Prologue________

Location: New Avengers Facility. 1 month after the Battle of Sokovia.

It had been a long day for Tony Stark.

Today was the grand opening day of the New Avengers Facility, filled with moving crews, nosy press and news anchors, and equally nosy SHIELD personnel that had seemingly flooded into the building in an endless tide. How many had the contract agreed to enlist, again?

At the moment, as the day was finally nearing to a close, Tony currently had a massive headache going on behind his eyes. One more camera flash would probably send him running for the nearest empty room for a moment's peace and quiet. He probably used to have more stamina for situations like these in his younger days, he realized, but now all Tony wanted was a vacation.

Hell, he deserved it.

"Hey, there you are. The Director wanted me to give this to you." The face of Pepper Potts emerged from the shifting, slowly thinning crowd- a welcome sight at the end of the long day. His brow furrowed, however, when she handed to him a bound-manila folder. The SHIELD insignia was imprinted at its front. Obviously confidential material.

"Oh come on Pep, you know I don't like being handed things," he tried to press the folder back into her hands, "This can wait 'til tomorrow." The woman pushed it back at him, giving him a look.

"This can't wait, Tony. Everyone else on the team has already made their votes. They're just waiting on you now for the final count."

"Waiting on what?" Tony flipped open the first page of the folder, answering his own question as he stared down at the title of the file: New Avengers Initiative- Candidate Files. "Oh."

Pepper began to walk, Tony in tow, as they navigated the crowd. "SHIELD just wants your input on the candidates, they've already been pre-screened and evaluated by-"

"For Christ's sake," Tony cut in, rapidly flipping through the pages, "These are all kids. They're gonna be training here? I just paid for all this new furniture."

"They're all legal adults, Tony."

"Yeah but, look at this," he flipped to a page that showed a young, brown-haired girl, " 'can transform into any known animal at will'? It'll literally be a bull in a china shop. Or this kid,....'able to spread disease on contact'. Oh my god."

Pepper blew an exasperated sigh from her lips, stopping and turning to Tony, "Just mark down the three you like the most." At Tony's look, she added, "Or dislike the least."

"Fine, fine. Give me a sec." Tony frowned down at the files for a moment, riffling between the pages, then jotted his choices on the side of the folder.

With a click of the pen, the decisions were set. When all the votes were tallied in from the Avengers and passed by SHIELD, three candidates were chosen for acceptance into the New Avengers program:

Janine Chen- alias: "Seraph"
Moisés "Kingsly" Coulais- alias: "Eldritch"
Li Ming Tashi- alias: "Switch"

To these three promising young adults, envelopes were sent out that contained the terms of their acceptance, a time and date, plane tickets, and- perhaps- a new future that could define the rest of their lives.

Location: Bordeaux, France | A few minutes after Midnight
A hand, pale and roughed, grasped tightly onto a sleek envelope as it’s owner rushed through the city streets of nighttime Bordeaux, a wild grin set on his face. He was jumping as he ran, veering around walking couples and families, giving a whoop! as he passed. A few people stared or chuckled, and one even raised a hand, giving him a high-five without even knowing why the man was so excited.

His heart was rushing, pumping blood to every fiber of his being as he held onto that letter. He had been chosen! HIM! Of all people! He had tried so hard, helping people, doing good for the lack of heroes here in France, and it had paid off! The Avengers had seen him!

He avoided a couple window shopping, the display lights shining on his jubilant face and his darker clothing. His breath was heavy as he finally came to a slow a few streets over, slipping into an alley between two apartment complexes. He went up to the side door of one, knocking on it, and taking a moment to catch the air he had lost. His lungs felt like they were burning, and he could only smile more in excitement.

The noise of the city had died down as the door opened, an elderly woman lifting her wrinkled face to see who had knocked. She suddenly smiled, seeing him, raising her arms in greetings.
”Bonsoir, Moisés! Quoi de neuf?”(Good evening, Moisés! What’s new?) She spoke, taking in his elated expression and body movement.

”Je l'ai fait, Mlle Laufyette, je l'ai fait! Je suis entré dans les Avengers!” (I did it, Miss Laufyette, I did it! I got into the Avengers!) he told her, taking her up in her hug, holding her tight. The older woman gasped and laughed, patting his back with a strong hand before she pulled away, tucking some of her grey hair behind her ear.
”That is good! This is great! Come in, come in, you must pack! Take your things!” she continued in French, smiling and ushering him inside.

He ducked down in slight embarrassment, red dusting his cheeks as he entered the apartment complex. He looked around the backroom before she came over, leading him to the room she stayed in, on the ground floor. She was the landlady, after all.

Now, Moisés didn’t have much in terms of items, so his packing was light. A simple backpack with 3 changes of clothes, his set of pajamas, undergarments, his toiletries, sewing kit, and a thick quilt Miss Laufyette demanded he take. Pulling on the filled up backpack, he grasped a small plush, old and worn, designed to appear like a ferret-like rodent called a Beech marten, native to France. He tucked it into his pocket, it’s head poking out of the opening, as he turned and kissed the old woman’s forehead.

”I will never forget you, Miss Laufyette.”
She smiled at his words and pat his cheek, kissing it afterwards.
”And I will watch the news with bated breath for you! You have done so much for us, Moisés. None of those in France you saved will forget you.”

He smiled softly, giving her one last hug, before he left the apartment complex. He checked the envelope for his plane ticket, and set off to the airport. It’d be a long walk for him, but he’d make it in time; he prepared early just to do so.

A long walk, it sure was, but he was glad he had decided to pack up early and go. By now, he was waiting for the plane, holding his stuffed animal close. The poor thing was slowly falling apart, but he was determined to keep it in as well shape as he could, taking out his sewing kit to work on fixing one of the legs and a button eye.
He passed the time waiting, and then on the plane itself, repairing the small stuffed animal, before proceeding to just sleep the rest of the ride.

Hours later, they had finally landed in America, and Moisés grabbed his pack, rushing out to where he was told a car would be waiting for him. He immediately found the sleek vehicle, black with tinted windows and all, just like in those spy movies the British had. He greeted the driver before getting into the backseat, putting his backpack down beside him. He grinned as he stared out the window, taking in the sights as they headed for the facility.

Anxiety began to slowly gnaw at him now; here he was, in a different country across the sea, with powerful people he’s only watched off the television. He grew a little nervous, but excited, wondering what would be in store for him.

And at last, they reached it. The new Avengers Facility.

He grabbed his backpack, stepped out of the car, and looked up at the tall building. This… This was where his life would begin. A new start, and hopefully for a better future.

He couldn’t wait.

"And you'll be sure to tell me if the aliens are coming?"

"Yes, Zia Ricci. I will give you enough forewarning to get out."

The incredulous expression Tashi made was hidden from the old woman as she turned the lock to her door. This chapter of her life ended when she pulled the key from the door. For a moment, she hesitated. It wasn’t often that she committed so wholly to something; not renewing her rent, giving away her cat, it all pointed to a level of seriousness that scared Tashi, somewhere deep inside her, where she still admitted to those feelings. Not for the first time, she wondered if she should’ve kept her rent. It would give her an escape, and it would mean she had some place to return to, when if she washed out. It wasn’t too late; she had enough money to compensate her landlord for the problem. But beyond being sure that SHIELD would know what she was doing and shaft her for it… maybe, there was a part of her that wanted to be good at this. For her, for the first time since--

Tashi took a deep breath and slipped the key off her ring and dropped it into her pocket. She turned to face her neighbors; the closest, Mrs. Ricci, who was looking at her with barely disguised fear. To be fair to her, in the times they were living now, an alien invasion was a legitimate worry. Her son, Giovanni, was behind her giving Tashi an apologetic look; according to him, his mother had been worried about UFO’s and aliens since long before the appearance of superheroes and what they were fighting. Tashi couldn’t say they were her friends, despite the camaraderie between them--frankly, they were a bit too friendly with her for Tashi’s taste. But she had to give her cat to someone, and they were nice enough. They were home a lot, and Mrs. Ricci was lonely, and Prince Hairy didn’t like a lot of people around him. It was the best option. Besides, she might end up homeless and jobless after this, so it was really the best option.

”Are you alright, dear?” Tashi was snapped harshly back into the moment at the question, focusing in on Mrs. Ricci’s face, too close for comfort and contorted in concern. Tashi dodged out of the way of the well meaning hand, giving the older woman a hopefully comforting smile.

”Just thinking about how much I’m going to miss your pretty face.~” Tashi laughed as Mrs. Ricci immediately began berating her in Italian; far too fast for her to even guess at what she was saying, but she assumed the old lady was telling Tashi how ridiculous she was just by the tone. Tashi side stepped her and instead approached her son, and more importantly, the fat persian lounging in his arms.

”Goodbye, Prince Hairy. Be good, okay? Point out your hairballs, no hiding them in shoes in the middle of the night.” Tashi felt a pang of regret at his scrunched up face, meowing plaintively up at her. She cured herself by raining kisses down on his face, something he only tolerated for a couple seconds before he shoved his paw in her face. She laughed softly and peered up at Giovanni, sobering. They’d already said their goodbye’s; he’d invited himself over last night and they’d had a decent night binge watching movies and drinking cheap beer. It was nice for a change.

The thing was, Tashi hadn’t told them what this new job was, only that it had required on-site living quarters, so she had to move out. She didn’t want them worrying--furthermore, she didn’t think they really needed to know. It would be obvious if she made the team, anyway. And if she didn’t, she’d never see them again anyway. So a simple goodbye was the best she was going to get, and she was great.

After a few more words, Tashi threw her backpack over her shoulder, lifted her only other bag, and bid farewell. Now that they were out of sight, Tashi looked down at the envelope in her hands; her ticket to train with the Avengers. She felt a tightening in her throat. She was trying so hard not to be excited about it, because so many things could go wrong and--frankly, she wasn’t sure why she was chosen, out of all of them. She hadn’t exactly set herself up for greatness through the years. Maybe she was just the best of the bottom?

Tashi sneered at herself for the melancholy thoughts. When she was there, no matter what the endgame, she had to get ahold of those things. She couldn’t let on that she wasn’t sure of her footing. That was just straight up not cool. After a quick detour to her landlord’s office where she dropped off her key and the remaining money she owed, Tashi stepped out into the light, to the curb, where she was meant to wait for a black--

Town car. That was pulling up right in front of her. And then the suited dude got out and opened the door for her. Without taking off his sunglasses.

Tashi leveled him with an unimpressed look at the cliche. He, of course, showed no reaction.

”You realize this looks like you’re taking me somewhere to kill me and dispose of the body, right?” Tashi asked him, deadpan. Neither of them moved an inch, but the question got a placid smile from the man. Tashi spent another couple seconds sizing him up, and wondering if she still had time to go in and beg for her key back… but ultimately, got in the car. What would be worse; dying now, or washing out and becoming homeless later?

Tashi didn’t have an answer by the time the car rolled up to the Avengers facility, nor had her trepidation lowered any. But they were here. That counted for something, right? Tashi got out of the car and looked out at the buildings, sighing through her nose. She looked over at the stone-faced agent that was handing her her bag, and deadpanned; ”There’s still time to take me out, you know. I won’t even use my portals, I promise.”

All that got in response was another placid smile. She returned with one of her own; if that’s what she had to look forward to being surrounded by, they were going to rue the day they chose her for this team. She eyed the buildings, shoving all her trepidation into a box and shoving that box into a corner to rot. She was an ~*~ Avenger trainee now.

A voice, sounding too much like her father, piped up in the back of her head; Time to buck up, kiddo. It’s all or nothing now.

The city rumbled far beneath her feet as they dangled loosely over the ledge. Across her lap she hugged a duffel bag, while in both hands she gripped a single, pale envelope. Her eyes reflected the multitudes of lights below as they gazed out over the skyline, though they were lost in thought.

Three days ago, she had received the notice in her mail, addressed in a plain, unremarkable envelope to her name. Janine Chen. It had felt surreal, then, seeing it beside the SHIELD emblem, and it still felt surreal now.

Two years ago, she would not be sitting here, at the very top of the US Bank Tower, with only her wings to catch her if she slipped over the edge. Now Jay often came here to clear her mind after especially stressful days or nights, to leave her burdens behind in the city below for just a few moments.

Now or nothing.

The plane, according to the ticket enclosed in the envelope, was set to leave at 11:15 PM. To take her away to a different life that she did not know if she was ready for yet. She had already made all the necessary arrangements, told those who knew her about where she was going, terminated her lease, and called up her parents in Pennsylvania. Something to do with a "medical internship", she'd told them.

But for some reason, Jay couldn't bring herself to make that one, final leap. Here in LA, she'd been doing good; healing the sick in the hospitals and in the streets where she could find them-- or when they found her, calling her the "Ángel de Los Angeles". She wondered with a pang what would happen to those people if she left them. How many would wait for her? How many would die?

But then, Jay realized, she could also help so many more alongside the Avengers. She had seen firsthand the casualties and destruction they brought along with them during their battles, and only a month ago she had been in Sokovia to help with the injured.

With the Avengers, she could make a real difference. It was why she had been chosen after all, wasn't it?

Jay's fingers gripped the envelope tighter as she finally set her sights for the airport. It was really happening. She could do this. For her family, for all these people. Her wings unfurled from behind her with a soft snap, feathers uncurling and bones realigning, until they sat behind her like some great, dark bird. She pulled her mask over her face and readjusted the duffel bag across her side so that it fit securely over her shoulder, then tucked the envelope deep into her pocket.

Then, she jumped. Her stomach gave a familiar lurch as she dove downward for several dozen feet before banking upward and leveling herself off. The cool Californian night rushed past her face and her wings, carrying her along the path of the highway to the Los Angeles Airport.

Jay landed in an empty part of a parking complex beside the terminals, casting her gaze around before swapping her clothes for a pair of sweats. The next few hours went by in a blur as she passed through security, got her ticket scanned, boarded the plane, and arrived in New York at approximately 7:50 in the morning.

Still groggy from the trip (she never did like planes, nor red-eye flights), Jay wandered out the exit terminal. A car waiting for me, they'd said? She nearly missed the woman that approached her from the side, jarring her,

"Hello, you must be Miss Chen?" Jay turned to meet a brunette woman in a crisp business suit, giving a slow nod in response. But when she didn't make a move to follow, the other woman reached into her blazer and flashed a SHIELD badge. "This way, please."

They left the airport in a sleek Lincoln town car, complete with tinted glass windows and little cup holders with refreshments inside them. It was silent for most the drive there, the woman at the front not making any attempt to communicate with Jay- which was fine by her. Instead, she trained her eyes on the passing scenery outside the window, watching as the city flashed by and gave away to the more open land of upstate New York.

"Welcome to the New Avengers Facility." The woman announced as they crested the curve of a hill. The estate spread out before them, glimmering chrome in the morning light. It was even more stunning than what she'd seen in the photos, situated beside a lake in the distance and surrounded by trees. They passed several smaller facilities as they rolled down the road, across from what looked like a training field, as well as a large hangar with two gleaming jets parked outside. The car eventually slowed down to a stop beside the main building, a looming structure that overlooked the lake.

The woman rose out from the car, checking her watch, "There will be a short assembly at 1000 in the main hangar. I suggest you take this time to get settled in; someone inside will show you your room." Jay didn't get a chance to inquire about the topic of this "assembly" before the woman went back to the driver's seat and drove off, leaving her alone at the front of the building.

It was then that she remembered there were supposedly two other new...recruits as well, though that was all the letter disclosed. For all Jay knew, these people could be shape-shifters, or fire benders, or kung fu masters, or--

"Janine, what the hell did you get yourself into."

Moisés glanced around the facility area, having gone inside by now. He wasn't sure if he was the first or last to arrive, and scratched the back of his neck in thought.

He had been told of an assembly at 10, so checking the watch on his wrist- oh wait. He still hadn't changed it from French time, and frowned to himself. Now how would he know when to go?
Well, early bird gets the worm, as the Americans say he figures, walking towards where he hoped the assembly would take place.

It'd be rather embarrassing if he arrived late, or if he went to the completely wrong place. His fingers play with the Beech Marten in his pocket, fondly stroking the ferret-related creature's head to settle his nerves.

Could he find someone to ask? Yes, that'd be smart, wouldn't it be?
He walks off to find someone...

Tashi glanced down at her phone, again noting the time. When she'd first arrived and been shown to her room by a much (much, much) more talkative agent, she'd been informed that she'd been the first to arrive. Apparently, she was the only trainee coming in from New York. The other came from Los Angeles, and the other all the way from France. That was all the agent had said to her; Tashi had been afraid one question meant that she'd never get the agent to stop talking, so she hadn't asked, but she was curious about who else was meant to fill out the Avengers roster with her.

Tashi glanced up at the laptop on her bed, skimming the article about various " metahumans " in California and France, an idle curiosity she'd pulled up to pass the time until the assembly. It was 9:49, Tashi had walked around the place for hours until she'd retired to her room to mess around on her computer... As big as the desire to come in late just to lessen her time being there was, Tashi wanted to get this waiting over with. She wanted to be active, she wanted to be training; waiting around was hell.

Tashi sighed quietly and closed out of the tabs, shutting the computer down before sliding off the bed. She didn't bother to get dressed; graphic tee and sweatpants would have to do it for now. She made her way through the halls, leaving her room locked--she wasn't attached to anything in there yet, and she knew it would take a while for her to be really settled, so she wasn't prickling at the idea of someone going through her stuff. Yet. Tashi wandered, phone idly in hand, making her way slowly towards where the main hangar was.

Tashi really didn't mean to get distracted, but as she was meandering through the hall, someone else seemed to have the same idea; a blonde boy who pulled off the lost look really well. She eyed him for a moment, wondering if it was worth the trouble, before calling out; "Are you looking for the hangar too?"
