The Breathing Lair
This lair was sculpted on an ocean cliffside by centuries of storms and waves. It's size was great enough for the largest of Ridgebacks to stretch his wings freely.
The dedicated dragons who call this lair home share it, keeping to the nest, defending the territory from beasts, taking turns on hunting expeditions and more.
Pavla, the lair founder, takes you through a tour of the cavern. [scroll]
As your sea-sprayed form graces the entrance, you're greeted by three Ridgeback-high walls. You gape at how tall the entrance is, and the sapphire statue of The Arcanist that spreads it's wings across the entrance.
You have to duck to pass The Arcanist's grace, but once you get inside you see the business of the lair. To your left you see nests lined across the ceiling, being kept to by Imperial Females, their bodies wrapped around the nest with their wings draping from the ledge in the wall peacefully. The lair extends deep enough into the mountainside that you can't see past a certain point, but you are ushered toward the feeding section.
Here, one Pearlcatcher is handing food out to needy hatchlings and, the more patient, dragons. His Pearl is protectively kept in his tail as the orders are passed out. At his side, two forest spirits; a fox and a badger, help him hand out goods. You let out a small breath as the smell of raw fish, blood-soaked hide, soil-scented grub and rich plant touch your tongue. Your mouth waters slightly but you are taken from your daydream as the Pearlcatcher shouts to someone you can't spot to get more meat from the forest.
Pavla's wing guides you to the heart of the lair, several paces past the food stand. Here, dozens of lights and gems are strung from the ceiling, where one more (smaller) statue of The Arcanist stands. She stands with her wings outstretched as well as her arms. Here was where the most dragons stayed. The chatter echoed off the torch-lit walls and sounds of the ocean seemed far behind. As you watch the crowd, you notice several dens shaped into the walls with personal items like hoard, posters, and familiars poking from the entrances. A dragon zips by you with another, the two nuzzling each other and crawling into the den in the wall. Smaller nests within the lair were carved out for individual living, you realize.
Sitting and watching the community, you notice a waterfall past the crowd. There, couples of dragons were drinking from the fresh water and, some even took a dip in the pond. It was no larger than a dragon, so they took turns soaking. One large fire-lit glass candle was in a cozy hole behind the mini waterfall, illuminating the pond. As you look past the form in the water, you notice little glimmering biofluorescent plants on the clay floor. Your guide pokes you with his wing and you turn toward him.
As Pavla closes his tour, several battle-ready dragons speed through the lair, earning chants and roars. As you look closer, you realize that Arcane emblem was painted and tattooed across their bodies, along with sharpened talons and the occasional flag wrapped around a tail. They were to fight along their Clanmates under The Arcanist's glory in the Dominance.
As the sun set behind the ocean and cast orange light into the lair, Pavla sends you with a parting gift and thanks you for the visit. You look into your hands and see that the gift is a small seaslug, decorated with the gorgeous colors of the coral-sprung ocean.
