As he rolled over and stood, he became aware of the several open wounds on his body that had begun to sting and fester from the saltwater and sand that stuck to him. He shook, tossing off most of the beach debris. He took the time to examine himself. His scales were dirty with grime and dried blood, and some were even chipped and flaking off. He had several cuts, as if he'd gotten into a fight with a Kamaitachi. Many of them were open and oozing, a few had begun to scab over. A long scar trailed down his left shoulder to his neck, and the scales it passed over were warped, as if they'd healed improperly. His wings were a bit tattered as well, but only the very edges of the membrane. He stretched them, only to hiss in pain as his right wing joint caught and sent a flare of pain down to the tip of his shoulder. He promptly folded them, unwilling to subject himself to that pain again. He wasn't going to be flying any time soon. Instead, he gazed up at the massive forest in front of him. Immediately he knew this was the Viridian Labyrinth, although where he came up with such a conclusion was beyond him. As he stared at the swaying trees, he swore he could hear the faintest of hums, like a sweet songbird calling to him in the early hours of daybreak. All thought left his mind as he focused on the sound, and before he could register what he was doing, he began to head directly into the thick forest. All he could focus on was that beautiful sound, as if the source was his long lost Charge. He came to a clearing, and in the center was a single Skydancer laying in a makeshift nest of thick grass and weeds. The Skydancer's antennae twitched, and she turned her head. She gave Kryon the sweetest smile he'd ever seen, and it was as if he'd been struck in the chest with an iron arrow. She was the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen, like an angel directly from the heavens. The delicate patches of shimmery orange- almost gold- caught the sun in just a way that it seemed like she was glowing, and Kryon couldn't tear his eyes away. The stripes that adorned her body almost seemed to dance and peel straight away from her body, and they circled and danced around him, as if they were alive. "Oh, dear, you're bleeding! Let me- hey? Hey!" He only barely registered her voice before he was enveloped with darkness once again.

Awaken.

It sounded distant. Kryon barely registered the voice, and for a brief moment he even wondered if he was just hearing things. He sat in darkness and pondered this for what felt like ages. He could see nothing, only the black void that surrounded him. He floated aimlessly,

Awaken.

Now it sounded closer, and carried a different tone than before. Kryon turned around and as he did, he registered a dull pain in his hips. It was more of an annoyance than actually painful, as if he'd been laying down for too long and his joints got stiff. He stretched, letting out a satisfying grunt as his spines stretched out and his joints began to loosen.

He gazed around the darkness, still only seeing the nothingness that he'd come to accept.

AWAKEN.

He jolted awake, letting out several gasps and coughs as his lungs filled with air and forced water out. He choked and sputtered for several moments before he was able to regain control of his breathing. The sting of saltwater lingered in his throat and chest as he took several deep breaths. Slowly he looked around, expecting to see the darkness, but saw that he had been laying on a secluded, sandy beach. He looked out towards the ocean, now realizing that, somehow, he'd washed ashore. A Wildclaw, green and gold and blue, in the distance. The way their wings shimmered and sparkled reminded Lacey of that dragon, the one that took her Rasuro away. In fact, it was the very same one. She recognized him by the scar over his eye. She had given it to him trying to save Rasuro. Rage filled her body as her feathers fanned out. Revenge was within her grasp, and she wasn’t going to let the opportunity slip by. Silently she followed him, and when he was alone, she lunged out of the darkness at him with a snarl. She tackled him to the ground, her front claws pinning his wings and arms down while her back feet pinned his feet down just above the ankles, well out of the way of his dew claws. “You,” she spat, her voice dripping with venom, “You’re the one who killed him; you killed Rasuro!” The wildclaw’s eyes widened in shock as he looked up at her. Of course he recognized her, how could he forget the dragon that took his eyesight? He struggled against her, but she kept him pinned down, her body buzzing with Arcane magic. “I- I swear, I was, I was just, following orders-!” Lacey cut him off, the tip of her snout pressed against his. Her lips curled up in a snarl, a pink glow radiating from within her throat. “I’m going to kill you.” She growled lowly, her claws digging into the wildclaw’s scales. He hissed in pain as he continued to struggle, trying to break free from her powerful grip. She opened her mouth as pink sparks began to gather at the back of her throat as she prepared a powerful Arcane Bolt. But as she looked down at him, something told her to stop. She hesitated, and slowly the sparks faded. With a growl she let him go, and took a step back as he scrambled up. “I.. I can’t do it.” She muttered to herself, her anger fading away into grief once more. She refused to stoop as low as he had, to take the life of someone who didn’t deserve it. “Rasuro would’ve forgiven you. But I don’t. Get out of here before I change my mind.” She growled, and before she could even react the wildclaw flew off, flecks of blood dripping onto the ground from his wrists and ankles. You have a kind heart, Lacey. She shook her head, muttering to herself. She swears she can still hear Rasuro talking to her, as if he were right there with her. She turned to head back home as grey clouds gathered overhead. By the time she got to her den, it was raining, and she was cold. Without a word she tossed her bag aside and retreated to her fortress of blankets and feathers. The darkness hung over her like a thick fog, and she felt the tight, possessive grip of grief and sorrow dig into her. She wasn’t ready to move on without Rasuro.

“And when the magic reaches the conductor, it’ll generate a small electrical charge, which you can then…”

Gods, this seminar was dreadfully boring. While the professor droned on and the scribble of pencils and clacking of computers filled the air, Lacey’s mind was occupied elsewhere.

It has been a week since she her mate, Rasuro, had been taken from her. A clan of thieves stopped the pair during their travels and tried to rob them. Rasuro and Lacey fought back as hard as they could, but Rasuro was too badly injured. She was heartbroken, upon hearing the news her entire world shattered.

She tried to return to her studies. She tried to focus on the schooling that her parents had paid so much for. But she just couldn’t; she was constantly struggling with herself to move on faster than she was truly ready.

Her head swam, her body was tired. She couldn’t do this anymore. Not without him. She didn’t even notice that the seminar was over until she heard the chatter of the students leaving.

She packed up her things and made her way into the flow of students in the large hall, mindful of the smaller dragons under her and bigger ones above her. Once she was out of the building she spread her wings and got ready to take off.

But she stopped. She hesitated for a moment, and she wasn’t sure why until she looked up.

A Wildclaw, green and gold and blue, in the distance. The way their wings shimmered and sparkled reminded Lacey of that dragon, the one that took her Rasuro away. In fact, it was the very same one.

The wildclaw’s eyes widened in shock as he looked up at her.
