As for the currency, I will generally go by treasure simply because they are the most present on the AH (though that might be changing). They also tend to be sold/bought more often, which lends itself to a more stable picture of the actual value of a familiar, imo. Sometimes though there just aren't any listing in treasure, or it just doesn't really make a difference. So I'd say that usually gems are fine, but then you have to go by gem value for the other familiars as well (I don't want to keep an up to date ratio).
