Biography

The misunderstood seer.

Famine was first invited to the clan long ago for his promised assistance to mages. And he performed his tasks dutifully and with moderate proficiency. However, soon, he started talking about weird phenomena. He claimed to see ill omens befalling clan members before they happened. And his claims were confirmed in short order when these ill omens befell said clan members exactly as promised.

It wasn't long before the clan began to mistrust him. After all, these omens weren't happening before he came along. And when pressed to resolve these issues, he would only look perplexed, saying that things would happen as they happen. But he wasn't proven exactly right; sometimes clan members who were informed of their ill fate ahead of time were able to make alterations, but most of the time they were not able to avoid it, or the knowledge of their ill fate led to make decisions to cause such an ill fate.

The clan wanted him to leave as soon as possible, feeling as if he was only inciting ill will, and would be clear about his actions when pressed. And yet despite all objections, the progenitors ordered him to stay. It wasn't certain whether it was because they thought it was more useful to keep him around in case they were ill omens regardless, or if they decided it would be best to keep an eye on him than cast him out and therefore not have any idea to what hand he's playing. So he stayed.

Famine was never a great speaker or great at speaking their mind. But it soon became clear that Famine wasn't happy in the clan. He would have and tell these omens, try to defend himself, and be the pariah of the clan. Few dragons wanted anything to do with him, not wanting to risk their fates through association. After all, he was only here to cause harm, right?

All were perplexed one day when Famine approached the progenitors and asked to leave the clan. It was odd; if he was causing these events, wouldn't he need to stay close to decide others' fates? Was he having second thoughts? Was it all part of a grand scheme that required distance from his fellow dragons?
No, he was simply sad. He had no friends, few who would even talk to him, fewer who would give him the benefit of the doubt. And his work had all but halted with others' mistrust. He only hesitated because he wanted to continue to warn others of the fates that came to his vision, but it would be futile if no one listened to him or if they fulfilled the prophecy himself. He said perhaps there would be another way to warn others, but it couldn't be like this.

These words were received after some pressing from the progenitors, for Famine had the habit of not quite getting to the point. Which turned out to just be a trait of his. They eventually learned the truth: Famine had had visions all his life, and they would come regardless. He had just learned to live with them. For this and his odd behavior, he was often cast out from clans. He had tried to hone his skills as a mage so he could be of some service, and so when he joined this clan, he had intended to keep his visions a secret. But seeing the ill fates of his clan's companions made him distraught, and he couldn't keep himself from wanting to warn those who gave him their home. And yet he found it was only so much worse. And so, he thought perhaps it was better if he had no home at all, for there was clearly no place for him.

The progenitors refused. It turned out, they had already suspected as much, they just didn't have evidence. Famine was not the first dragon ever to have prophecies. There were even other mages in the clan who could have visions, although theirs was more directed and thus used different tactics. The progenitors thought, if he had good intentions, then it would be worthwhile to keep these visions in mind and be prepared to plan around them, for the progenitors already had. If he had ill intentions, then it would be best to keep him in place and keep him from trying anything worse, which he had never done. They only saw reasons to keep Famine around. So they asked Famine to give their clan one last chance, after the progenitors tried to improve things for him.

First, they promised to give him lessons to be more direct and less roundabout. (A task that turned out to be difficult due to the nature of the visions and how difficult it was to consolidate everything.) But in order to fulfill that promise, they next held a meeting with the clan, explaining the situation. Not all dragons in the clan were on board, although not all of them were verbal about it. They were still skeptical. But following that meeting, some dragons felt guilty, and tried to warm up to him. Other mages in the clan tried to talk to him about his visions, and thus were able to determine for themselves that Famine only had good intent. Through the effort of those who gave him that chance, the rumors about Famine's ill nature began to quell. He was making acquaintances, even--finally--a few friends. And he was given more regard for his work.

But there are always some who remained skeptical, or just wanted nothing to do with him, not all related to his visions. And for newcomers, he was always an intimidating looking dragon, so it would always take them time, if they decided to take the necessary steps to become acquaintances or friends.

Still, Famine was notably happier after the changes, and though he never fully mitigated his speech issues, he continues to provide aid through his visions to this day.
