Life is short, though I keep this from my children. Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways, a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative estimate, though I keep this from my children. For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird. For every loved child, a child broken, bagged, sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world is at least half terrible, and for every kind stranger, there is one who would break you, though I keep this from my children. I am trying to sell them the world. Any decent realtor, walking you through a real rubbish place, chirps on about good bones: This place could be beautiful, right? You could make this place beautiful. Tale Born an Earth dragon, Equinox felt tied to the ground from birth; tied and tethered to the root of the world. In his travels, however, he came to understand that earth is more than soil. It is home - it is heart, lungs, mother and gravebed. Meeting his partner in Ivy, he found someone more spiritual than he; she allowed Equinox to explore their own identity and interrogate what it meant to be a citizen of Sorneith. For a time they settled in Fairweather, where they took on roles guiding the farmers of the region as to how best to protect the ecology, manage the soil, and provide for the hearth as well as for the ground. After a time, Ivy stepped away from this world to focus on her servitude of the Gladekeeper and maintaining the balance between living things. Equinox is not ready to do so - so they continue her work, the work that they began together, but more than anything closely tends the maple tree planted outside what was their shared den. Traits Equinox comes across as serene, calm and enlightened. This is true; but they are also deeply sorrowful, and see the world through a lens of autumnal turning, of change, of life in its beauty as life inevitably on the trajectory of entropy towards death. |
