling inside of her.

"NO! NO!" Shrieked Aiona. IODRA!" She thrashed and struggled against Tuhota's massive arms, once again locked around her body, to no avail. "LET ME GO!"

Suddenly, a cold voice broke through her cries, freezing her in place, sending skittering shivers down her spine.

"Let her go, Tuhota."

Without argument, the obelisk promptly released the struggling tundra. Ainoa stumbled dizzily, teetering on unsteady feet as a fresh wave of pain surged through her. But she regained her balance quickly, racing over to where her sister lay on the ground. Frantic, trembling, Ainoa reached out gentle paws, turning Iodra's head gingerly to face her, praying to the Earthshaker for a miracle, for mercy...

She was dead.

Aiona's scream of grief shattered the air as her heart seemed to break into thousands of tiny pieces, each one pricking her soul with pain and fury. As she howled her heartbreak into the smoky air, that cold voice spoke again, closer this time. It sounded almost uninterested, casual, observing unfeelingly as Aiona's being tore itself to shreds.

"Why do you care so much for a single dragon, little one? This is why it is dangerous to love someone," it tsked. "When they inevitably surrender to the clutches of death, it simply destroys you. Why mourn a single life, so small in the face of this world, when you could simply avoid the pain, the grief, by never caring at all?"

Ainoa whirled, anger sparking, burning like the flames that surrounded the three dragons. She snarled at the one who had spoken - he was a gray skydancer, scarred and arrogant, with cold, cold eyes. "You know nothing of love. Do not speak to me of love, you unfeeling tyrant!"

With a blur of speed, he shot forward. Ainoa stumbled back in surprise, but the skydancer grabbed her chin, snarling as he brought his snout up to hers. She froze, captured in his gaze.

"I should kill you now, just for that. But I am merciful, so I shall let you live... under one condition." Aiona stared, furious, into the skydancer's eyes. He merely regarded her angry expression with slight amusement. "You shall accept me as your god. For I am god. I am Tuhkat. I rule over all, every life, every inch of land I decide to claim." Ainoa simply continued to stare, anger fading and numbness taking over, as the image of her beloved Iodra burned into her mind. Heedless of the skydancer, she started to tremble violently, silent sobs wracking her body. No tears flowing from the single eye she had left, but she felt the anguish keenly. Did she even want to continue living? Was it worth it, to carry this grief, this pain? It would be with her for the rest of time, unrelenting, unforgiving.

Tuhkat's sharp talons tightened on her face, jerking her out of her mind and back into her smoky nightmare. She looked at his face - really looked. It was a cruel one, sharply angled. He might have been handsome but for the deep scar slashed across one of his icy blue eyes, pale and twisted. As his gaze burned into her, the mask behind his eyes started to crumble, and Ainoa caught a glimpse of what was really inside of him before he slammed his walls back up again, brilliant blue stare flashing furiously. She had seen many things, hidden behind his regard, twisted and shadowy and painful. But chief among them had been an insane thirst for power. He snapped his teeth, claws near to drawing blood as he yanked her face closer to his own.

"I am god," he snarled, his ice-cold eyes glittering. "Say it! SAY IT!"
Ainoa's tears suddenly overflowed, and fear seeped through the fractured crags of her emotions. She sobbed, hot blood running down her cheeks. The pain throbbed, unbearable, unimaginable. She struggled to take a breath, steel herself, resist the roaring demands of the skydancer. For to give in was to admit defeat, admit that the death of her sister had been in vain. But she felt her resolve weakening, her spirit crumbling as she looked into those cold, brilliant, icy eyes. Eyes that had probably watched with a smile as Tuhota had struck down Iodra. Ainoa's grief crashed down upon her anew, blurring her senses, making her dizzy as she went limp in Tuhkat's grip. She gasped for air, frantic and terrified.

"Please... please!"

"SAY IT!"

The power of his fury roared through Ainoa, crashing over her like a terrible wave. Tuhkat loomed, majestic, anger and power twisting his features, the calm exterior he had worn vanishing completely. His feathers billowed in the smoky wind, framed by flickering orange flames that danced mockingly.

His claws dug even deeper into her chin, piercing the skin; bright ruby drops of blood welled up from beneath his talons. The last of her strength fled her, and Ainoa's head sagged. She closed her remaining eye as more tears slid down her face, mixing with the blood and ash. Iodra... I'm sorry...

"You... are... a g-god," she whimpered.

"I AM GOD!"

"You... you are god," Ainoa whispered, her voice nearly drowned out by the enroaching wildfire, growing ever closer.

Tuhkat's eyes seemed to glow even brighter. Dark satisfaction saturated his smile as he released Ainoa. She fell limply to the ground, sprawling like a broken doll. She felt shattered, fractured. And so, so tired. If she could only sleep...

The voice of the obelisk floated to her ears, breaking through the haze that clouded her mind as she drifted off into the realm of dreams. She barely registered his words; at that moment, she didn't care. She didn't want to be alive anymore. There was nothing, nothing at all, left for her.

"What do I do with this one?" His voice was gruff, disinterested, as he nudged Ainoa roughly with his forepaw.

Tuhkat didn't even glance back at Ainoa as he walked away. "Don't kill her. I'll keep her as... a reminder. Clean her up and carry her back to Chainvine Enclave. If she even survives the trip." He snorted. "She can clean the prison cells."

And Ainoa gave in to the blackness, surrendered yet again to her pain, wishing for sweet, sweet relief from the nightmare that had become her life. But more nightmares only plagued her; she watched, again and again, as Iodra died in front of her. The ever-present fire burned in the background; and floating among the flames whirled the shadows of bloodsoaked, grey feathers.
