The beginning:

So many see the storm as something to be feared. We do not, for the storm protects those who find solace in the flashes of lightning and the rumbles of thunder. That is how we came to be. Cythymau, a beautiful blue guardian, was the first. She took two lost hatchlings under her wing, a pearlcatcher and a fae. These two grew to be strong in their own right – Lannister as the clan leader, and Ramone as a matriarch. Cythymau and Sif, a golden pearlcatcher, eventually also became matriarchs. Together they provided a sturdy foundation for a clan to grow and prosper.

In the beginning, we were seen as a sort of safe haven. Dragons in trouble would come to us for shelter and a place to hide from their troubles. Scarred by the claws of despair, fear, and betrayal, they fled to us in the hopes that they could begin their lives anew. As our size and reputation grew, others would come to us, having heard of our standards of fairness and equality. Alas, our own guards were not enough to keep us fully protected; thus, we found it necessary to ally ourselves with a clan of thieves and murderers. It was not an easy decision, but it had to be done. In exchange for rare and valuable items, they provide us with extra protection. It is a small price to pay for our safety.

Our lair lies in the Shifting Expanse. It is a desert where only the strongest can survive, and therefore we must take various measures to ensure our safety. The border is guarded by an electric barrier; it sparks and sizzles with the power of the storm. The inner territories are filled with a variety of structures, each a wonder to behold. Not all have a purpose – yet anyway. In the true spirit of lightning, we are always looking towards progress.

Our society may seem rather odd to those not accustomed to it. Because parents have their own unique responsibilities, they do not care for their own hatchlings. The young ones are raised by caregivers specifically trained for that purpose. There is no currency, for we have no need of it. We are a communal society where everyone must pull their own weight for the sake of the clan as a whole. If one does not contribute, they are cast out. As harsh as that may seem, we cannot support dead weight. Survival is too difficult for that. Our ambassadors seek out other clans, for it is vital that we obtain strong allies in this troubled world. Together, we exist as an efficient unit. We are sparks of lightning. Alone we are not powerful, but together we create a mighty storm.
