@Canisa The First Unicorn Once, not so long ago as we count time, when the Third Age was yet young, there lived a beautiful Unicorn. She was perfection personified, from her gleaming white coat, to her dazzling magical aura, to her gorgeous spiraling horn. When she ran, which she did often, her long mane and tail flew in the breeze, catching the sun’s rays and reflecting it back in a display of almost liquid light. Everywhere she went, she was greeted with respect and awe, and she never seemed to want for anything. When she was hungry, she had but to look at a juicy apple, and dozens of young beasts and dragons would scramble to fetch it for her. She never needed to worry about grooming, as there were always maren woman willing to comb out her mane and tail, and fauns and dryads would pick the burrs from her perfect coat. Even sleeping arrangements were never an issue, as every creature on land or sea would happily give up their sleeping area for her comfort. But though the Unicorn appeared to have everything she could ever want, she wasn’t happy. The one thing she yearned for most in all the world seemed to be completely out of her reach. For years the Unicorn moved in and out of the Dragon Clans and Beastclan Holdings, watching the families around her. A welcome, beloved guest…but only a guest. There was no other creature like her in all of Sornieth. The Unicorn had no family of her own. As time went on, the pain of this fact began to intrude on her pleasures more and more, until not a day went by that she didn’t find herself wishing for a mate and foal. At last, plagued by loneliness and a desperate need for a family of her own, she fled into the wilderness to get away from the happy families that surrounded her. But the Unicorn was not as alone as she thought. She had forgotten about all her friends and acquaintances among the beasts and dragons. None of the other creatures were happy to see the beautiful unicorn so miserable, and a delegation was sent to each of the dragon gods, pleading for an answer. All the Gods were moved by her plight, but none knew how to answer it. Dragon Gods made dragons, after all, not Unicorns. At last, the Arcanist, while perusing an ancient scroll, thought that he might have a partial solution, and sought out the Unicorn where she had hidden herself deep in the hostile wilderness. “You can have children,” He told her gently, “if you accept that their father will not be of your species. There is a spell that will make this possible, rather like the magic than enables different dragon races to reproduce. And there are many beings close to your kind that will be thrilled to become your mate. Be aware, however,” He added in caution, “that all things have a price, and this spell was meant for dragons, not a Unicorn. It will not be easy to change it. I will need to borrow your magic as well as using my own, and I do not know how long you will be able to reproduce before your energy will fade.” The Unicorn was stunned. She had never thought to ask one not of her own kind for a foal. But with the Arcanist’s magic, coupled with her own, such a thing might, in fact, be possible. She gladly accepted the offered gift, regardless of its price. The Arcanist sighed, and cast the spell, twisting the Unicorn’s magic and energy around her, changing her on a fundamental level. At the same time, however, He placed another magic upon her as well, in the hopes of mitigating the eventual price the beautiful creature would have to pay. The Unicorn thanked the Arcanist for His help, and ran joyfully from the wilderness back to her friends. As soon she let it be known she was looking for a mate, beings flocked to her. Soon the Unicorn had many children. There were small Dwarf Unicorns, with very little magic, but boundless energy. There were Wetland Unicorns, who could only live in the marshes, rather than being free to run where they pleased. There were the Ceridae, who reflected a pale shadow of her perfection, but yet were precious to her all the same. And many more, too numerous to name. The Unicorn was thrilled, and loved all her children. But, as the Arcanist had warned, all things comes with a price. The spell that enabled her to mate with others was taking some of her own energy and magic to create her children, and as time passed, the Unicorn began to realize that each time she mated and produced a foal, she became more tired, and her magic faded a little more. At last the day came that she did not have anything left to give, and she began to fade away completely. As she did so, the Arcanist’s second spell awoke. The Arcanist had not wanted the Unicorn’s joy to turn to grief. When He had cast the first spell, He had placed a second magic upon her as well, so that when the time came that she was too weak to live on Sornieth, her fading energy would travel to the stars. And there she stays, watching over all her children, and over the friends that helped her when she needed help the most. The First Unicorn

But though the Unicorn appeared to have everything she could ever want, she wasn’t happy. The one thing she yearned for most in all the world seemed to be completely out of her reach.
