Biography
Aural/clan leader the abandoned prince Of or relating to ears; if asked he will say it means his other senses are strong where his sight has failed him |
Somewhat smaller wings for his length, but mostly average
One of 28 dragons with his colors, one of 7 not exalted, of 5 in active lairs
Everything about him is pale and filled with a quiet grace. A slim, fine-boned body marks his regal blood and his crests seem to perpetually stand high in dominance. His eyes are so cloudy with cataracts that he occasionally gets him mistaken for an ice dragon, but on closer inspection one can tell that the green isn't all gone, and they glow dimly with power in the dark.
-many clan members speak of him with great reverence
-makes it his personal duty to meet and welcome every dragon to clan, protective instinct strong even towards dragons technically older than himself
-unfailing judge of character, and as such more lenient towards criminals in understanding their intents- cannot, however, stand dragons that kill for their own benefit, such as bounty hunters, and has adopted some dragons in part to spite dragons that dare hunt down an outlaw on his territory
-doesn’t tolerate long-standing rivalries within clan
History: Aural was born to the alphas of a mirror pack- old, regal blood that had dominated their pack for generations so that they were effectively royalty. He was expected to follow his parents footsteps, to grow up strong and fast and worthy of a leader’s place, but these dreams died when his eyes began to cloud over. The pup missed details when he was instructed, and flagged behind other younglings. He failed to respond to visual assertions of dominance, and before long proved easy for other pups to push around. Such an embarrassment, to have a child that could neither hunt nor defend himself. As the pup grew closer to complete blindness he fell back further until the pack had left him behind. Not even his parents thought to go back and search for him.
No one is entirely sure what happened next. Aural claims the Windsinger simply wasn't done with him yet. Cataracts had spread into all four of his eyes until the pup could barely differentiate between more than dark or light, hot or cold. His sharp eyes and swift feet- a mirror’s normal hunting tools- had failed him. And yet he did not perish on his own.
Years later he could be found racing across the plains by foot or by wing, as quick and sure-footed as any of his forefathers. Aural lived alone, and but not because he did not know other dragons who would welcome him. He liked the freedom to travel, and the quiet to meditate and pray to his Windpapa in peace. Clansdragons were kind, but there was conflict within them as well, where flight or breed rivalries divided them.
Aural's life changed the day one particular dragoness winessed him hunting.Rhea was awestruck by the blind dragon from their first encounter, and Aural was intrigued by the fae that seemed to have much more going on in her head than she let on. They met again and again, accidentally at first, and then intentionally as they began to grow fond of each other. Both found in the other a kindred spirit, someone they could confide in when they had spent most of their lives closed off to other dragons. Aural could tell that she was terribly unhappy to leave each time they parted, and so encouraged her to stop returning home and join him instead in a life that clearly suited her better.
Rhea had barely begun her new life at his side when the pair started to accumulate hatchlings. It was never because they intended to start adopting dragonets- they’d find a little one alone one day with no parents to be found, or a desperate traveller would beg the seemingly responsible family to take in a hatchling they couldn’t care for, unaware that they were themselves new to parenting. However they came by them, Aural and Rhea were soon swamped by hatchlings and a budding clan they didn’t know they were founding.
Magic- Aural’s magic reserves are far stronger and far deeper than would be expected of a mirror. From infancy he could be found blowing feathers and scraps of debris around and above his head, mere games to amuse him. As this affinity developed with age it grew stronger, until his connection to the winds made up for, if not exceeded, the use of his eyes. He can sense wind currents around him and how they bend around objects, allowing him to "see" objects that would normally be outside his field of view.
-virtually impossible to sneak up on
-in flight can conjure winds strong enough to knock other dragon from the sky, or break bones when closer to the ground
- can navigate tight spaces at high speeds
