The desert of the Shifting Expanse has been packed down specifically for the millennial markets. Shifting Emporium. What an interesting name for this market and celebration for the Carnivale. Tents line the streets in wildly zig-zagging, crooked rows. The maze they create has you as enthralled as the wares you see. Colors shift beneath your feet as dragons move in their stalls and send the strings swaying. The merchants of the market are as mysterious as the market itself, and their wares reflect arcanic lore you’d only heard stories of as a hatchling. Everything seems unique and valuable, and you wonder how such a heaving mass of merchants can still all have their wares individual. You’ve yet to see a duplicate anywhere. “Pssst!” From the alley to your right, you hear the sound of someone looking for your attention. Shrugging, you decide to walk deeper into the alley. You think briefly on what wares you might find here. Perhaps a legendary sword, or enchanted battle armor. Arcane tomes thought lost to the ages, or the one small gift for a clanmate you’ve been searching for and didn’t realize. You’ve already found several of the last, and have a few clanmates you’ve yet to get something for. There’s only a few other dragons around compared to the masses lining the streets you just left, one of them a male Pearlcatcher whose shimmery, fire-tinged scales reflect the colorful lights dully. He’s sitting next to a stall idly spinning his pearl between his claws. He notices you and allows his face to make something of a smirk. “Ah, good, you joined us,” he said, front paw trapping the pearl's motion as he stands. “Would you like to play a game?” MAFIA is a popular party game adapted to forum use. You may also know this game as Werewolf. At its core, mafia is a social deduction game with roots in psychology, and gameplay includes paranoia, lies, deception, reasoning, logic, and a certain amount of skill. In a game, and in almost every game, a small group of mafia members (the informed minority) work together to deceive and kill town members (the uninformed majority), whose goal is to find and lynch (collectively kill) all members of the mafia before this occurs. This forms the core concept of the game: an uninformed majority pitted against an informed minority. What makes them informed or uninformed? The distinction is based on whether players know their teammates or not. Mafia members know who their teammates are, and can communicate and plan with their teammates privately. Town players know only their own alignment, and no other player’s alignment unless explicitly told otherwise. The game of mafia is split into two main phases, which together comprise one game phase. The first phase is the Day Phase, where players may discuss with each other who they believe to be members of the mafia. This is the phase where the most social interaction occurs. As the phase moves, the players also come to a consensus on which player, if any, they choose to lynch. The player with the highest number of votes at the end of the phase is removed from play, and the moderator reveals their alignment. Depending on the moderator, the game may be played with a night phase or as a nightless game. This game in particular uses a variant of nightless called Lockdown. All abilities are submitted during the day instead of during a night phase. The moderator uses the lockdown phase to tally actions and votes, and send night results as necessary to players. Lockdown may last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours in most games. Once lockdown has ended, the next day phase begins. The Mafia faction wins when they overpower the town in terms of numbers. The Town faction wins when they eliminate all members of the mafia from play. Town members want to identify other potential Town players in addition to their Mafia suspects to avoid lynching too many other town members. Mafia members want to appear as town-like as possible to avoid lynch and to cause Town lynches. Town’s guaranteed defense against mafia is the lynch, while Mafia also have a factional kill they can exercise each game phase. You should be interacting with this game as yourself, not through proxy of a dragon or other OC. Roleplaying in this game is highly discouraged.
This game will be fast. Game days are only 22 hours long, with a 2 hour lockdown to make a full 24-hour day. If you cannot commit to an estimate of 5-7 days of this, please do not sign up.
By way of this, this game will be VERY reading-heavy. This is not a game you can play for 30 minutes and then put down to come back the next day. You will likely want to be online for extended periods of time, and/or multiple times a day. Expect this game to reach 300-400 pages in length by the end of the game. Do not be surprised if this game has 80+ pages in the first day. Day 1 tends to be the most intense day in terms of length, but subsequent days will still be reading heavy. As a potential measure of length, last year’s TCC mafia game, Boss’ Beach Party Mafia, ended up over 400 pages long and 7 full game/IRL days.
There is no enforced length limit or minimum for the game to run. This game will last as long as it takes for one faction to win. Based on game design, I do not expect it to last longer than the festival week, but it may extend up to two days longer.
This game will be role-heavy. Expect to have some kind of role with an ability, though the extent of power may vary. While this game has been balanced to the best of our abilities, it has not undergone stringent review. Things may still be game-breaky and swingy. Your mileage may vary.
Expect this game to also be emotionally intense. While I and my comods do seek to keep this game as a safe environment to play productively and, ultimately, have fun, things WILL become heated, especially as the game goes on. Mafia is a game of social deduction and argument. People will needle you and aggressive play is expected. Arguments will most likely be contentious, if good-natured, and does not mean anyone in this game dislikes you personally. If you feel something is getting out of hand, however, please do not be afraid to bring it to our attention.
Ultimately, I hope you have fun while playing this game!
Basic Information Hosts/Moderators: kirkfan2255 and Arelia (with help from backup host Tsaiah) Game Style: Non-RP (roleplaying your role is highly discouraged) Setup Type: Closed (setup details are not public knowledge) Power Level: Role Madness (all players have at least one ability) Player Count: 20 Phase Length: 22 hour days with at most 2 hours for lockdown Start of Day: 17:00 FR for Lockdown start, 19:00 FR for Day start Start Date: July 21 at 16:00 FR Experience Requirement: None (Newbies welcome!) Please make sure you know the rules of the game before joining. These are the explicit guidelines I will be following in order to help ensure that the game is smooth as possible. General

By joining this game, you agree to abide by these rules within designated game threads for the duration of play. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse.
Game days are 22 hours long. There is no night phase; instead, there is a 2 hour lockdown phase beginning at 17:00 FR. During this time, you may continue posting until you see the RESERVED post(s). This post may be made at any point during lockdown. Lockdown ending early will not change the next EoD time, but will simply add time to the next game day.
Town and Mafia win conditions are public knowledge, and are listed in the Game Information post in the Discussion thread. Other win conditions may be present in the game, and any/all third party player(s) will be announced alongside their win condition(s) at the end of the game.
The game will reach a natural conclusion when a game-ending faction has achieved its win condition, or when no players belonging to a game-ending faction are left alive. A game-ending faction is one whose win condition directly contradicts the win condition of any other game-ending faction (Town and Mafia are both game-ending factions).
If three consecutive days and nights elapse without any faction making progress towards its win condition, the game will end in a draw.
This game does not have game clues hidden in flavor. Flavor in this game is for aesthetic purposes and enjoyment only.
I reserve the right to add or modify rules as I see fit while the game is in play, as no set of rules is ever complete. This will be announced to the thread as necessary.
I reserve the right to decline player participation at my discretion during sign-ups.
Word of Mod is final. I and any comods I may have are the final say, and I reserve the right to hand down punishment as I see fit. Please respect my judgement. If you wish to discuss a ruling, bring it to my inbox or post-game, do not discuss it in the thread while the game is ongoing.
Punishments may be a warning (in thread or privately), force-replacement, or modkill, depending on severity of the infraction. Generally, I will NOT modkill unless your slot’s integrity has been compromised.
Conduct

You should play to win, ie: play to your win condition. Gamethrowing is not appreciated.
Play with respect to both moderator(s) and your fellow players. There are people on the other side of the screen.
Faking breaking the rules is the same as breaking the rules. Play to the SPIRIT of the rules, not the LETTER.
If at any point you are uncertain about the rules, please do not hesitate to ask. In this case, it is NOT better to seek forgiveness than to ask permission.
Be civil. Aggressive and/or abrasive behavior is expected and allowed, but personal attacks against players is not okay. I will step in if I notice a major issue happening, but do not be afraid to ping me and/or message me if you see or experience something happening. My definition of what is too much may be different from yours.
Do not go out of your way to be obnoxious. Do not spam large gifs or images to the thread or make your posts unreadable (ex, transparent text, encryption, or size 1 text).
Do not use provable randomization.
Angleshooting is not allowed. Do not exploit loopholes, “ruleslawyer”, etc.
Baiting a modkill is not cool and will be punished.
Do not talk about other, ongoing mafia games, be it this one or any other game on or off the Flight Rising site, in a way that will compromise that game’s integrity. Anything more than “I am/was in X game” should not be talked about while it is in play.
Players are expected to abide not only by the rules placed on this game by me, but also to continue following all Rules and Guidelines and the Code of Conduct for Flight Rising at all times during the course of the game. Breaking either of these is grounds for immediate modkill without warning.
Activity and Posting

This game is a non-RP game. Do not RP a dragon and especially not your role.
Do not edit or delete posts. This is to prevent mafia from redacting slips. If you would like to delete a double-post of the same post, this is permissible.
Once you are dead, you are dead. There is no final goodbye, last words, or will. If you are no longer in the game for any reason, do not post in the game threads until the end of the game.
If you are not an active player in this game (such as, you are a spectator, substitute, or other community member that is not a moderator or staff member of Flight Rising), do not post in this game until after the game has finished.
If you are not in the game and would like to spectate, become a substitute, or have any questions or concerns, please PM any of the moderator(s).
Activity in this game counts as posting in the Discussion thread. You must post at least 3 time(s) per day phase. If you do not make 3 posts within a day phase, you will be prodded by PM. Missing it a second time will result in force replacement.
If, for any reason, you cannot make the post requirement for a day phase, please contact me immediately by PM or within your QuickTopic.
Communication

Private communication is defined as any communication that you have had directly with the moderator(s) or other players in the game through any means outside the game thread.
Out of thread (OOT), non-mod-sanctioned, game-related communication is not allowed with any living or substitute player. Certain roles may allow out of thread communication to occur. You will be informed of this by a moderator.
You may chat TO a person who is not alive in the game or a substitute (meaning you may chat with dead players, spectators, and unrelated community members) as long as you make it clear to the other person that they are not to respond. Dead players who are in both spoiled and unspoiled spectator chat are not to make any mention of the spectator chat or any spoilers known to spectator chat.
Replacement out of the game is to be done privately to a moderator by either PM or through your QT. rulesandguidelines.png

Please make sure you know the rules of the game before joining. These are the explicit guidelines I will be following in order to help ensure that the game is smooth as possible.
General
 • By joining this game, you agree to abide by these rules within designated game threads for the duration of play. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse.
 • Game days are 22 hours long.
 • Town and Mafia win conditions are public knowledge, and are listed in the Game Information post in the Discussion thread. Other win conditions may be present in the game, and any/all third party player(s) will be announced alongside their win condition(s) at the end of the game.
 • The game will reach a natural conclusion when a game-ending faction has achieved its win condition, or when no players belonging to a game-ending faction are left alive. A game-ending faction is one whose win condition directly contradicts the win condition of any other game-ending faction (Town and Mafia are both game-ending factions).
 • If three consecutive days and nights elapse without any faction making progress towards its win condition, the game will end in a draw.
 • This game does not have game clues hidden in flavor. Flavor in this game is for aesthetic purposes and enjoyment only.
 • I reserve the right to add or modify rules as I see fit while the game is in play, as no set of rules is ever complete. This will be announced to the thread as necessary.
 • I reserve the right to decline player participation at my discretion during sign-ups.
 • Word of Mod is final. I and any comods I may have are the final say, and I reserve the right to hand down punishment as I see fit. Please respect my judgement. If you wish to discuss a ruling, bring it to my inbox or post-game, do not discuss it in the thread while the game is ongoing.
 • Punishments may be a warning (in thread or privately), force-replacement, or modkill, depending on severity of the infraction. Generally, I will NOT modkill unless your slot’s integrity has been compromised.
horizontal_divider_blue.png

Conduct
 • You should play to win, ie: play to your win condition. Gamethrowing is not appreciated.
 • Play with respect to both moderator(s) and your fellow players. There are people on the other side of the screen.
 • Faking breaking the rules is the same as breaking the rules. Play to the SPIRIT of the rules, not the LETTER.
 • If at any point you are uncertain about the rules, please do not hesitate to ask. In this case, it is NOT better to seek forgiveness than to ask permission.
 • Be civil. Aggressive and/or abrasive behavior is expected and allowed, but personal attacks against players is not okay. I will step in if I notice a major issue happening, but do not be afraid to ping me and/or message me if you see or experience something happening. My definition of what is too much may be different from yours.
 • Do not go out of your way to be obnoxious. Do not spam large gifs or images to the thread or make your posts unreadable (ex, transparent text, encryption, or size 1 text).
 • Do not use provable randomization.
 • Angleshooting is not allowed. Do not exploit loopholes, “ruleslawyer”, etc.
 • Baiting a modkill is not cool and will be punished.
 • Do not talk about other, ongoing mafia games, be it this one or any other game on or off the Flight Rising site, in a way that will compromise that game’s integrity. Anything more than “I am/was in X game” should not be talked about while it is in play.
 • Players are expected to abide not only by the rules placed on this game by me, but also to continue following all Rules and Guidelines and the Code of Conduct for Flight Rising at all times during the course of the game. Breaking either of these is grounds for immediate modkill without warning.
horizontal_divider_blue.png

Activity and Posting
 • This game is a non-RP game. Do not RP a dragon and especially not your role.
 • Do not edit or delete posts. This is to prevent mafia from redacting slips. If you would like to delete a double-post of the same post, this is permissible.
 • Once you are dead, you are dead. There is no final goodbye, last words, or will. If you are no longer in the game for any reason, do not post in the game threads until the end of the game.
 • If you are not an active player in this game (such as, you are a spectator, substitute, or other community member that is not a moderator or staff member of Flight Rising), do not post in this game until after the game has finished.
 • If you are not in the game and would like to spectate, become a substitute, or have any questions or concerns, please PM any of the moderator(s).
 • Activity in this game counts as posting in the Discussion thread. You must post at least 3 time(s) per day phase. If you do not make 3 posts within a day phase, you will be prodded by PM. Missing it a second time will result in force replacement.
 • If, for any reason, you cannot make the post requirement for a day phase, please contact me immediately by PM or within your QuickTopic.
horizontal_divider_blue.png

Communication
 • Private communication is defined as any communication that you have had directly with the moderator(s) or other players in the game through any means outside the game thread.
 • Out of thread (OOT), non-mod-sanctioned, game-related communication is not allowed with any living or substitute player. Certain roles may allow out of thread communication to occur. You will be informed of this by a moderator.
 • You may chat TO a person who is not alive in the game or a substitute (meaning you may chat with dead players, spectators, and unrelated community members) as long as you make it clear to the other person that they are not to respond. Dead players who are in both spoiled and unspoiled spectator chat are not to make any mention of the spectator chat or any spoilers known to spectator chat.
 • Replacement out of the game is to be done privately to a moderator by either PM or through your QT. Do not post that you are replacing out in any game-related public thread or mod-sanctioned group chat. The moderator reserves the right to deny replacement for reasons that are not legitimate (such as “I don’t want to be mafia/town”).
 • Do not directly quote, copy-paste, or screenshot anything that you have been told through private communication. Paraphrasing is fine, as well as quoting from any game thread.
 • All players are given access to private QuickTopics, or QTs. Please use these for questions and for submission of actions. These are considered private communication. Do not share these links until the game has ended.
 • PLEASE make sure to check your QuickTopics. They are provided to you for a reason. You will receive any night action results and death notifications through QT. The only people who are allowed to view the QuickTopic are people who have the link to it. That will be you and the moderator(s) only while the game is ongoing.
 • PMing the moderator(s) should be done in an emergency only. Please use your QuickTopic for pretty much everything else. If you must PM, please include the game name in the subject.
 • Do not talk to players who are in this game about game-related things outside the thread unless otherwise given permission.
 • I will not lie to you. I may answer vaguely, or say “No comment” or “I cannot answer that at this time”, but I will not directly lie to you if you ask a question about the game.
 • Certain roles may override some of the rules stated. Please do not panic.
