Laws
The Gale Corsairs, being a band of pirates, don't have much in the way of laws or a centralized form of justice. Kai has, however, instated a system of laws - the Triple Decree - in order to prevent the chaos that would doubtlessly arise from a complete lack of rules.
The Triple Decree: the good of the clan comes before the good of any single dragon. Any actions taken that could, directly or indirectly, have a negative effect on the Corsairs and associated groups, will be severely punished.
- Traitors will not be tolerated. Any fights or disputes must be handled publicly and openly; perpetrators of inner-clan assassinations and other forms of backstabbing will be punished severely.
- Treasure and other items of value obtained with the help of clan members (through piracy or other means) is to be shared with the entire clan, not hoarded. Keeping treasure to yourself when peers helped you to obtain it is a punishable offense.
- Progeny are the future of the clan, and must be treated with care and diligence. Dragons unable to properly feed or care for hatchlings should not reproduce. Abuse of hatchlings, in any way, shape, or form, is a capital offense.
There are also several unspoken laws among the clan - particularly, that Kai's word is law. Kai decides when dragons are to be exalted, who the clan robs next, and how to punish offenders of the Triple Decree. However, these laws are often very loosely punished; as long as one is not caught openly disobeying the Decree or has not personally offended Kai, they are very unlikely to be punished.
Catriona presents a milder, more sympathetic figure than her husband, but offending her has just as deadly of a consequence, if not more so, as Catriona often goes through a less direct means of punishment - she is not above stooping to torture or worse.
Religions
Orthodox Sorniethan
Notable followers: Vespera, Rowan, Rhamnello
Most dragons are followers of Orthodox Sorniethan - the belief that every deity is equally important and powerful. Followers are technically supposed to show equal honor to all of the Eleven, but most show a particular loyalty to the deity of their birthplace and/or current residence. Flight holidays are days of worship for followers; they are encouraged to fast and attend prayers during these days.
Church of Duality:
Notable followers: Nyx, Nocturne, Wren
The Church of Duality draws heavily from Orthodox Sorniethan in many of its beliefs and practices, but it advocates balance in all things and emphasizes the goddesses of duality above all others: Light and Shadow, and Nature and Plague. As such, the religion is particularly powerful among members of these flights, but the religion is not necessarily restricted to those flights alone. Followers are supposed to pray at dusk and dawn, as well as during flight festivals, always facing in the direction of the sun or moon (whichever is more visible at the time).
Ecclesia Morbus
Notable followers: Kai, Ophilia
Ecclesia Morbus is a cult religion, popularized by Kai, that worships the Plaguebringer above all others, sometimes going so far as to say that she is the only "true" deity. Ecclesia Morbus followers go on pilgramges to the Scarred Wasteland during Plague's festival; most (but not all) are also participants in more occult practices, including blood magic and sacrifices to the Plaguebringer. Ecclesia Morbus looks down on most other religions.
Aura Latros
Notable followers: Aria, Moriko
Aura Latros is a religion dedicated to the Windsinger; although usually not as extreme as Ecclesia Morbus, followers often scoff at the ideals of balance that Orthodox Sorniethan and the Church of Duality advocate. They lay between Ecclesia Morbus and Orthodox Sorniethan when it comes to levels of extremism. Aura Latros shrines are found all over the Windswept Plateu; followers frequently leave offerings of art, fine foods, candles, and poetry, in an attempt to get the Windsinger to return home.
