"SHADOW FLIGHT 4 LYFE"
Numeyu
{Self-proclaimed mage}

Somewhere deep in the lair, where the lava flows begin to slow, and the sunlight seldom reaches, lies a stout snapper and (rather incompetent) mage in training named Numeyu.

Hey! I’m not incompetent! That’s only what Loki thinks. And okay, he’s right about things, say, 99% of the time. But not this time. I swear. Look, I’m a great mage. Check out this new spell I learned yesterday! It can make things levitate.

Numeyu closes her eyes, and takes a deep breath. There is no levitating. Instead, there is a large boom. At the other end of the cavern, a rock explodes.

Oops. It was supposed to levitate. I promise. Just a little hitch, you see I think I have the hiccups… Do you want me to show you again? No? Are you sure? Are you sure you’re sure? Are you sure you’re sure you’re—

Well, fine. I guess you’ll never glimpse my great magical talent, then. You’re really missing out.

I try to make Loki teach me a new spell every day. He gets really annoyed, but that only makes it even more fun, because every day you need to find a new way to make him listen to you. The other day, I set a cloud of mosquitoes on him. They wouldn’t stop buzzing and biting him until he agreed to teach me another magic spell, and afterwards, he was covered in angry red bug bites for what seemed like hours. He actually still has one really bad one on his right hind leg. I like to poke it, just to irritate him. I don’t even know how he stood all those bugs for a whole hour, but he eventually caved in, just like I expected, and agreed to teach me the levitating spell that I did earlier. What? No, the spell did not make the rock explode. It made the rock levitate. Whoa, who are you calling me a liar? Now, just because I’m a Shadow dragon doesn’t mean that—

Okay. Fine. So I like to play pranks. So does Loki, though, and he still hates me. He never teaches me magic, even though I’m his apprentice. It’s probably because dragons who aren’t from the Tangled Wood like to think that we Shadowlings are all super shady, and liars, and shouldn’t be trusted. And, I mean, I happen to love playing pranks, but it’s an undeserved reputation, really.

The one spell I can say with confidence that I’ve truly mastered is the spell that projects a little Shadow rune above my head at all times. There it is, the symbol of my home, and the best place in Sornieth, in my (totally unbiased) opinion. I don’t really remember it—Loki and the clan took me in when I was a little baby, but it’s still my home just as much as here. I do that spell every day, just to show everyone how proud I am of where I come from. We’re not a bunch of thieves who can’t be trusted. Nah, we Shadow dragons just know how to have fun the right way, and that sometimes means that other dragons get annoyed at you. But what’s the harm, really, if the end result is that dragons think it’s funny? If the end result is worth it, then the whole thing is worth it, really.

That’s why I love the Shadowbinder and her realm. No one knows how to enjoy life like a Shadow dragon. Everyone else is so concerned about what others think of them. Us? We don’t care. We stand by the dragons who stand by us, and those who don’t? Oh, well. We’ll just set a cloud of mosquitoes on them, so they know just what we think.
