Old King Dorian saw the horrors in the Fortress of the End. He was there when it was breached and saw the devastation that could happen when such forces were left unchecked. With the Icewarden's blessing, he left to begin slaying those that threatened Sornieth. None of those who join the Griswold are normal. Dorian only keeps strange company. But they are a family, and know that each time they go out to hunt, they may not return. It is the sacrifice they decided to make.
