Biography

AVALON
the lonely wanderer

Everyone knew that the desert was where all good things went to die.

It was a feverish expanse with dunes that rolled for miles, blocking one’s vision from gauging distance and determining the destination ahead. Owning a compass was an optimist’s objective, but even the tour guides claimed that it was a waste of gold. The lightning farm threw magnetometers off at times, which often resulted in lost parties stumbling through the desert in circles that would have made any Spiral proud. Religious sects like to claim that it was the Stormcatcher’s doing as a form of territorial defence. Tour guides called it a great marketing opportunity. All main commercial entry points into the Shifting Expanse broadcasted signposts advertising ‘rescue packs’ consisting of signal flares and solar-powered prepaid communication devices.

Avalon ignored them all as she soared ahead, bypassing checkpoints and border patrols. The weighty heat was a stark contrast to the seamless air pockets of the Southern Icefield. There were moments when she found it hard to breathe, forcing her to fly between oversized rocks and abandoned wagons that littered the domain. Nothing seemed to help, but one of the border merchants had told her that it was all a mind game. Dragon versus Nature is one of the oldest narratives of all time, he had said. When it’s just you against hills that shrink and expand according to your state of mind, you have to beat it by outsmarting it, and to do that, you have to convince yourself that you’re heading exactly where you’re supposed to go and that everything you do to combat the heat is working in your favour. Create your own reality before the desert designs a mirage for you.

It helped that she had a purpose for being there. Desert tourism was for the gullible, the rich, and the bored, and she was none of those things. The scholars of the Sunbeam Ruins hadn’t been able to give her the answers she needed, and referred her to the Shifting Expanse instead. She remembered the looks they had given her, dismissive at first, but they had whispered amongst themselves with knowing looks that gave little away. Go to the Stormcatcher’s domain, they aired haughtily, this business has nothing to do with us. Or better still, go home. You are young. There are some things in this world that are better off staying unknown.

But what home was that, exactly? Shouldn’t they, as scholars, have empathized with her plight? Not knowing was as cruel an expanse as uncharted ice floes or the shifting sand that permeated this dry space. If knowledge was a burden, then wouldn’t the absence of it also hold true?

Spotting the canyons ahead, she flew low. There were bones that littered the outer corners of countless caves, all of them sucked clean by the creatures that did this, with any remaining collagen charred away by the scorching heat. She saw the remnants of used flare sticks amidst tourist literature and uneaten clothes. Sifting through brittle bones, she found abandoned gear to add to her own, bracing herself for the cold night ahead.
