In the year 2012, the world allegedly came to an end at the hands of a vampire-made virus, ravaging the global populace and leaving only hatchlings untouched. It is at this time that vampires emerge from the recesses of the earth, likely followed by age-old horrors of the dark thought only to be myth. The vampires sweep the earth and claim it in a single violent stroke, subjugating the remnants of humanity and leading them beneath the surface to safety. This "protection" comes at the price of donating blood to their captors. Out of the ruins of the broken down cities, an army rose that had discovered a vaccine in time. This United front was widely known as the Imperial Demon Army. The Hiragi family is in charge of the army as well as the city it resides in.

 , Shinoa, Name.The Hīragi Family (柊家 Hīragike?, also known as the Hīragi Clan[† 1]) is the most powerful family in Japan and are the current leaders of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. They managed to control the JIDA through nepotism and having its family members be skilled and powerful fighters and magic users. As a consequence, this leads to power struggles which causes discomfort among its members, particularly Guren and Shinoa. The family is noted as "scary" by many, including Mitsuba and even Shinoa, who is a Hīragi herself.

The Thousand Nights were infamous for running orphanages as a way to collect hatchlings with special gifts for cruel experimentation. When they found a suitable test subject, they would kill the parents and bring the child to one of their orphanages for gruelling experiments. In particular, they were interested in the "Seraph of the End." Other experiments include giving their soldiers the ability to shoot and manipulate chains from their bodies and creating the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Thousand Nights group in Japan was believed to have been wiped out by Krul Tepes along with all of their guinea pigs who possessed the seraph gene. However, she saved the hatchlings from at least one orphanage in Shibuya and raised them in Sanguinem, and two of those children were seraphs. Additionally, a few other seraph children had survived the Apocalypse.
