Final Battle

You quickly place the Idol in the cage where Shadowbinder was contained. The real Shadowbinder glances at you, then at the Idol. At Her glance, shadows converge around the Idol and take on a full scale shadow version of Her form. The creatures slow their approach, and surround the illusory god.

With their attention directed elsewhere, the real Shadowbinder nods to you, then a portal opens beneath your feet.

They are in various states of disarray, but all who make it back are celebrating at least one perilous victory. As the encounter each other, and as they return to their homes, they tell tales of dungeon bosses and an ichor-drooling god. It was glorious, they say, how I distracted the golem with shiny pinecones! (All for the laudable goal of snatching a hat!*) They declare, The creatures swarmed us, but were no match for Shadowbinder’s magic and our snacks! I rescued Shadowbinder’s dice myself, they crow. And others speak softly of a cat (of all things), whose eyes glowed bright like the dice before ending up back here! After what seemed to be a very short adventure, they will be quite surprised to discover they’ve been gone nearly a week. Time to call off the search parties! Mostly. It appears that several dragons never left the portal world and their whereabouts are currently unknown. Perhaps Shadowbinder intends to retrieve them later. [Attic] You find an 8-sided die lying in the middle of an empty room. It looks suspiciously like a piece of Shadowbinder's new dice set. Upon picking up the die, you suddenly become aware of a large set of double doors you hadn’t noticed previously. After pocketing the die, you slowly, cautiously, open the wooden doors. They’re heavier than they look, but exactly as creaky as expected. You’re straining hard against the doors when suddenly they are yanked open from the other side. You stumble to the ground and find yourself looking at a pair of very large feet. As your eyes scan upward, there is a pair of armored knees, a torso covered in heavy plate, and finally a head with glowing blue eyes set behind an armored helmet. A great golem made of iron stares down at you. [columns]The golem keeps its distance at first, watching you carefully, but as soon as you bring out the Shimmering Pinecones, the construct lunges at you. That was close, but at least the pinecones seem to get its attention. You drop one on the ground to see what the golem will do. Whatever you were expecting, it wasn’t this. The golem rushes over to the pinecone and rapidly eats it, scattering a few little splinters on the ground. Seeing your strange, but usable chance, you drop the rest of the Pinecones and leap into the air. As the golem crams Pinecones into its face, you land unsteadily on the creature’s helmet. You grab, and pull. Beneath your claws you can feel the helmet give. WIN[nextcol]___[nextcol]You sprint and fly around the creature. It’s faster than it looks, but you manage to stay just ahead of it. You spin it in circles a few times, and with some well-timed twists and turns you find yourself behind it. With a few powerful wingbeats you lift yourself above its head and grab the helmet. Beneath your claws, you can feel the helmet give. WIN[nextcol]___[nextcol]You sprint and fly around the creature. It’s faster than it looks, but you manage to stay just ahead of it. As long as you keep moving, you shouldn’t have a problem. You fly higher up closer to its head, this is your chance. You reach out for the helmet, so close. Then you’re pulled rapidly away. The creature flings you away, and into some kind of portal. LOSE[/columns] Sixteen (16) dragons defeated the golem while one (1) dragon found they were unable to distract it. ----- [Cages] The room extends to your right, with a lever at the end. Something small floats above the lever. Upon closer inspection, you realize it is a 4 sided die. Perhaps one of Shadowbinder’s? You reach out and take it, but when you look up from the die in your claw, you see your other claw has pulled the lever already, as if it had a mind of its own. A pair of massive doors open before you. Before you is a truly titanic cage, and within it stands the Shadowbinder herself. Shadows congregate around Her, despite that the room itself is bright. There’s a nice, big, red button next to you, which the Shadowbinder gestures toward. You press the button. The cage swings open. Shadowbinder emerges. And so do dozens of tiny little skittering creatures crawling along the ceiling. [columns]You scatter your snacks behind you as you run. Sparing just a moment to look back, you see the swarm closing in. It seems to hesitate at the food, then envelops it. Shadowbinder trots beside you, quickly overtaking you. She picks you up with Her rear claw as She passes and begins to take flight. From your new view, you can see the swarm crowding in behind you, only briefly slowed by the snack. When you look ahead again, Shadowbinder is heading straight for the wall. You flinch, but there’s no impact. The dragon god opened a portal before Her and drags you through it. WIN [nextcol]__[nextcol]You quickly place the Shadowbinder Idol in the cage where Shadowbinder was contained. To your right, bars blocking the path forward suddenly lower and the door on the other side slowly swings open on its own. In the next room, there is a great tile mosaic in the floor of the Shadowbinder. It’s impressive work, but more importantly, there are dice scattered on top of it. Shadowbinder’s dice. The ones she seemed to use to get to this world to begin with. If the spell can be undone, hopefully it should transport you back home for good. He gets on his claws as quickly as possible, he assesses the golem to see if it has any weaknesses as Gloomwillow apparently haven't seen any yet. The answer comes to his mind quickly, out of nowhere, he can't remember if it's something he had learned many years ago or if the dungeon gave him the answer: they had to remove the golem's helmet! But how? He wasn't able to use his spells, and he wasn't known for being a great athlete like his friend Fireclaw. He clutches the amethyst, and wishes for something to help distract the golem long enough for them to remove the helmet from the golem's head. Before him, ten Shimmering Pinecones appear - they're floating in the air and emanate Shadow Magic. She had thought that by finding the Shadowbinder, the deity would have helped her escape as well...Though there was no time for Coppice to dwell on that, not with a giant iron golem bearing down on her. Thinking quickly, she grabbed some shimmering pinecones and tossed them at the golem. If she could distract it, maybe she could grab and remove its helmet - she recalled one of her clanmates mentioning that was how they had defeated one before...At least, she hoped so. They were heavier than he expected - once again, he wished he had his stronger clanmates for company - and creaked loudly as he pushed against them, claws scrabbling for grip against the stone floor. When the doors were suddenly yanked open from the other side, he sprawled to the floor. When he looked up, his grumbling came to an abrupt halt as he realised he was at the feet of an enormous, armoured golem. Loki had met plenty of golems before - his clan-mate Stark was an expert in creating them. He had never seen one quite so large and forbidding, though. He tried to dredge up from his memory what Stark had told him about golems and silently cursed the fact that his attention often wandered whenever Stark started monologuing about his engineering prowess. There was something about gloves. And helmets? The golem reached out one enormous hand towards him. The time for thinking had long passed. This golem was a Shadow creation - probably, since it was in this maze of rooms filled with Shadow trickery. Maybe it too could be distracted, just like the creatures that had attacked when he freed Shadowbinder, and then he'd have a chance to disable it. By removing the helmet, probably. It would be incredibly embarrassing if he was wrong, considering that one of his clan-mates talked about golems almost constantly! He dug around in his pockets, found the last few pinecones he had left and threw them at the golem. The Shadowbinder proceeded to carry them, if not necessarily to safety, then out of immediate danger. Kellmite was quiet, having failed to learn any new clues about their missing lair-mates. Perhaps it was only expected that the deity of secrets wouldn't be inclined to share. The deity was not with them in the new room the two Skydancers arrived in, and another die continued the figurative trail of breadcrumbs. The next set of doors (how many had it been? Kellmite hadn't bothered keeping track and Eada was sure she'd lost count), were the simplest so far. No tricks, traps or puzzles. They just needed to be dragged open. They were to learn that it was only natural for such an innocuous door to reveal their next challenge. Before they could finish forcing the doors apart, a mighty construct opened the way from the other side for itself. Eada despaired as she realised it would be impossible to go any further without first dealing with the golem. Fighting some mechanical monster was what the striped Skydancer had been hoping to avoid, and she had a sinking feeling that they'd spent far too long in the dungeon. Not much time was left to escape. The golem didn't wait around. Eada dashed one way, and Kellmite fluttered the other as the construct swung to attack. Kellmite scrabbled nervously in his bags. He wasn't sure how much he had left to throw, but it had worked well enough before, he felt. Several pinecones were left from when he first fetched some for that first puzzle door. Eada, seeing her brother distracted, fired a bolt at the golem to draw its attention away from him. At the sound of magic impacting metal, Kellmite remembered his immediate surroundings, and fluttered to a less foolish distance from the golem. But then the doors suddenly opened on their own, as if something had pulled them open. Nightshade looked up to see an enormous iron golem towering over her. Apparently, all the noise she'd been making struggling with the doors had woken it up. Even though its helmeted face didn't move, it did not seem happy to be disturbed, as it reached out with its fist to try to crush her. Nightshade quickly dodged out of the way and took to the air. The thought of using the pinecones again briefly crossed her mind, but she decided against it this time. She was a mighty Imperial. She wasn't going to let something like this intimidate her! She knew she was hopeless against such a monstrosity. Her mind clicked through all the random pieces of information she had read. Something about stealing a golem's helmet. She glanced at the monster before her. Whatever she had to do to it, she certainly was not going to accomplish it by force. The Golem reached towards her and Vespera's thoughts raced. The room extended to your right, with a lever at the end and on it, something quite small was hovering above it. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a 4 sided die and with my wrapped claws, I reached out to pluck it from the air. She pulled it out now, knowing what she must do. She threw her idol up towards the ceiling with one hand, simultaneously igniting a small pinch of iron powder with the other to cast Enlarge. One by one, dragons reappear in the place where the portal sucked them when this adventure began. They are in various states of disarray, but all who make it back are celebrating at least one perilous victory. As the encounter each other, and as they return to their homes, they tell tales of dungeon bosses and an ichor-drooling god.

It was glorious, they say, how I distracted the golem with shiny pinecones! (All for the laudable goal of snatching a hat!*)

They declare, The creatures swarmed us, but were no match for Shadowbinder’s magic and our snacks!

I rescued Shadowbinder’s dice myself,
they crow.

You find an 8-sided die lying in the middle of an empty room.

The golem keeps its distance at first, watching you carefully, but as soon as you bring out the Shimmering Pinecones, the construct lunges at you.

Beneath your claws, you can feel the helmet give.

You sprint and fly around the creature. It’s faster than it looks, but you manage to stay just ahead of it. As long as you keep moving, you shouldn’t have a problem. The room extends to your right, with a lever at the end.

You scatter your snacks behind you as you run.

With their attention directed elsewhere, the real Shadowbinder nods to you, then a portal opens beneath your feet.

Thirteen (13) dragons distracted the creatures and escaped with the Shadowbinder. Three dragons (3) were unable to deceive the swarm.

You find a single 12 sided die sitting on top of a table. Could it be one of Shadowbinder’s? When you reach toward it, it vanishes. After a moment, you begin to wonder if anything you thought you saw was really there.

As you pick up the dice, a long-haired grey cat appears. It seemed to come out of nowhere. The cat silently pads up to you and looks you right in the eye. You bend down to look at it and maybe pet it, but it steals one of the dice from your claws. It sits down and looks at you. The dice begin to glow, both the ones in your claws and the one in its mouth. It’s eyes are glowing too, and soon you are blinded by the light.

WIN
_
You gather all the dice in your claws. Admiring them, you shift them back and forth. As they click together, a faint light in the dice grows stronger and stronger until it’s blinding.

WIN
_
There seems to be some kind of change in the dice as they are put with the Pinecones. There’s a gently pulsing blue light. It’s like they’re resonating. The glow fades, and the dice lighten to a pale lavender. Suddenly, there’s a bright flash of light, blinding you.

WIN

Ten (10) dragons activated the dice, causing...something.

You pick yourself up off the ground, checking all your limbs are in the right places. Everything seems to be where it’s supposed to be. As you look around, you begin to realize, this isn’t the strange other world anymore. This is Sornieth! Shadowbinder, tall as a mountain and half obscured by shadows, sits beside you. Before you have a chance to react, She smiles (if that can be called a smile, with black goop oozing between her teeth) and thanks you for playing her game.

The End…

He shivers. "OK, so that didn't work last time...." He digs in his satchel. There's no more food left, but there are still some more pinecones. He flings them at the golem with a determined scowl.

Anything else? Seems like something's missing....Ah, yes, a battle cry. "WAKKA WAKKA WAKKA!" he screams.

The doors were heavy and creaked when being opened, not being able to use his magic to open them was a nuisance. He strained himself hard when the doors are suddenly yanked open from the other side, making him fall down on the floor. Gloomwillow is quick to fly into action, distracting the armoured iron golem that's about to crush him.

Hopefully they will distract the golem, and if not, they're in big trouble…

15935751.png Coppice's heart sank when she realized she was still trapped in the dungeon. She had thought that by finding the Shadowbinder, the deity would have helped her escape as well...Though there was no time for Coppice to dwell on that, not with a giant iron golem bearing down on her.

Thinking quickly, she grabbed some shimmering pinecones and tossed them at the golem. If she could distract it, maybe she could grab and remove its helmet - she recalled one of her clanmates mentioning that was how they had defeated one before...At least, she hoped so.
lundlaeva wrote:
56017.png He put the die into a pocket and then cautiously opened the wooden doors.

He really, really hoped that this was going to work.

The diversion wasn't quite as effective as Eada hoped.

29032161.png Despite her reluctance, though, Nightshade slipped this 8-sided die into a pouch alongside the others she'd collected, and as she did, a huge pair of double doors suddenly appeared before her. With nowhere else to go, she started pushing against them, but they were so heavy it felt like it might take ages to get through them.

With a roar that echoed off the walls of the chamber, Nightshade charged straight at the golem's head with all her might. That had to be its weak point, surely!

47196364.png A noise drew her attention to the far wall and she saw a set of double doors. Odd, Vespera could have sworn they were not there before. No matter, she walked over to them, her curiosity outweighing her fear. She tugged at them, but it was not her own strength that opened them. Something burst through from the other side and Vespera stumbled back. It was shimmering and huge. It was an iron golem.

This was not what Vespers signed up for.

Instintively, she rooted through her bag and pulled out the first shiny objects she could find. Hopefully they would be enough to distract the iron beast.

Is this what the clan's exalts feel when they go to serve their chosen deities? It is both a frightening and exhilarating thought.
Teensy's low groan snaps her attention back to the situation, and the approaching creatures that skitter along the ceiling. Briefly she considers tossing some of the food she has gathered for the clan to distract the critters, but that seems... wasteful somehow.

Besides, she is an Arcane dragon, and taking the most direct route is not always the right one.

Instead of throwing food at the creatures she conjures the Onyx Idol of Shadowbinder - when and where had she even found it? - and quickly replaces Shadowbinder with Shadowbinder, anxiously waiting for the result.

49533095.png Right when I was about to step on it and get the hell out of harms reach, everything went dark again. Another portal enveloped me and I found myself being dropped in yet another room. What was it with all the portal-jumps in this place?! To my surprise, I was holding an 8-sided die in my claws as well. Tucking it away with the other, I started to look around.

The room extended to your right, with a lever at the end and on it, something quite small was hovering above it. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a 4 sided die and with my wrapped claws, I reached out to pluck it from the air. Right at that second, my other claw developed a will on its own and pulled the lever as well! Whatever was going on right now, it wasn’t good… a trickster hates it the most, when it seems like they got tricked themselves. I felt uncomfortable in my skin, but hadn’t time to think about it longer as another pair of massive doors gave way to a truly gigantic cage! In it, something closely resembling Shadowbinder herself could be seen. After being confronted with so many illusions during this journey, I didn’t want to get my hopes up it could actually be the shadow deity. Her cage was congregated with shadows though; despite the room being so bright it actually hurt the eyes being in it. Now, figure inside the cage gestured towards a nice, big, red button to my left and though I ought to have known better, I pressed it. That same second, the cage swung open, who might actually be Shadowbinder emerged; and so did dozens of tiny little skittering creatures! I like cats and just about everything that walks or crawls, but those crawling creatures gave me the creeps! I didn’t want to get near them and as the Golem let itself being distracted by food so easily, I decided to throw some snacks at the creatures to slow them down. Fingers crossed they’ll go for it!.

30045934.png Fortuna gave a quick nod of deference to the Shadowbinder as she moved out of the cage. There was no time for anything more proper with the creatures quickly flooding the room.

Ever since moving from her birth clan in the Tangled Wood to her current residence in the icy south, the Shadow flight had stayed dear to her, nestling as a warm feeling in a small corner of her heart. Fortuna had kept the memory near to her in a more tangible form as well, in the form of a Shadowbinder idol kept within her mantle among all the paraphernalia of her current home and profession. She pulled it out now, knowing what she must do. She threw her idol up towards the ceiling with one hand, simultaneously igniting a small pinch of iron powder with the other to cast Enlarge. With a soft whumph, a huge onyx double to the Shadowbinder appeared in the room, crashing against the ceiling in its upward arc. Hopefully the creatures would be fooled for a moment, for enough time to let Fortuna and the Shadowbinder could slip out of the room.

It was rare for any dragon who hadn’t been ceremonially exalted to encounter on of the Eleven. He certainly hadn’t thought he ever would- a life in servitude had lost its appeal to him long ago. There was something about the sight of her that made his heart race and fur stand on end. His antennae could feel a deafening amount of magic coming from her, and yet the shadows about were her soft on his dark eyes, alluring. Xolotl might have stayed that way for a long time, staring frozen at his deity and crests fluffed up like a small animal facing a predator, save for the gesture she made to something beside him. Oh, a button. He gave his deity a sharp nod and pressed it.

The Shadowbinder stepped out of the cage, and just like that the ceiling was covered by a swarm of scuttling creatures he couldn’t quite make out. Lovely. Xolotl reached into his bags and tossed out a bunch of plantain leaves in their general direct. He highly doubted these things would eat pinecones, and he didn’t really have any more to spare anyway, but maybe those would slow them down.

Dice are important items to us rolists. Nah, I really shouldn't do that. It's not cool.
Plus I'm pretty sure the Shadowlady would be mad at me and... I don't want the DM of this world to be mad at me.

Suddenly she is falling back into another room with a thud. Really, you just had to leave me here. She thinks as she stands and makes sure everything is here. A look over at the die and then a sigh as it disappears. Just an illusion, it figures. She is thinking as she hears the sounds of movement and spins around to find the doors opening. Slowly she moves forward, ready to jump back at the sign of another creature. When there isn't any, she moves forward to inspect the tile.

It is a well-done mosaic of the Shadowbinder for sure, and the dice are all there. However, having seen what she has, she is sure there will be another trap if she just grabs them. A couple minutes of rummaging through her pack finds nothing with her to ward against magic, which makes her frown. However, she still has the pinecones from before. So now she takes out two handfuls and places them in a ring around the edge of the mosaic to see what happens.

Super normal here.

To his right, bars suddenly vanished into the floor opening a path into the next room.
Grandpa Toad gave a curious sound and nudged Gecko to go towards the sound, as it seems like to be the final room to invest. (well, Grandpa Toad was pretty much sick of exploring as well)
Gecko stepped forward and the mosaic tiles he found were acually very pretty and nice to see, that was somewhat enough to make up for the trip and the frog family discussed how they could copy it at thier swamp.
Maybe they could use pretty stones and mudbricks? Wartoad "Elder" would be happy to have such a nice resting spot.

Uncle Horned Frog then noticed some dice scattered ontop of the picture and jumped from Geckos back down to investigate.
The dice glowed dangerously and Gecko had a feeling of dread suddenly wash over him.
With a strange quiet but high pitched sound Gecko jumped to stop his Uncle from touching the dice, but happend to let his snout connect with the dice which then began to glow like some items in his bag as well.
