There once was a mirror that had made peace with his impending death. In his reckless enthusiasm for the hunt, he sustained a grievous injury, and in trying to keep up with his comrades he had only worsened his condition; at last, he found himself too exhausted and battered to keep up. Left behind by the wild and traditional pack, he closed his eyes and awaited the nothing beyond. He had lived at full throttle from the moment he hatched; now, finally, he could lie still. It was then that his guardian angel appeared. Sweeping through the dense jungle like some mighty specter, eyes fixed ahead, a frown tugging the corners of her mouth, she almost brushed past the figure crumpled in the dirt. Instead, mid-step, the dragon froze, and her head swiveled to look down at the mirror, his own unseeing gaze fixed to the leafy canopy. There was a moment of silence- then, like an apparition, she strode away and vanished into the encroaching jungle dusk. Some minutes later, however, she reappeared, and this time, she approached the mirror directly, settling on the ground before him. He noticed her this time, and through his shallow breaths, he tried to hiss at her. Without a word, she reached around, dragged something off her back, and pressed it to his mouth. Water droplets teased his tongue, and after a moment, he instinctually drank from the bowl she had presented. The guardian smiled at this. Selflessly, tirelessly, the newcomer threw herself into caring for the dying beast she had found. Ignoring his weakly bared fangs, she built a shelter around him to protect him from the elements; brushing off his feverish growls, she brought him fresh prey to eat, caught in snares and nets and well-aimed jaws. Murmuring to him, she cleaned and bandaged his festering wounds and set his broken bones with splints. Slowly but surely, he healed; as he healed, his demeanor toward her changed. Day in and out, he watched her work, only allowing herself rest if he had been seen to first. He began to ask questions; she answered, even if he couldn't quite understand her explanations. He began to simply converse, rusty and awkward; she indulged him, chatting back, warm and engaging. ...and at last, the mirror was fully healed. The guardian watched proudly as he tested his limits, racing around the camp she had built, leaping and twisting with the enthusiasm of a caffienated spiral. Beaming, panting, he told her he was better than ever; smiling in return, she told him he was free. He asked her what she would do now- after all, she was free now, too. She had no answer. He asked her if he could stay here, with her, in the camp he had come to think of as home. She told him she would like that.

Amethyst and Moss have remained a close-knit pair since those early days, and while the clan has long since passed from their management, they remain involved in its perpetuation and upkeep, even after moving locations several times. Having found themselves ill-suited to truly manage a growing community, the founders passed the bulk of responsibility to a new candidate quite early on, hoping to see their found family grow and become stronger than they alone could have fostered. <Last edit Sunday, August 27th, 2023, 12:27 FR time>
