Kiara
Astronomer / Fighter Mated to Merchant You spy this dragon sitting at the edges of the clan's territory, she carefully scribbles on some parchment before peering into the night sky. She was born under a new moon. That, the elders said, was their first mistake. "How will you ever keep her from wandering?" they asked, when presented with the tired new parents' complaints, "if you could not even plan her birth correctly? She is lost now. She'll always be lost." Her parents understandably did not accept this truth and tried everything they could to keep their precious baby girl from drifting away. It was difficult- she was tiny, and easily distracted, and quiet, so quiet that it was almost too easy to lose track of her for a time. She wouldn't call for help either if she ever fell over or tripped, just lay there and stared up at the sky. This brought problems later on, as her eyes became weak from gazing at the sun, and her mind somewhat scattered from the constant stargazing. She got dizzy sometimes looking back at the ground, and would occasionally look around her in surprise, as what she saw did not look like what she remembered. She was bullied when she was finally allowed to see other hatchlings. Her parents longed to intervene, to protect her, but the elders forbade it. "She needs this challenge," they told them as they fretted. "She has to be brought back to reality." The constant teasing and shoving and laughing did eventually bring her back into herself- but only a little. She got exceptionally good at knocking down the ones who mouthed off the most, and as she grew older, she was able to tumble the strongest hatchlings in her birth year, even those much larger than herself. This gave her more time to foster her own interests, and when she was permitted to join the other hatchlings in school, she faced the opportunity with delight. The walk to and from the school clearing gave her ample time to explore, both the road and the clan's territory but also the woods surrounding it- how wonderfully deep and dark they were! She could lose herself inside for hours. One time she lost herself for good. She came out the other side believing herself to be home, but she wasn't even close. Confused, crying, she stumbled into a group of elderly dragons sunning themselves on stones, surrounded by papers and paintbrushes. They calmed her down and brought her back to their clan. The clan was skeptical about taking her in at first, but when she wasn't able to describe what her home clan even looked like, they finally gave in. The elderly dragons took her as their own and fostered her in their grove- a beautiful garden they'd grown from seeds and tended to grow into a massive cave of leaves. They had stuck a huge telescope through the top, and as Kiara grew older, they taught her how to use it. They taught her how to use the stars to find her way, a necessary talent due to her excessive wandering. They taught her how to identify constellations and galaxies and meteors, shooting stars and asteroids. And when they died, the doddering, lovely old fools, she took their place as the clan's astronomer. Her marriage to Merchant, the clan's ambassador to Nature clans around Sornieth, wasn't based purely, or even at all, on love or affection. They bore a healthy respect for each other and appreciated each other's work, and eventually it was decided that a match would tie their two careers so closely together that both of them would benefit. It could be said that they do love one another, or you might suspect it seeing him brush the excess powder off her wings when she's cleaning her telescope, his touch lingering a bit too long, but the answer can't be said for sure. Therefore it came as a big surprise when, on New Year's Day of the year following their match, Merchant came home from another clan carrying a new hatchling- orphaned and full of childish, beautiful joy. The hatchling already had a familiar, a bewitched wooden toy that flapped its wings all on its own and clacked its teeth like it was talking. The hatchling brought smiles and laughter to the home of Kiara and Merchant and he showed a fascination from an early age with the stars his mother loved and the flowers his father coveted. Their family was a small one, an odd one, but it wasn't a bad one. Kiara did not miss her old family, her parents, though she thought of them often, and her new life was something strange and wonderful. She was free where she lived now, free to do what she pleased and what she liked, and that was worth more to her than anything. Lore written by SkyTreader197 |
