Each flight's dragons eventually created new, Flight-specific titles, though they all embrace the grim name of Lich. The Elemental Lichs' intentions in granting the Shade this foothold is to make their bodies into battlegrounds against it: either by fighting it in their own small way, or attempting to wrest some of its power for themselves, or even to study its effects. No dragon planning on allying with the Shade will be granted the gift of a deity’s magic. The Elemental Lich is firmly convinced that mastery of all available magics, and survival of the most brutal trials, will prove the strongest dragons, those most worthy of survival. The Necromantic Trials are a natural attraction to them; the progression to fighting a vast cosmic force is, while perhaps foolhardy, an almost natural next step. They empower and test their own elemental mastery until their very pigment alters to match their eyes. This is believed to be either the influence of that magic which colors their eyes simply strengthening and spreading, or possibly the very blessing of their own Flight’s deity. Once they are thus prepared, the dragon begins their Necromantic Trial. An Elemental Lich’s plans must be kept secret from greater Necromancer Society, lest the candidate be persecuted or even killed for their intentions in dealing with the Shade at all. * During their Trial, the dragon must succeed on its own terms. Despite the prospective Elemental Lich first seeking their own Flight's empowerment, Plaguebringer is a deity who demands loyalty. It may be that She tolerates the Elemental Lichs’ methods in the view that She is 'poaching' powerful dragons from other Flights; regardless, unless their primary loyalty is to Her, She is unlikely to ever grace them with Her touch. Should individual Elemental Lichs take to worshipping both She and their native deity later on, it is only another damning tick against them in the fiercely Plaguebringer-loyal Necromancer society as a whole. Thus, only if their intentions are pure at the start of the Trial will Plaguebringer grant them Her contagions. Upon wresting control of the plague during their Trial of Survival, the dragon immediately offers the Shade a small niche in their own body and soul. This is almost always greedily taken. The Necromancer stripes forming along the dragon's body then darken, though unlike other Lichs, the Elemental Lich with their added training typically retains far more control—at least to begin with. The Trial of Contagion must then be taken with the additional burden of the Shade attempting to gain a stronger foothold; its power may not be used to assist in this trial, lest Plaguebringer harshly reject them. As such, until the final Trial is complete, the candidate is facing an even more difficult challenge than is typical. A deceitful dragon that begins the Trial without the intention to truly battle the Shade (for example, intending instead to use its power for personal gain, or even align themselves with it) will meet Plaguebringer’s wrath: the contagion that initially infects them is a trap, one sprung the instant they invite the Shade into their bodies. These dragons will not win their battle: either Plaguebringer’s infections purge the Shade, leaving them a Shadewrought Ghoul, or the Shade overtakes them, leaving them a Festering Shade. * [columns]Henceforth the Elemental Lich's body is a battleground against the Shade. This battleground takes different forms depending upon the Flight. Constant meditation and vigilance against one's own thoughts, along with persistent and often exhausting use of their magics to keep any creeping Shade from spreading through their bodies or minds, are the only things to keep the Lich intact. The danger is extreme. An Elemental Lich can backslide and become Ashen, or be consumed by the Shade altogether. They see this risk as a trade-off for further power and understanding of their enemy. Due to the inherent risk, Elemental Lichs are more social (with one another) than are many other Necromancers. Some form cabals to hoard power, joining forces to prove their combined strength. Many also form small, close-knit groups or simply pairs so they might keep watch over one another at all times. This can however backfire, should one or more succumb to the Shade's influence and work to sabotage their allies instead. In terms of powers, Elemental Lichs hold the ability to manipulate Plague, to use their native element's magic, and—if they wish to risk it, perhaps in times of emergency—to wield the Shade's powers. The latter is extremely dangerous to use as it can easily give the Shade a stronger foothold or allow it to suddenly subsume the dragon altogether, and is usually only touched upon in very dire emergencies or very, very sparingly in their more cautious testing. In general, the strength of the Shade merely empowers the dragon’s other abilities, as it does with typical Lichs, making them formidable Necromancers. In regards to their beliefs, the Elemental Lichs generally hold a great and primary respect for Plaguebringer and a determination to prove themselves in Her eyes, but at the same time may still hold faith in their own Flights’ deities. All else aside, their dedication to the ideals and trials of the Necromancer—to survive and triumph against brutal adversity, and prove their worth—is a driving force in their chosen life path.[nextcol]|[nextcol][/columns] * The reactions of other Necromancers to this new variant vary widely. Most see them as any Lich: an abomination to be hunted and destroyed. Others view them with scholarly interest, or a scientific eye, and a few see them as misguided fools. Still others are deeply concerned that the Elemental Lich is a new trick of the Shade: temptation offered en masse in an attempt to create hosts that are essentially sleeper agents, spread throughout dragonkind. The decision whether to condemn, isolate, or study them is, for now, somewhat split. Either way, a potential Elemental Lich keeps their intentions hidden from those who might not approve, and must stay hidden from greater Necromancer society if they wish to remain safe from persecution or reprisal. A typical Lich comes into being when a dragon attempting the Necromantic Trials, or one who has previously passed them, succumbs to the Shade. These dragons may have fallen prey to its whispers of power, or believed themselves strong enough to use the Shade's magic without corruption, or grasped desperately at a last thread for survival as the Trial's plague ravaged their bodies. These dragons are generally considered failures, are magically powerful, and are seen as a travesty by true Necromancers (who will often hunt them or kill them on sight).

The Ongoing Battle

An Elemental Lich must be ever-vigilant against the effects the Shade has on body and mind. The body is shored up with plague and their native element, barring the Shade any further passage, but on occasion there are mistakes. The mind is defended by constant meditation and affirmations of purpose, but the Shade's nature can easily twist one's thoughts. So intense is the risk that some dragons can succumb to madness without the Shade's intervention, their own anxieties ever deepening and convincing them that they are already losing their battle.

It is difficult to regain flesh or soul taken by the Shade, and many Elemental Lichs succumb, but far more gradually than the catastrophic failures otherwise seen at the Wyrmwound—so it can be hard for them to determine the exact point at which they finally lose their fight.

Colors: Oranges, reds, and yellows. First among the Elemental Lichs were the Smoldering Lichs: Fire-element dragons who observed Plague comrades taking the Necromantic Trials. These dragons became convinced that they, too, could succeed in this; some, driven by brazen bravado, swore they could conquer the Shade, as well. These dragons goaded one another on, sparring and training in the Ashfall Waste and Boneyard in ever-more-intense tests. They dove into volcanic calderas and flew through the smoke of burning plague, and deemed their gradually changing pigment to be a gift from Flamecaller herself, before finally setting off past the Boneyard for their Trials. Those who succeeded came away with control of Plague and a touch of Shade. More than most, the Smoldering Lich's element lends itself well to combatting the Shade: light and heat are an antithesis to darkness and cold, and that foolish bravado can push back apathy. The Smoldering Lich's Plagues tend to be direct and intense, but lacking subtlety or precision, often utilizing scorched-earth contagions with high fevers and burn-like gangrene. Smoldering Lichs value bright and fiery eye colors, such as Faceted, Primal and Glowing. Plague - Festering Lich Values: The strength of life proven against hardship; cunning and skill. The Chosen of Mother, after all, should not be left behind in this. The Festering Lich training is highly personal, and often involves a mentorship with an experienced and morally dubious Necromancer or other Elemental Lich. The Festering Lich has doubled down on the power of the Plague flight. Their bodies are a battleground between festering sickness and the Shade struggling to maintain a foothold in an infected body. Fire - Smoldering Lich
Values: Inner fire, literal light and heat, stubborn ferocity.

Plague - Festering Lich
Values: The strength of life proven against hardship; cunning and skill.
Colors: Sickly greens and reds.
Second among the Elemental Lichs, the first Festering Lichs warily watched the Smoldering Lichs succeed before quickly following suit. The Festering Lich often delights in the macabre and the gruesome, perhaps driven toward this indulgence by the Shade, but their powers with a Necromancer’s Infectionist Arts are unsurpassed among all other Elemental Lichs. Primal and Glowing eyes are held in high regard among the Festering Lichs.

Earth - Graven Lich
Values: Strength, resilience and tenacity.
Colors: Various browns and brown-grays.
The Graven Lich tends to see themselves as a carved gargoyle standing sentry against its enemies. A Graven Lich’s training may vary, but often involves the gruelling task—forgoing food or rest until it is complete—of shaping a shrine from disease-imbued stone to honor Plaguebringer. These dragons are tough, both physically and mentally; any time the Shade advances, they retaliate by using their elemental magic to harden and petrify the area of their body that it has claimed. Initially seen as a sign of weakness (where a dragon has let the Shade advance), it is now seen as a battle-scar and an icon of victory. Eye type is of no consequence to the Graven Lich; they consider themselves above such minor concerns.

Nature - Thornheart Lich
Values: Growth and life, survival and change.
Colors: Browns and greens.
The Thornheart Lich embraces overgrowth, delighting in combining disease with nature while using their bodies as a battleground to test weapons against the Shade. Thornheart Lichs are often scarred with jagged, poisonous thorns grown from their scales, or entwined with briar and vine so thick it can be hard for an enemy to reach their hide in a fight. Many, however, seem to have forgotten that life must be grown with caution, lest it overwhelm; their growth is created with abandon, left to spread wildly in their wake. These Thornhearts believe that what is strong enough to survive, should; and what isn't, shouldn't. In some newly blossoming Thornheart training circles, a young dragon is only considered ready for the Trials after creating a new and twisted form of plant life that can survive the tests that others may throw at it. When a Thornheart Lich begins to lose its battle with the Shade, the diseased growth across their bodies may blacken and become sinister and oily. Primal eyes, with growth blooming from the sockets, are considered a high honor to bear.

Arcane - Sorcerer-Lich
Values: Knowledge, prediction, intellect.
Colors: Pinks and purples.
"Knowledge is power" is the supreme mantra of the Arcane Lich. Candidates can spend much of their lives in schooling and training before ever undertaking their Trial. Each is expected to hold some level of intellectual excellency. While there's not (yet) any form of official "school" for these dragons, many have nevertheless made a "graduation" tradition of writing a full dissertation on the reasoning for their taking the Trials before striking out to actually take them. The Sorcerer-Lich’s internal battleground is one of constant warding and magic against Shade; the Shade infection preys on their confidence and "knowledge," using logic to subvert their beliefs. A very stubborn Sorcerer-Lich can simply refuse the Shade's ideals, but ironically the open-minded among them may find it difficult to refute the Shade's more twisted logic. Sorcerer-Lichs value Multi-Gaze eyes as a sign of all-knowing, all-seeing wisdom, and Primal eyes as a sign of magical prowess.

Wind - Howling Lich
Values: Freedom, innovation, personal power.
Colors: Pale blues, greens, and whites; grays, with darker more common for Storm Lichs.
The Howling Lich's internal battleground is one of deep, often isolated, meditation along with practicing the opposite of the Shade's values (peace and patience to its impulsive hunger), relentlessly wearing down their enemy. The battle is overall a weak one; those wielding the power of Wind find it difficult to fight off the Shade except in slow and determined increments, but the Shade, in turn, finds it harder to gain a foothold in a calm and disciplined mind. Many would-be Howling Lichs prepare by training beneath an older, wiser dragon for some time before retreating to meditate alone for several months. Only when they have achieved some form of inner peace do they depart for the Wyrmwound for their Necromantic Trial. Primal eye types are particularly valued, seen as the wisping of the wind itself, but no eye type is held in low regard or as an omen.

Storm Lich: A Wind dragon may partner with a Lightning dragon to create what they term a Storm Lich pair. The peaceful nature of the first can combine with the ferocity of the second to strengthen both in their individual battles. Typically these dragons take their Trials together, and emerge with hues of dark and stormy grays as if their respective deities have acknowledged their partnership, but some join forces later on in life, and may or may not have a similar alteration of pigment. The loss of one of the pair can easily plummet the survivor into darkness.

Lightning - Thundering Lich
Values: Relentless power, overwhelming surgical strikes, the wrath of nature.
Colors: Electric blues, whites, and stormy grays, darker more common for Storm Liches (see above).
The Lightning Lich tends to be a dragon separate from others, and one who remains close to nature, circling in storm clouds while holding to its meditations. Its internal battleground consists of an electrical charging of the body to sear away the Shade. Static electric sparks commonly run across the body of a Thundering Lich, visibly dancing between scales in low light. Some are tinkerers, attempting to create electrically powered devices to contain or combat the Shade. Their training may include creating such a device successfully, or for some, a more primal journey high into the sky during an intense storm to test their faith, skill, and endurance. Ice - Frost Lich
Values: Stasis, resistance to change, tenacity in the face of adversity, and stoicism.
Colors: Icy whites and light blues.
Taking their cues from the Gaoler's charge, Frost Lichs are the formidable figure threatening to freeze the Shade's advance in place. Many train with the few willing Gaolers who will have them, learning to utilize their elemental magic specifically to combat Shade before they ever depart for their Trials, though most have to keep their true intentions hidden. Their Necromantic magic often manifests in chills and frostbite-like effects. Frost Lichs place value on ensuring their meditation and every thought are as crystal clear as ice and free from Shade's taint: as a result, others may find their measured, emotionless responses to be rather cold. Shadow - Dark Lich
Values: Subterfuge, mischief, subversion.
Colors: Dark shades, tending toward blues, blacks and violets.
A Dark Lich's internal battleground is one of meditation, trickery and pure power. A Dark Lich constantly tells themselves that the Shade is but a wretched echo of their better, truer darkness: the power of their Flight. They must convince themselves; and in this, it's all too easy for the Shade's whispers—or even only the dragon's own mind—to gain the upper hand and flip these beliefs the other way. Water - Abyssal Lich
Values: Immense power, versatility, adaptability.
Colors: Blues and greens, from light to abyssal dark.
The Abyssal Lich's battle is one made up of shoring up constantly-changing defenses. Residual plague and Shade taint migrate persistently across these dragons’ bodies. Outsiders may see it as a constant and failing battle; the tenacious Abyssal Lich sees it as a constant failed attempt to destroy them. Abyssal Lichs hold a rite before they undertake the Necromantic Trials: an acolyte is to venture to the deepest, darkest, and coldest ocean depths entirely alone, and remain there without food or company for seven days. Light - Enlightened Lich
Values: Enlightenment, warmth (both physical and social), stoicism.
Colors: Golds, whites, silvers.
Light-born Lichs are a confident, or some might say arrogant, group. Some even suspect this to be the influence of the Shade. It can't be denied that their element is, like that of Fire, a natural antithesis to darkness. But—many dragons ask—what can a beam of light really do?
