(Oh gosh sorry where have the days been going... I am getting my butt kicked haha I keep arriving home and falling straight asleep)

The air thrummed with tension as a brief silence descended after Spinner’s words. Even the birds had paused their song, and the trees rustled quietly. The bright early-morning sun was harsh as Julius squinted up towards the others.

“Wait there,” he said eventually. “Thank you, Spinner, but I would not ask either of you to make a definitive decision without seeing the evidence first.”

He flitted over to the tent and retrieved the chunk of strange masonry from Elian’s bag, bringing it out for the others to see. Lathair stared down at it for a long, quiet moment, and then with a heaving sigh he glanced to the tops of the trees.

“And you aren’t going to tell the Magister any of this. Or the Professors.”

“Whether they have anything to do with it or not, they will try to stop us,” was all he said. “Or they’ll tell someone else who will.”

Lathair looked to them all in turn, and Julius held that gaze as it swept over him. Then the old dragon sighed again, and he said, “I can’t leave you three here alone. And it is…it is an old seal of the Academy’s. I can’t say I think the same as you, that if we mentioned this we’d be stopped—I think they’d be interested—but we can’t be separated again. They sent us here as a team, and we’re still here as a team.” He looked grim. “But if we stay here, what happens to Elian?”

It was a relief, and something of a surprise. They were all in agreement. More than that, Lathair was right. They were a team. He was far from used to working in a team.

He thought of Elian, still lying cold on one of the stretchers in the medical tent. Some part of him had expected Lathair and Spinner to leave, and that would have also taken care of Elian’s final resting place, but now they had to think about that as well—and Julius had no idea what to say. What could they do? His experience stopped at the point of death.

(No worries! I understand, hopefully as time goes on the adjustment gets easier )

Spinner silently looked at the symbol. That was bad. The fact Lathair decided to stay was worse. More people to take care of. What a bother. He stayed quiet as they decided what to do with Elian, that was the least of his concern. As soon as was possible, he knew he had to inform his Kiani .

Aspen listened carefully to Lathair's words. She was so happy he did really think of them as a team. It touched her, and she smiled broadly. "That's right, we are a team," Aspen said, looking between them all. She would not let anyone get separated again, everybody had to stick together this time around.

"Elian..." she sighed, looking to where his body was. She hated to be the one to suggest this, but it didn't seem like anyone else had an idea. "We could wrap his body and bury it here." Aspen suggested, gesturing to a place about 15 feet or so away from them. It wouldn't be the first time she'd have done that.

Julius was relieved that at least one of them had an idea. In the scarred wasteland there had been little time for sentimentality surrounding death, and though the clans he had worked with had their own varied views and rituals, he was rarely a part of them. He supposed there was a grim sort of familiarity in this situation—they were in danger, and had to deal with the dead and move on quickly.

When nobody objected to Aspen’s plan he excused himself to the medical tent again, and wrapped Elian’s cold body in sheets and bandages in the most dignified way he could manage. Then he stopped, hovering, and stared at the bundle. He had barely known the dragon, and yet couldn’t help but feel he owed him something—this, at least, whatever this was. A burial. A few people to care.

He couldn’t carry the much larger pearlcatcher, and so he called the others over to the tent.

“The Academy will be expecting us back before long, so if we want to stay under their radar we’re going to have to abandon the camp—maybe make it look like we were run off, or attacked, or…” he was losing the point, and cleared his throat awkwardly. Lathair was glaring again. “Does anyone want to say anything?”

Aspen was surprised no one objected to her plan. No, that wasn't right. She was actually surprised Lathair didn't object, like he had to an autopsy. After Julius called them over, she looked over poor Elian. That smart, intelligent, absolute moron. Shaking her head silently, she looked up as Julius spoke.

"I can destroy anything if need be," The mirror offered, looking fondly at the tents that would be so fun to rip up. "However, we still need some supplies," Aspen added on second thought. Well... she didn't care much for tents but she figured the other dragons may like sleeping in them.

Aspen shook her head at the mention of saying anything about Julius. She hadn't spoken much to Elian, so it didn't feel quite right.

*

Spinner walked over silently with the group, making note of Lathair's glaring expression at Julius. How silly, he couldn't have cared for Elian that much. Even the other team members got over it quite fast. Still needing to act as an emotional dragon, however, he looked very solemn and quiet.

Once Julius decided to stop rambling, Spinner chimed in. "I would like to say a few words... if nobody minds," he said nervously. "Elian and I didn't know each other as well as I would've liked, but we had a nice friendship that was growing. I'm so sorry I couldn't h- help you..." Spinner trailed off, sounding like he was getting choked up.

Of course inwardly he was trying not to laugh at the irony of his own little speech. Oh, if only they knew, maybe they would want to laugh too.

Julius was still and silent while the others spoke: Spinner first, with an uncomfortable display of emotion, and then Lathair with a few heartfelt words. When an uneasy quiet fell once again he raised his head and glanced around.

“If you would—” he said, with a nod to Lathair, and the other dragon lifted Elian and carried him out to where Aspen had suggested they bury him.

By the time the final clumps of earth fell and covered the grave, the sun was pulling itself towards its zenith. They split up to do and gather whatever they needed before they were to set off.

Julius, once again alone in the medical tent, went through Elian’s bag one last time and packed the supplies into his own bags—now very aware that the river he had so carefully tested for potable water might not be of use to them for much longer, depending on where their path led. He packed the relevant testing equipment. As for food, he wasn’t quite sure what they would do now that the one of them who specialised in such things was gone. The rest of his bags he filled with bandages and salves and potions to numb pain and facilitate recovery. He couldn’t help but wonder if any of it would be enough. The only thing they knew for certain in this place was that danger came in unexpected forms.

When he had as much as he could carry, he swept the remaining equipment off the tables and upended the cots nearest the tent flap in the hopes it might look as though the place had been ransacked. He didn’t know how convincing that would be, but it was better than nothing.

The small memorial they had for Elian was sad, but Aspen had become accustomed to people dying when they did not obey the rules of the wild. Letting out a small sigh, she was relieved to see him buried and at peace. Now everyone could move on and continue the mission at hand.

After that was over, Aspen looked at her tent with glee. She hadn't used it once, and now she got the pleasure of ripping it to shreds. Beginning with the top, she used her razor sharp talons to shred down the sides. Even using her teeth to bite and pull. Spitting out a few pieces of it, she looked at her master piece. Perfect. It was viciously destroyed.

Once done, she offered the same service to Spinner, who was just coming out of his tent with a single pack. Looking surprised, he accepted.

*
As soon as the funeral for Elian was over, he walked back to his tent to gather some things as well as contact Kiani while looking glum. Julius found a relic in Elian's pack, the whole team decided to stay and trick University into thinking they were attacked. Going to be very hard to take care of all of them. Ideas?

After he sent the message, he waited for a reply as long as he could until he finally walked out of the tent with a pack on his side. Taking up Aspen's offer was easy. It would make her happy and not suspicious if he went with the plan. Also, who wouldn't like to see a little destruction of University property?

(I’m thinking we’re going to have to involve the shady in-university cadre soon, if you have any ideas for them! I might Kiani meet with a representative who is very annoyed at her needing to contact them, but other than that I think they are mostly mysterious to everyone right now haha)

Kiani had been feeling smug. Until the point where everything went wrong, she would have said she was basking in the glow of a job well done, but the message she received from Spinner not hours after the good news exposed that ugly complacency for what it really was. She typed in response: What?? and promptly deleted it. That was no help. She’d already excused herself and begun the journey down several flights of stairs to the cafeteria when she felt the buzz of a notification, and now she paused in a thankfully deserted stairwell, pocketed the communications device again and tried to think.

The professors were getting nervous. They’d all bundled glumly into the office to speculate on the data yet again while they waited for the others, and it had been long enough now that everyone was waiting for the word that the exploration team had returned. Now, she was the only one here who knew it wasn’t going to come.

Spinner was in trouble. They were in trouble. Outnumbered three to one with the rest of the team on the trail of what they shouldn’t have known, there was no way he could kill them all—and if he did, what would it look like when the Academy found him, the lone survivor of a series of increasingly unlikely events?

I think you should help them. Maybe even tell them some of the truth, because if they’re interested in this, there’s a good chance they’ll run into danger themselves. Use your judgement. For now hold still and I’ll contact our superiors.

It had been exactly what she’d been hoping to avoid.

*

Julius eyed the remains of Aspen’s tent with equal amounts awe and trepidation. It certainly made his attempt to knock a few things over look lacklustre. “Do you have something against habitation?” he asked when she returned from doing the same to Spinner’s, hoping she caught the amusement in the fanning of his crest. They could do with a little lightness. “That looks practiced. Maybe you could have a go at the medical tent.”

Despite the lingering tensions, Julius was glad everyone had agreed to stay. They had that working in their favour, and they already had two potential sites for careful investigation. He’d enacted shakier plans alone, with less preparation.

(Yeah! I can have a character in their little shadow group, and you'll have one too so it'll be perfect!)

Spinner was able to have some time alone when he "went to go to the bathroom". He read over Kiani's message twice, just to be sure he understood what she meant. Deciding to do as she says, for now, he replied Understood . He was sure she would let him know as soon as she got more or different orders.

This would be very interesting, basically playing double agent for a while by feeding them some information. However, he would have to be very cautious.

*

Aspen laughed lightly at Julius. "Why yes, actually. I've never been very fond of tents. They're really only good for destroying," she said, shrugging. "I would love to do this to the medical tent, you mean it?" she asked, already starting to walk in that direction. Yes, it would be very fun. Perhaps she could throw some unused vials as well!

For now, she would enjoy her fun. It would only be a matter of time before they ran into serious danger again, was her guess. With Lathair at least she would have some back up. Whatever they would uncover, she was sure it would be worth it.

(Ooo that sounds good!)

This was the sort of thing that couldn’t wait for everybody else’s schedule. When Kiani returned with enough coffees and pastries to feed an army, she feigned illness and stress and nibbled at a croissant for a while until Lettie fussed that she should go and rest up, promising they would keep her updated with any important developments. Kiani made only the slightest show of protest.

Back in her rooms she penned a letter—a series of innocuous phrases that would read as small-talk to anyone but the intended recipient—and signed it with a name that was not her own. She took a winding route down to the mail room, avoiding any chance she might run into one of the others out on some other useless task, and when nobody else was around she placed it in a certain empty pigeonhole. Then she made her way to the library, to wait for the contact to meet her.

*

Julius did mean it. When Aspen was done he had to admit that the camp did look a lot like some beast—perhaps similar to the one they had encountered yesterday—had run them out of there. While it wouldn’t stop anyone coming to look for them, it would at least mean the Academy did so under assumption that they were in trouble, not that they were the trouble.

“We could head in the same direction as last time,” he suggested, once they were all gathered again. “At least we know what we might encounter out there now. Or we could try heading in a direction the jungle is less dense. Reports suggested there were a lot of different biomes on this island. Either way, we should decide quickly.”
