Background
Fading Coatls are the result of a naturally fire-attuned dragon being confined to unnatural habitats. Coatls are known for being most tied to their original element of Fire, and being restricted from returning causes bloodlines of non-Fire Coatls to lose pigment in their plumage. This is especially common in the Ice and Earth regions.

Coatls, according to legend, were created by the Flamecaller to dwell in Her arid land of eternal fire. Of all the dragon species created by the Deities, Coatls feel the most attached to their native element. A Coatl with no fire in their heart is no Coatl at all, they would say.
Yet, as the early ancestors of each breed grew in number, they expanded their settlements outside of their native homeland. Coatls were not as easily swayed to leave their burning land, but eventually, they also began to spread out. However, their fierce love of the Flamecaller brought many back to the Ashfall Wastes on annual pilgrimages, sometimes braving long, perilous journeys just to see Her again.
Sometimes the journey was just too difficult, or their newfounded mixed-breed clans simply did not wish to accommodate their Coatls' natural instincts, keeping them far from their homeland for too long. Those who could not make the trip back to the Ashfall Wastes began to lose color in their usually vibrant plumage, a sign of sickness and misfortune. The longer they stayed away, the more their colors faded, eventually leaving some individuals completely devoid of their natural vibrance.
As these Coatls began to fade away, so too did their energy. Coatls that have become Faded tend to show signs of depression. They become sluggish, forgetful, and show a lack of focus. Many prefer to be alone, hiding among the countless colorless objects they hoard to make themselves feel brighter. Some separate completely from their clans in an attempt to find their own way back to the Ashfall Wastes, but often become lost or simply wither to nothing due to their Fading condition.
Despite the hardships Fading brings to Coatls, some have the constitution to live with it. Often, Faded Coatls will become necromancers in the hopes that if they bring life to others, they can bring life to themselves. Their newfound dark magic sometimes causes worry to their clanmates, thinking that necromancy is a slippery slope that leads down the path of the Shade.
The intensity of Fading typically depends on the Coatl's distance from the Ashfall Wastes. Faded Coatls are very common in Dragonhome, the land of Earth, due to its far distance from the Ashfall Wastes. Despite its proximity to the Ashfall Wastes, the Southern Icefield is actually the most common location of this unfortunate breed. The harsh winter winds quickly sap Ice-native Coatls of their plumage, making the Southern Icefield the least hospitable home for a Coatl. Even Water, being the natural opposite of Fire, provides a warmer, more welcoming climate than many other places due to its proximity to the Ashfall Wastes.
Those Coatls who become faded can pass this trait on to their hatchlings if they live long enough to breed. The life expectancy of a Faded Coatl is significantly shorter than a non-Faded Coatl, usually being shortened to just a quarter of the lifespan of their non-Faded cousins.
