Biography
Rilvere
The lost prince "I could give you riches, you know," the tengu whispered. "Everything you want. Everything you need." Tickety tap went the tengu's fingers along the surface of one of the little red balls it carried on its neck. "Look and see, look and see!" it demanded, loathsome and jealous of the sinuous serpent. It hopped and leapt from foot to foot in a jittery fashion, as birdfolk were wont. "This could be yours, if you like it to be." It presented the orb to the mountainous dragon, holding it directly in front of the great ruby eye. Rilvere already had what the tengu was offering, this they both knew. Rilvere was a prince, one of a great and ancient line. What could it offer that he did not already have? Rilvere's head reared back, offended by the insinuation that he needed the help of a tengu to get what he wanted. What he wanted he already had, and what he needed he could acquire as easily as he could snap the head off this little insolent beast, he told himself. He chuffed and snorted, sneered, but no amount of posturing could hide the truth in the tengu's sphere. Physical gifts, these had no appeal to Rilvere. In the depths of the tengu's magic trinket, though, what Rilvere saw was not gold and treasure and gems and palaces. What he saw was his own reflection, dripping in rich black fantasy and glittering with bloodred diamonds. His body was the night, and his wings the sun cresting over the Wyrmwound spires, challenging the Lightweaver's power and glory. This Rilvere desired greatly, but was loath to admit that his own scales, though shimmering and glittering, were too dreary and worn for his imperious tastes. He screamed, yet his roars seemed unable to drown out the tengu's victorious cackling. It knew, it knew he was captured. "You like what you see, eh?" it crooned in his ear, giggling with mirth at its own trickery. "You like it, yes?" Rilvere roared again, desperate, but admitted he was slave to the tengu's whims. Through gritted teeth, he demanded to know what the tengu sought in exchange for those lustrous scales he saw. It grinned. "Just my name. All you must do is say my name, Rilvere, and it is yours."
