The Arcane Flight is a wonderful place to be... if you love constant peril, mad science, and the apocalypse coming over for tea every Tuesday. Arcanites aren't troublemakers, they're dreamers - trouble finds them, not the other way around, and it tends to be a rather rude awakening.

There's been a lot less of them recently, hasn't there? Even Starfall was... unusually non-apocalyptic.

There's a reason for that. And as monsters spoken of in whispered legends suddenly appear across the Isles, that reason needs your help.

Welcome to the Outbreak CYOA: the first adventure of the Soothsayer's Guild! This ambitious, multi-routed adventure gets your dragon, a wayward traveller, up close and personal with a mysterious organization known as the Arcane Anomaly Intervention Program, or AAIP.

During your adventures in the Focal Point, you may gain confidence in your version of the truth, represented with Conviction Points. However, if your actions net you too much attention, you'll be punished with Suspicion Points. How much you have of each can affect the outcome of your decisions down the line, so be smart!

For every day you post a continuation of your adventure, you'll gain 100 points in Arcane's OoF raffle (or IF, if you're an Arcanite!).

Define CYOA A Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) is a story in which YOU are the main character! You (or your dragon) take on the role of the hero and, as the story progresses, you make a series of choices which will determine the hero’s actions and the eventual outcome. On Flight Rising, the CYOA story is split into segments, which are posted periodically over the course of the week (see ‘About the Guild’ for more details). At the end of each segment, you will have 3 options to choose from. The option you pick will determine which part of the story you read next. CYOAs normally give you 24 hours to register your choice before posting the next segment of the story. That’s how we do it here, at least! At the end of the story, CYOA participants receive different endings based on their choices. About The Guild

The Soothsayer's Guild takes CYOAs to the next level through a number of mechanics not present in other adventures: Majority Rule, Dom Incentives, and Glimpses. These mechanics help make the CYOAs more rewarding to players, encourage players to return for the next installment, and bring Arcane to life!

cute_dot.png Majority Rule! cute_dot.png
Due to the chronologically weird circumstances the adventure takes place in, the number of players who undertake a certain action may influence how the action turns out!

Here's an example. Say the players are asked to choose sneaking down a hall or barreling in, claws blazing. If more players choose to sneak, then the ones who sneak will be successful, while the ones who barrel in will find themselves pinned down by countless guards!

This mechanic first appeared in the Starfall '17 CYOA, Urban Legends. The Soothsayer's Guild is that event's spiritual successor! Just like in Urban Legends, not every choice will have a majority count, and those that do will not be announced.

cute_dot.png Incentives! cute_dot.png
CYOAs are fun and all, but what makes the guild unique is is connection to Arcane Dominance by way of incentives! Participants will be rewarded for engaging with the Guild in the following ways:

  • Joining the CYOA scores you points for your eligible raffle (IF for Arcanites, OOF for all others), with more points awarded the more days you post and a big bonus if you complete your adventure!
  • Completing the adventure also gives you a special badge unique to every push, and to your ending! These badges will be drawn by LuminousNoble, who is also doing the push's graphics!
  • Advertising the push in your signature with the mad theorist Stellei gives you a Glimpse you can redeem at any time, even in a later adventure! Glimpses allow you to view a single outcome of a single choice, which will be PM'd to you.

cute_dot.png Glimpses! cute_dot.png
The Soothsayer's Guild will release another adventure for every significant push the Arcane Flight makes. What do glimpses do? Well, at any time you can redeem your Glimpse and be DM'd one successful result of the choice ahead of you.

Welcome to the Outbreak CYOA! You have until rollover to make your decision! The above posts will continue to receive edits until about 12:00 FRT. @TheSquishyKing The Starfall Isles are full of weird… things. To say any one thing takes the cake would be to do a great injustice to all the other things. But a giant squirmy germ is not something you expected to see today. That’s for darned sure. Your travels have taken you to the Focal Point, which really is a beautiful area. Conical landmasses drift almost aimlessly through the air surrounding the strange earthy ziggurat the Observatory rests upon, dancing ever upwards at a pace imperceptible to the eye but charted by centuries’ worth of loyal Arcanites. Glimmering pink spines line the landscape, jutting out of the ocean below and the grasses around. You can see the Starwood Strand, naked and quiet at this hour, as clearly as you can see the Observatory, cloaked in an eerie golden sheen and ever-guarding of its towering Eye. Sometimes there are monsters. Generally only closer to the Observatory, though. This thing just kind of came out of nowhere... and so did those uniformed guards. It’s a red and white Nocturne that seizes the massive cell, wrestling it out of your face and to the ground before jabbing a medical needle of Lightning origin into its membrane and injecting the glowy blue contents. The creature twitches a little, then goes more or less still, but the official-looking dragon waits a moment before she looks up to you, righting herself and slinging the dormant, once-floating bacteria over her shoulder. Oh, Arcanist, that’s so weird. “Apologies,” she says brusquely, turquoise eyes fixed firmly and apathetically on yours, “but we’ll need you to answer a few questions, then keep quiet about this little… incident. Can you do that for us?” As she speaks, her Pearlcatcher companion comes up with a strange, covered stretcher, which she lays the creature on, then scrapes some odd gel off her navy blue shirt. It’s then that you notice the badge she’s wearing - a seven-pointed star in a circle, engraved ‘AAIP’. Huh. That’s the last thing you notice clearly, though. Once the organism is covered, the Nocturne turns back to you and continues, disregarding any answer you may or may not have given. The questioning is a blur. You’re actually not sure if you process anything she says or any reply you give, but within a few minutes she rubs an eye with the heel of her paw, nods, and hitches the other side of the stretcher to some straps on her uniform. On her barked cue, she and the Pearlcatcher take off, heading down the Focal Point to somewhere below. You blink, and then suddenly the world falls into crystalline focus. These dragons, belonging to an organization you’ve never heard of, just saved you from an alien attack. Or did they? What’s a dragon to do?
  • Follow stealthily to get more information
I have a bad feeling about these dragons’ intentions…
  • Go right up to them and question them further
They did save me, but I deserve to know more
  • Stay back and mind your own business
If I need to find out more, I can do it without meddling

A strange looking thing attacks him and before he manages to fling a orb of raw Arcane magic at the creature in an attempt to obliterate it, a uniformed Nocturne jumps in, grabs it, wrestles it to the ground and jabs a needle in it.

The Nocturne quickly regains her composure and almost immediately starts to ask questions, while also making sure to warn him that he should stay quiet about what happened.

After that, she and a uniformed Pearlcatcher takes away the creature, leaving Unknown to wonder what that creature really is and who those uniformed guards are.

Unknown looks at Gloomwillow, hoping that maybe they know something that he doesn't.
doLnGJZ.png I've never seen dragons with those uniforms around the Isles, neither have I seen that star nor heard of that acronym before, Gloomwillow answers him telepathically.

Unknown decides that it's best to continue on his mission instead of following the guards, after all once he comes back to the Clan he could always ask Astronemus, a Scholar at The Observatory and member of his Clan, to give him more information about this organization.

However, something felt off when they asked him and Gloomwillow to stay quiet and refused to let him get a word in edgewise, despite the fact that he had introduced himself and his companion as being members of one of Arcane's most well-known clans. @LuminousNoble quick question, as I've never participated in one of these before..I picked my choice in the link that was provided, but in order to get raffle points, do I have to write stuff about my choice (like the poster above?) or is making my choice via the link enough? Either way this is fun, but if there's writing involved, I'd better get my creative hat on! :D

@Illyrael

Thanks for the question! Roleplaying is totally optional, but we encourage it - it makes things more interesting for us and for curious readers! But all you need to do to get the raffle points is reply via the Google form.

If you brought your creative hat, by all means put it on! It just isn't required~
