The day she fell was scarred in her memory. The ghost of their screams, the scrape of claws and the burning of flames.

When the sun rose on the ashes, the dawn of a new era, she waited and watched.

She watched as the world was paved anew, as dragons came and left, as structures grew and died. They called her a curious thing, a stranger, a curse, a blight on their utopia.

Still she stood. And when Time came, as it always did, and their words were washed away with the tide of change, she waited and watched.

She waited as summers turned to winters turned to years and decades and more, as her name was lost to the winds, and dragons turned to her more with questioning eyes and furrowed brows than scorn and derision.

“Do you still hear their screams?” her companion asked her one night, and she paused, tilted her head, and shrugged.

“Perhaps,” she said, a twist of her lips, a mockery of a smile. “Do you?”

“Always.”

His gaze dropped from hers, regretful or ashamed, and hurried to appear busy. The glow of the campfire glittered on his scales, the stars bright overhead.

The day she fell was scarred in her memories. And while even time could chase away the sting of betrayal or the heat of vengeance, some things could never leave her.

If she tried, she could still hear the ghosts of their screams, crying and begging and pleading turning to shrills and shrieking and then…

She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and let the autumn scents wash over her.

“Often,” she murmured, “silence is all the more bitter.”

Kumatora and Shade are two sides of the same coin. Shade brought about the end of Kumatora's reign as a princess, and Kumatora remains as a reminder to Shade of what he did. While Shade is off building his utopia, Kumatora is left wandering the streets. The townspeople look down on her. Propaganda against the Old Kingdom leading them to see her a lesser or inferior. But as time passes and the propaganda putters out, people stop recognizing her for the princess of the Old Kingdom, and more as just another person. She's hateful and vengeful against what Shade has done, but seasons keep passing and nothing happens, and Kumatora stops trying. She never stops caring because she can't, but she's indifferent. When Shade decides to leave, Kumatora comes with. She still hates him, will never forgive him, but revenge got her nowhere. Bitterness is all she has left.
