MommyFortuna

Mommy Fortuna is an old hag who used illusions to deceive people into seeing the ordinary animals held captive in her Midnight Carnival as mythical creatures. But by sheer luck, she happened to capture a real Harpy and the Unicorn who is later transformed into the Lady Amalthea. The Unicorn is freed by Schmendrick, who has been traveling with the carnival. Out of compassion, she refuses to leave without freeing the other animals, including the murderous Harpy. There is a tense moment when the Harpy makes it clear that if it saw the Unicorn again it would kill her, but its real target is Mommy Fortuna, who embraces her death with almost nihilistic glee.
