There is a reason why you do not keep your eggs near the reactor. Strange things befall the hatchlings inside; marking them with an uncertain fate.

Sudden egg death with no discernible cause is the first hurdle to survive. The second is hatching at all. Eggs can become too thick and plated, or so thin a nesting parent accidentally crushes it.

Surviving that, it is possible that mutations can occur. Not always, perhaps one in five survivors and always striking with randomness. These mutations can be severe, and they are strangely specific.

Scales will grow extra thick on parts of the body; spines and spurs will appear in places that a normal breed does not have. Wings may be reduced or lost, while scything claws are gained. Perhaps just an extra pair. Maybe two. Maybe more.

The eyes; there can be many, or none. Occasionally you get mandibles. Occasionally the mandibles also have teeth. Any part of one of these dragons may be infused with metal or something glowing. They rattle and hiss, whistle and scream. Some have stingers and antenna and glossy translucent wings. Tufts of fur and long frills.

The symptoms can be mild, or terrifying.

Concerned parents may take their young away to safety, try to fix them. Some may abandon these dragons of no discernable breed. If a parent is careless, they may find their nest missing their strangest child. Rescued by its mysterious, mutant kin.

These mutant kin call themselves the Hivekind. They care for each other because no one else will. They live high in the walls of the spire, where they have changed it to be home. Any dragons with this affliction are drawn to it; somehow they know it is safety for them.

This home has been dubbed the hive, out of sight of most dragons and never spoken of to ‘normal’ dragons. The misfits and outcasts afflicted with the reactor’s aura join together as a single family. It is a rare few that are still able to breed, continuing the affliction to their young. This rarely lasts more than a generation, where the ability is lost again.

Some members are proud of what they are. They did not choose their struggles, their looks, and their challenges. But they would carve their way into the world and help those of their kind to follow. There is an active project to try and regain their ability to breed and become self sustaining- to become their own lineage beyond the normal types of dragon.

Wary of outsiders not like themselves, some may emotionally isolate themselves on purpose when out in the world. It’s rare that they do, and can be dangerous. But everything for them is dangerous. It is life, as they say.

They are born and live as survivors in a harsh world, working together to not just survive, but thrive..
