TOPIC | The Starwood Strand Bright Night
1 2
Once every so often, there is a night that is darker than any other, known as the Bright Night. To compensate for the darkness, the flowers that blossom on the Starwood trees glow extra bright. On this night, dragons travel from all over the world to witness this dazzling event and wander through the Star Wood almost in daylight. However, one should be cautious not to be lulled into a sense of security by this beauty, for there are dangers lurking in the Star Wood. Deep in the north of the Starwood Strand, near the creeping tendrils of the Wandering Contagion, resides a Talonok beastclan. There have been rumors of sightings of Corven tengu in the shifting darkness between the trees. Still, few dragons spend time peering into the distant, hazy shadows, their attention instead captured by the alluring brilliancy of the flowers blossoming on the treetops above. She could see the tip of the Observatory and the Focal Point silhouetted against the sunset. She was very excited to see the Starwood trees on the Bright Night. She had heard the Star Wood at night was always a beautiful and mesmerizing sight, but she had never seen the blossoms herself, as she had only ever visited the Starwood Strand during the day before. The Bright Night was said to be even more astounding than usual, so Myria had decided to make the journey tonight since the phenomenon would not occur again for quite some time. Most of the clan had decided to come witness the Bright Night too. While they only had a short distance to travel, Myria wished they had left a little earlier to be sure they didn't miss it. The flowers on the trees would blossom exactly at nightfall, and she wanted to be there to experience the transition. As Myria flitted briskly along, the icy water beneath her soon turned to solid pink earth. They arrived at the southern edge of the Star Wood, and in the dim light of dusk Myria could see dragons of all kinds scattered about the edge and inside the woods.

Dragons mingled between the trees, blind to each others’ presences, chattering quietly. This was a tourist area: some dragons had cultivated the flowers to grow around the trees in pleasing spirals, and glowing lanterns illuminated the path. Arcus trotted a wide path around, warm sand kicking up by their hooves. They were not the only familiar there, but they were perhaps the only Beastclan with a Spiral looped loosely around their shoulders, and from their experience that attracted... negative attention. Which was, perhaps, unfair to dragonkind as a whole, but Sandwyrm regarded her own kind with unsubtle terror. "The Callers gather in the clearings, when the flowers bloom at nightfall. They ritually call out for their kin, hoping that the Tengus call back." Arcus said. "They don't tolerate dragons, do they?" "No." Sandwyrm smiled weakly. "Don't be long." "You'll be fine." Arcus said, and smiled reassuringly. They brought up their arms to give the Spiral a hug, and their chin dropped between the draconic horns. After a while, Sandwyrm slithered out of their grasp to hover in the air, the cool fabric of her cape draped over Arcus's arm. "I'll be up in the trees." she said, and zipped off. Arcus watched her go, and made their way down the shore.

If anyone were to disturb the peace and beauty of this magical night, she would be upon them in an instant. She caught the sight of many other waiting dragons, as she warily stayed standing, whilst Mysidia, getting a little bored, decided to finish up his page of alchemical formulas on another page of his precious journal. "Green sludge... Yellow slime..." He muttered to himself, writing as he thought aloud. "Nonono, wait, that does not sound right..." He whispered to himself, completely immersed in his work. Sanctum, seeing no signs of trouble, snuggled up beside Mysidia, watching him work while half focused on the new book of birds she had recently acquired. After a long awkward silence, she spoke. "You don't suppose.. We came a little too early, do you?" She asked, glaring alertly at every dragon she saw, giving them a clear warning not to do anything suspicious. "I am aware we came a little ahead of everyone else within our clan, but I suspect this may have been too premature of an arrival." She murmured softly in the imperial's ear.

Faes were sensitive to the magic around them after all, and Aries had lived in the land of wind so long he'd almost forgotten the pleasure of being surrounded by his own element. Almost. He kept his distance from the center and main throng of dragons for now, wanting to avoid the distractions and chatter of larger dragons; the last thing he wanted was for foreign magic to disturb the specimens he had come for. Landing on a branch that swayed beneath him, the fae fanned his pale wings like so large a moth, calling on the breath within and around him. Swirling wisps of raw arcana sprouted from his forepaws, and he made as though to wind the glowing pink energy into an orb. His crest rose 'til they brushed his horns in a faeish grin, marveling at how easy it was to channel the spell with the air so saturated in his element. A number of the vials beneath his cloak began to glow with a matching light, reminding Aries that he had come to do more than play. He let the spell fade and took again to the air, drifting to the nearest cluster of tree's flowers. He nestled himself among them, pulling out a vial to gather the plant's pollen. The fae nuzzled one blossom affectionately before taking off to find more of the plants that grew or glimmered solely by night. Beyond the desire to grow the familiar plants back in his clan's lair, Aries was curious to see how the plants might change once the sun fell on the Bright Night. All life in the Starwood was affected by the Arcanist's magic, and he'd never had the time to study these plants when he was younger and on the run. The fae let out a monotonous sneeze, having fallen into one of the clusters after a clumsy landing. Tired as he was, Aries would undoubtably be covered in the flowers' various nectars before long, but the fae hardly minded.

"Beat you!" Dove said as she landed milliseconds before Oliver. Oliver just grinned back at her, the presence of all the other dragons silencing him. He had always been the shy type, only a few managing to ever get a word from him and Dove the only one currently living in the lair.

"Come on, over here! Remember what Prim Rose was going on about? Let's hurry before they're out!" Dove said as she grabbed Oliver's arm and ran. Prim Rose had actually gotten away from her star gazing long enough to help organize the snacks. There was a ton of dragons involved and so there was a ton of snacks but Dove seemed to think they'd be gone within the minute judging by how many she took.

Nom, Joshua, and Jonathan alighted on the ground not far off from Dove and Oliver. Nom felt a stab of worry: How could she explain meeting these two so early in the night? "Let's go over there. It will be easier saying I just met you later into the night." She said to Joshua as she walked towards the crowd opposite the snacks.

"Guys? Maybe this wasn't a good idea." Jonathan said as he waded through the crowd. He pulled his hood higher as he winced at the painfully bright skin of some of the dragons, feeling slightly sick. "Nonsense! You can't stay in that castle all the time, you know." Nom said to him. "It would certainly be more peaceful." Jonathan muttered but continued walking with them.

"Is that Nom? Those dragons she's with sure look like they want to be vampires or something. Hey, I wonder if they have a werewolf friend who'll bite me." Weston said somewhat jokingly. Roseline frowned at him and said "Really? You know how Nom is, she makes friends faster than she breathes." Reed gave a chuckle at her comparison and Weston gave the slightest hint of a smile. "Okay, okay. Can we go have some fun now?" Weston asked. Roseline nodded and led them to a patch of grass where they could land.

Roseline felt suddenly nervous with all the dragons around and hid behind Weston. "What now?" He asked her, not realizing how nervous she was. Reed's familiar suddenly jumped out of his bag and ran to the snack table. "Guess we're getting snacks." Reed said before running after his young familiar.

Shadowfighter saw Violetsting head farther into the forest to wait for when the trees bloomed. He wanted to go with her, but he didn't want to seem attached to her side all night. He had to keep his distance, for now. Just until the Bright Night started.

He tipped his snout to the setting sun. It won't be long now. He saw some dragons gathering around a table with snacks on top, so he headed over there, too. Suddenly, a nochnyr shot past him and got to the table first. There was a white, bandaged Tundra dragon running after him, too.

"I'm so sorry about him. He likes his snacks." The dragon apologized.

"It's alright, no damage done." Shadow responded. He turned to see that there was another Tundra, along with a Spiral back behind them.

"I'm Shadowfighter. Who are you?"

"My name's Reed. Nice to meet you, Shadowfighter." The Mirror felt pleased with himself, finally finding some dragons to talk to.

Dragons were continually flying in and landing near or in the woods. Myria glanced over at the horizon, where the sunset was fading rapidly into a more uniform darkness. Most of the dragons there seemed to be inside the woods already.
"I guess we should go in now, shouldn't we?" She mused to her clanmates and began flying cautiously towards the Star Wood. As they entered between the trees, Myria was surprised to find the Starwood trees produced a somewhat creepy atmosphere with their thin, pale trunks appearing ghostlike in the fading dusk light. But, the feeling began to diminish as they continued deeper into the woods and saw more dragons than any of them had ever seen in one place. The clan paused, unsure of where to go with so many dragons everywhere. Adina, the clan's only coatl, hummed something enthusiastically. Even when she wasn't speaking coatl, Myria found Adina almost as impossible to understand as Adina found her. Myria turned in hopes of being able to figure out what she meant.
"Adina wants to go get snacks." Translated her mate, Wavepool. A little ways away, in the direction he was looking towards, it seemed someone had set up a snack table.
"Oh," replied Myria, "ok." There didn't seem to be too many dragons there currently nor any sort of line or system. The clan headed over towards the table where a group of dragons was clustered.
