Herpe
Patient Zero

Slinky found his egg while digging in the plague-lands. Galagar had wanted to sell it, but Slinky appealed to Irda's altruistic nature by preemptively hatching the egg, and showing her the great red-eyed lump he claimed was his adoptive son. Of course, there was nothing particularly altruistic about Slinky's motives- he just knew that Galagar would be thoroughly irritated by taking yet another red-eyed dragon into the fold. Citing cultural heratage, he gave the child a 'traditional' name (Though really, it was just a way to ensure that Herpe's ancestry could not be ignored.). Galagar and Slinky are the only ones who call him by his given name- everyone else in the clan has given him some form of nickname- Peasy, Posey, Hepsee (from the hatchlings not yet used to their own tongues), or even just 'Hey You'. He answers to all of them.

He's not the brightest dragon in the lair. He came into the world confused and nervous and nothing has changed since. Slinky, his concern for the guardian's well-being little more than a farce, has taken to using Herpe as something of a guinea pig. New virus strains,
new cures, occasionally just something to sate the spiral's curiosity and boredom, Herpe is known for being sickly- remarkable, for a plague dragon. He is scarred, battered, and the skin atop his face has been peeled back and healed over (Though that was an 'honest accident'. Slinky had been certain he'd be able to put it back.). His eyes are no longer red, sparing him from further discrimination. Instead they've taken on a milky, off-green hue that indicates his failing vision.

Perhaps the only reason this has been allowed to go on so long is the fact that Herpe never complains. Coughing up blood or losing hair from his scraggly beard, Herpe insists he's happy. He loves his 'father'. In fact, he's fairly certain Slinky is his Charge, and is just happy to be useful.
