He flared his nostrils, puffing once when he caught a glimpse of the runes engraved in it and caught the smell of pungent herbs which were strung up alongside the charm, and of the peculiar magic woven into the whole ensemble. A warding spell, he supposed. His mother had been working diligently with the clan's blacksmith to create those wards since the arrival of the small clan of dragons on the southwestern fringe of the clan's territory. Not all of the clan realized who the strangers were, but Sopedu had deduced their true nature based on the nature of his mother's nicknames for each individual in the small group - the strangers were all vampires. "My son!" Sopedu snapped to attention, turning away from the ghost to focus on his father, the clan's resident healer (and a necromancer, but Sopedu would never tell his clanmates about his father's less than savory magical practices). Viduus cocked his head, casting an eerie shadow across the ivory mask covering his head. "You look troubled, my son," he spoke. "Did you find more than you bargained for in the Tangled Wood?" "You could say that," Sopedu murmured. "I'd like your help, actually." Viduus sat neatly, tail curled around his feet. "Of course." Sopedu sat as well and delved into his tale about the nocturne that had attacked him - Viduus gave Sopedu's wings a cursory once-over as he listened to that part - and then of her request for help. When he at last fell silent, Viduus hummed thoughtfully. "You won't like what I'm about to propose." "What is it?" "Your son, I take it?" Empusa edged closer, her fangs glittering brightly in the pale moonlight. "You didn't say he was so handsome," she cooed, raising a paw to catch Sopedu's lower jaw in a surprisingly gentle grasp. He wondered why he'd never noticed. Empusa pressed her nose against his cheek, checking his scent curiously. "Oh, and he smells quite delightful, too!" she hummed. "Empusa," Viduus spoke, his voice stern and startlingly loud. The female stepped away from Sopedu at once, huffing. Sopedu shook his head, startled by how easily he'd succumbed to her magic-laden voice. "Remember our agreement," Viduus hissed at the vampire in warning. Empusa seemed unfazed, her lackadaisical smile still in place. "Of course," she mused. "I wonder what nocturne tastes like." Viduus watched her for a moment. Then he leaned close to his son, offering him a charm resembling the ward that had been hanging above the healer's alcove. "For now, you should wear one of those silver charms I had your mother enchant for the... Singer hatchlings you mentioned.." Sopedu nodded warily, taking the proffered charm.

When he notice everyone else had forgotten about the magnificient dragons, he was perplexed. He had vague memories, but they were memories. He set off with his close compatriots, Irides and Fal. One night, while rides and Fal were gathering supplies for camp, Crackler wandered off into the woods. This is when he met Shadowsong. After his encounter, he ran off at once to tell his friends. At first they were skeptical and reluctantly agreed to search for this Thana person. Irides: The Light Mage Irides was one of Crackler's best friends at the Observatory. While Crackler was there to study technology, Irides was there to study magic, specifically divine light magic. She was a prodigy with divine light magic and was offered to become a head researcher of the Observatory, but she declined so that she could live a peaceful life. She was of the very few who remembered the Nocturnes from last year vividly. When Crackler proposed they research if they had really existed, she agreed because of her vivid memory of the event. Fal: The Duelist and Dancer Before Crackler set off to learn at the Observator, Fal was his closest friend. Crackler had an odd dream of making machines work in a rhythm like a dancer. The two were not friends at first, but when Crackler asked to watch Fal's dancing to try and learn how to make a rhythmic machine, Fal reluctantly agreed. The two grew closer ever since. When Crackler returned from the Observatory in search of info about the Nocturnes, Fal was confused. He had completely forgotten about the strange event that happened a year ago. Despite this, Fal tagged along with his friend in order to help protect him on the long journey to come. As Crackler left the wounded Shadowsong, thoughts rushed through his head. Thoughts like "How am I going to do this?" or "Do I leave my allies to protect them?" or "Maybe that Nocturne was lying? Maybe she was a mimic?". As the thoughts rushed through his head to quick to process, Crackler arrived at camp and he didn't even realize in his confusion. Seeing the fire his allies set up and the now concerned Irides approaching him, Crackler let out a blast of lightning from his container. He was confused, he didn't even know what was going on anymore. He didn't know if he could trust anyone. He could barely stand and he attacked a close friend. Irides, concerned and now confused, opened her palm and placed on Crackler's forehead. Crackler began to raise another lightning blast, but began to calm down. Realizing what Irides did, Crackler thanked her saying, "Thank you... I'm sorry for what I did... I'm just confused right now." After moments of silence, Fal spoke up, "Where did you run off to and what spooked you to the point of insanity?" Fal was on edge as usual in the Shadow Flight realm. It was clear he wanted a straight forward answer. A brief pause arrived until Crackler spoke again, "I met the nocturne Shadowsong. She was injured and needed help.... Her sister, Thana, attacked her and stole two nocturne hatchlings." Irides speaks up, "I suppose there is something more to these hatchlings than meets the eye if Shadowsong was protecting them." Replying, Crackler said, "Indeed. The two hatchlings were Singers. Thana, previously thought to be normal, is also a singer, and a rogue one at that. Shadowsong needs us to hunt Thana down and rescue the hatchlings." Irides and Fal, shocked by what they were told, began to feel tired. Both requested they sleep on the dangerous request. Crackler agreed and they went to sleep. As they woke up, Fal and Irides agreed that this was too big to leave alone for too long. Hearing this, Crackler lit up with joy, worry, excitement, and every other emotion imaginable; but, he still agreed with them. Fal: "We'll need to know what direction Thana took if we want to find her. Can you take us to where you met Shadowsong, Crackler?" Crackler: "Of course, though I don't if she'll still be there or if she'll even be alive." Irides: "If she is there, I can heal her using my magic." Crackler: "I was hoping you would say that." Crackler, doing his best to remind himself of the route he took to get back from Shadowsong, led the group to a small area where the brambles and trees separated into an small open field. Laying on a rock there, was the wounded Shadowsong. Weak, but still holding onto her life, Shadowsong raised her head. Crackler pointed and Irides jolted over to heal the nocturne. After what seemed like ages, Irides returned. Irides: "She'll be fine for a little while. I did everything I could, but I'm out of breath now. She needs to see a surgeon or an alchemist." Fal: "Okay then, let's go ask her where Thana went." Crackler and Irides: "Agreed." Arriving at the half-beaten to death nocturne, Crackler realized how badly Shadowsong had been wounded. Bleeding from the neck down, clearly broken bones, an entirely destroyed eye, corrupted marks from magic, holes in her wings. How did she survive? She should be dead by now. Crackler and Fal thought. Shadowsong: "Make it quick, young ones." Fal: "What direction did Thana go to? Did you hear anything during your battle?" Shadowsong: "... Hmmm... Hmmm... She mentioned something about The Pillar of the World and the Wyrmwound. Other than that no. Now, hurry up and leave before Thana escapes." Following Shadowsong's knowledge, the group trailed behind Thana. After many weeks of searching and many battles and many encounters with Thana herself, the group finally tracked her to a forgotten forge in The Ashfall Waste. [still in progress]

Bleeding from the neck down, clearly broken bones, an entirely destroyed eye, corrupted marks from magic, holes in her wings. How did she survive? She should be dead by now. Crackler and Fal thought.
Shadowsong: "Make it quick, young ones."
Fal: "What direction did Thana go to? Did you hear anything during your battle?"
Shadowsong: "... Hmmm... Hmmm... She mentioned something about The Pillar of the World and the Wyrmwound. Other than that no. Now, hurry up and leave before Thana escapes."

Following Shadowsong's knowledge, the group trailed behind Thana. After many weeks of searching and many battles and many encounters with Thana herself, the group finally tracked her to a forgotten forge in The Ashfall Waste.
