In the North Sea of a Thousand Currents - off the Scarred Wasteland and Tangled Wood coast - a loose group of craggy, piercing islands tower over the sea above the Leviathan Trench. Within one of these barren pillars resides the busy Letheton (let-heh-ton) clan.

LETHETON

The Letheton clan is structured around loyal stewardship of the rivers that sustain Sornieth. They believe not only in the practical importance of rivers, but spiritual as well. They represent the far-reaching influence and necessity of the Tidelord.
The clan is always busy, being divided in charges, monitoring rivers across each Flight region. An important part of this task involves the discreet maintenance of shrines for a river's spiritual sustenance. These shrines are almost always hidden or disguised from beastclan or native flight residents, and only a few ancient, powerful rivers receive blessings from larger, private temples.
Care of these shrines are necessary for geographic scrying, performing rites, invocations, granting and storing charms, and delivering sacrifices.
Letheton dragons spend a lot of time travelling between the trench lair and the river or rivers they're charged to protect. Their jobs require a complex variety of skills to ensure their work goes smoothly and hopefully unheeded (depending on the river location or flight). However, while some dragons may favour stealth to complete their tasks, others may pursue maintaining social or trade relationships for easier travel or even for open maintenance of their shrines. Other dragons may take advantage of their birth flight eye colour to manipulate flight residents.
Despite the spiritual importance of rivers, water, and Tidelord, and the level of worship Letheton engages in, the nature of their work requires a critical understanding of how the gods and elements influence and operate with each other. Without the participation of dragons from other flights, the work Letheton devotes itself to would be impossible to sustain.

HISTORY

Letheton was once a large, multi-clan force with a sizeable military reserve and imperial family line who operated openly across Sornieth and commanding great influence and respect within the Sea of a Thousand Currents. In many of the regions they operated, shrines and temples were tended openly and often saw worship from other flights. Trade relations were wide reaching and well maintained, and while scrying was naturally a completely private practise, Letheton dragons were regularly employed out-of-clan in advisement roles in the hopes they may slip in some predictions.
Of what little literature on the golden age of Letheton remains, these basics make up the majority. But in the most well preserved, ancient temple library ruins, a few archives detail the complete fracture and disintegration of Letheton to be nearly completely forgotten under the Sea.
Letheton's downfall is recorded chillingly from both sides of the political and religious fracture; on one side, scrolls and tablets gushing uncritical, singular worship and suprematism of Water and Tidelord, evolving into spiritual leaders directing the worship and overzealous sacrifice and charms to their own hoards. Shrines were either abandoned if they were seen to serve no use, or otherwise adopted practices of shrine maintenance, scrying abuses and dark magic that commanded water-suprematism abroad. In most cases, this resulted in negative consequences in the surrounding region taking the form of natural disasters.
On the other side, there are few preserved scrolls presenting a critical view of these developments as well as the future of Letheton. These articles were found on scrolls, easier to produce and disseminate; however, their numbers grew thinner as the clan's problems worsened and clan numbers dwindled.
Eventually archives display two major disasters in Letheton's past favoured regions, the Windswept Plateau and Shifting Expanse. Some of the archives mourn the loss of life, destruction, and predict devastating consequence from angry clans - Water, Lightning, and Wind - other records detail morbid pleasure and righteousness, and the successful dark shrine rites that led to the events.
As predicted, skirmishes rendered temples and shrines mere piles of ruin. Few of the clan desired to stay and defend their work, property, kin or apathetic emperor. The imperial line was divided between those slain and those shamed and driven out of Spiral Keep, practicing classical Letheton rites in secrecy. What was left of Letheton's population after the pathetic battles and surrender lived short, magic-less lives without the healthy knowledge and practice of river and water stewardship.

Neglected generations later, completely forgotten across the Sea, the history and practices of Letheton was revived by its curious and singular sucessor, Evla. Exploring hidden, ancient temples and archives across the Sea and Sornieth, she has committed her clan to the classical rites and worship of Letheton and to the destruction of the remaining malicious shrines that fouls Sornieth's rivers and all around them.

COLONY

The Letheton clan keeps colony in one the towering volcanic columns that rises out of the northern end of the Leviathan Trench. Throughout the length of this column run wide, winding passages artfully shaped by digging dragons and relentless pounding currents directed by skilled water mages. Various chambers and air pockets line the paths from sea's surface to the depths of the trench.
Near the surface, the paths are narrow, guarded entrances preceding barracks chambers for on-duty dragons. Further below, the paths give way to large chambers where families keep nest and hoard. As the column widens nearer to the bottom, chambers open up and offer more communal spaces, such as areas for training and education, research, offices, market, medical assistance, and a multi-chamber library as well as large forum.
Below the lower library and treasure hoard is the largest chamber, with multiple structural columns, supporting the garden, temple, and seat of governance. Flora and fauna is stocked by the working dragons, bringing favoured plants, artefacts and familiars from every region to populate the garden that operates as a deeply treasured recreation and therapy space by all in the clan. Multiple dragons tend the garden full-time, as care of the garden is as important as maintaining the rivers and shrines throughout Sornieth.
The temple is the next most important communal space, housing scrying posts for predicting futures as well as teaching divination to younger generations, and a separate library dedicated to the religious history of Sornieth. Here, dragons maintain and worship at shrines dedicated to each of the Gods, as well as observe regular worship designed around the relationships between the Gods, regions and elements. Although the spirituality of each dragon may vary greatly, the institution is maintained full-time by many dragons and it's importance at least in scrying supported by all.

SOCIAL

Romantic, sexual, and familial relationships are structured in units of four (generally). Adults court, love, nest and care for hatchlings in these larger polyamorous groups. These larger families help to alleviate the stress and loneliness that may be experienced due to the nature of Letheton work and lifestyle. Beyond this social structure, no concern to gender or sexuality exists in personal identity.
Despite parents being heavily involved in work, having 3-4 parents ensures consistent attention. During adolescence, they are further cared for through education. Adolescent dragons are taken beyond the Sea of a Thousand Currents at an early age, to the ancient, hidden Letheton temples in the Tangled Wood, Sunbeam Ruins and Viridian Labyrinth for an introduction to clan practice and history. This education places importance on stealth, avoiding specific actions and mistakes in Letheton history, spreadng awareness of the clan cause and importance of river work, and instill a lasting reverence for rivers, water and Tidelord no matter where the students end up later in life.
Later on in adolescence, service and education in at least two streams is required. Dragons can choose to pursue this apprenticeship in medicine, martial skills, gathering, scrying, archaeology, law, mercantile skills, crafting, magic and charms, alchemy, history, artistry, literature and archival skills, garden keeping, accounting, science, and temple service.
