“It is no dishonor to leave your clan of birth. Many dragons must do the same. I did.”
Asherah looks to her mother, unable to tell if the words make her feel better or worse. She admires her mother, certainly. But admiration is very different from feeling ready to be her. “You’re grown,” she points out. “It’s not the same.”
Her mother snorts. “Do you think I came out of the egg like this? I was a hatchling once too, you know.”
The remark takes Asherah back. Of course she knows that her mother was born in a different clan. She was reminded every time she looked into those strange, dark-colored eyes. But she'd never really considered that her mother was also so young when she left. She tries to imagine how it must have felt, being an Arcane hatchling in a Light clan, separated from those who had raised her. It’s difficult. Asherah's home has always been in the Light. “Was it hard? Leaving your clan, I mean.”
“Yes.” There is no hesitation to the words. “Of course it was. Not knowing anyone, not knowing the land, always wondering if I’d be sent off to serve a foreign god. But there were good things, too. Adventures I never would’ve had, dragons I would’ve never met if I stayed in my birth clan.” She gives Asherah a pointed look. “Hatchlings who never would have hatched.”
Asherah thinks over this for a moment, trying to weigh the two sides. “But did the good outweigh the bad in the end?”
The older dragon only chuckles. “I’ll let you know when I get there.”
