Winter Silence

Night will return.

A shooting star...

While the rest of the clan tends to the sick and tries to keep things operational without the ailing members, Tarandrus has taken on the duty of questing for information while more typical newsbringers Henhowl and Ykkerekk are busy closer to home and Terremiar is sick. His travels have taken him back to the whisper-driven realm of the Plague/Shadow border, where rumors are flying among both the clans and the wild veilspun about the return of strange Ancients from above...

*

Tarandrus has returned with news—the Arcane warp was not an attack, but an accident! In fact, the fragment of AstroLab that passed overhead had been routed as best as possible to bypass population centers. He has also brought a guest, in one of the wild aether, to explain things further.

*

Tarandrus has vanished. No one is surprised—he does that sort of thing sometimes. Perhaps some of the strange border sightings are of him? Though they seem awfully large for a small tundra.

Tarandrus is strangely invisible. He sits at the border of clan events, and despite his acid-green fur and bone-colored antlers, he remains unnoticed. Quiet and patient at most times, he responds to most disturbances with a gentle smile, though he is capable of swift cruelty in rare circumstances. Aside from these brief interruptions, he keeps cloaked in unnaturally thick silence.

Since the return to Fire, Tarandrus has resumed his duties as part of the territorial patrol, though he speaks of a desire to return to being a sellclaw and spy when asked. He is certainly keen to launch raids when the clan-leaders sanction them, whether in Water, Lightning, Ice, or as far away as the parched clay deserts of Earth.

Most of the clan, when they consider Tarandrus at all, find him either unnerving or boring. He spends most of his time with his mother, Sprucetip, the head of the patrol, and his odd half-sister Slip. He had a rather vicious rivalry with his much-younger uncle, Ranger, and seems very pleased that the dragon is absent.

Heritage?
Tarandrus's strange demeanor, possible psychic abilities, and antlers have raised the strong possibility among some in the clan that he is somehow part-gaoler, or a throwback, or like Haolurren somehow one in disguise. He has dismissed these ideas readily, and even Explorer seems hesitant to put much stock in them, but the sense of there being something atavistic about him remains.

Craft
When leather goods in the clan are not sourced from Imminnyll, they often come from Tarandrus, especially those prepped for stealth. He is skilled at heat-curing leather and affixing muffling material to metalwork.

Physical description
Tarandrus is a small tundra with long, broad wings and particularly thick, soft fur. Long, bone-white antlers jut out from below his horns, which are long, slim, and downcurved like his mother's. A layer of soft fuzz coats his wing-membranes. He is surrounded by an aura of unnatural silence, whether at rest or in motion, and has a quiet, stroking flight like an owl. He smells of ash and woundwort.

Combat
In battle, Tarandrus relies on strength and fortitude, lashing out with bearlike claws and searing blasts of flame. He is often the last dragon standing, though he has no compunctions about backing out of a losing battle.

Origin
Tarandrus is a child of the clan, hatched during their days in Fire. He was originally intended to be sent to another clan; then, when he went unclaimed, to be trained as a warrior for Flamecaller. After some time, however, it became apparent that he had quietly become part of the clan.

Kin
Tarandrus is the son of Sprucetip and a visiting skydancer, Enchanter. He is nephew to Moonfire, Hedysara, and the much-younger Ranger, and close kin of Kellinlii, Hazard, Firestone, Nightforest, and Comandrus.

Familiar
At Kaichi's behest, Tarandrus is taming this formidable, and ill-tempered, ant.
