옛날, 아주 먼 옛날
기사를 사랑했던 시녀가 있었습니다.
시녀는 기사를 위해서 먼발치에서 바라보기만 했습니다.

어느 날 시녀가 모시는 공주가 말했습니다.
"이제, 이 인형은 질렸어! 너에게 줄게!"
공주가 준 것은 작은 태엽 인형 속에 갇힌 기사였습니다.

태엽은 이미 녹슬어 있었습니다.
시녀는 녹슨 태엽을 감기 위해, 자신이 가진 모든 것을 바쳤습니다.
탐스러웠던 머리카락, 부드러웠던 갈기.
자신을 내어 바꾼 향유를 정성스럽게 바르자 기사의 태엽이 움직였습니다.

시녀는 마지막으로 자신의 생명을 대가로
기사를 되돌려 놓았습니다.

숨결이 훅 불자, 시녀는 웃었습니다.
나직한 미소를 지으며 초라한 기사의 몸을 날개로 덮었습니다.

"안녕하세요."

시녀가 세상에서 한 마지막 유언은, 산들바람을 타고 살포시 내려앉았습니다.
