custom rules:

when i gain a hatchling(s), i immediately roll to see if they will survive up until dragonhood via the regular hatchling rolls X many times, where X is the number of days until they're adults

to complete this challenge i need to get both Alegria and Swampie up to lvl 25. if one dies, it still goes on but with needing to get the other to lvl 25. if both die then follow regular rules

level 25s are treated as having infinite lives and are invulnerable to death bonds. this basically means that they can't leave the challenge and are safe, but can still be selected for events

The last team that took on this task failed miserably, and the Skydancer was the unlucky fellow chosen to be 'promoted' as the new manager of the place. With gritted teeth he took on the job, knowing that it's unlikely to end well for him knowing the track record of everyone shoved down here. At least, if he makes it, he will most definitely please Boss, and he won't go down without a fight. "'Ey, boss!" Violin's rough voice took him out of his thoughts and back into the real world. He spotted the mangy Coatl poking her head out of a dusty cleaning cupboard, and with her an... egg? "What should I do with this? We're not a nursery, so I could send it off back up." Considering what's happened down here before, an egg being left behind could prove useful to spotting the side effects that he and his co-workers will need to look out for. Hand picked? Is that the new buzzword floating around upstairs? She stood up and kicked her chair back against the wall, before storming off muttering under her breath. Seeing the glass vials, test tubes, and the familiar sterile smell cast his mind back to his past job as a researcher. He always wanted to live up to his parents' name, to prove himself to be just as capable as they are in the workforce. To live in the Turrets of Goldensparc meant to be pushing the boundaries of science, to improve dragonkind with every successful test. That's why he chose this path in life. A deafening clatter of objects falling to the ground made him yelp. It wasn't him. "Who's there?" His voice felt a little too loud for where he was. Hushed whispering came from within the supply closet, of which the door was just slightly ajar. Two distinct voices, but neither of them were Slania's nor Violin's. He'd heard rumours about what had happened down here, horrific experiments gone rogue, the Beastclan workers turning against the scientists, but he never really took them to heart. There were no other employees he was told that were working down here. The fingers of doubt began to wrap around his mind, his feet pointed towards the exit door. No. He was the boss around here. Before emotion took over his body, Waipo marched to the door and threw it open, glaring into the dark closet. It took him a moment to find the culprit, or more rather, the culprits. Down, hidden behind a crate, were a pair of shivering scrawny hatchlings. An Obelisk and an Imperial, with the scruffy Obelisk cowering behind the Imperial, who was snarling and raising her wings to make herself look larger. "More hatchlings?" He crouched down to reach their level, giving the Imperial a chance to swipe at his face. "Oh, you're a feisty one!" He easily dodged it. "Calm down, I'm a friend. I'm Waipo. What's your name little one?" After a couple more growls, she hesitantly answered "Xochi. This is Virgo.". Virgo itched at the patches missing in his mane. He smiled at them with kind eyes. "Come on Xochi, Virgo. Let's get you two to a better place than here. This is no place for you."

She had gone to the trouble of ordering paints and brushes from the above, making up a benign reason that the walls needed repainting, and only Virgo had touched the red paint can. Xochi was glumly looking down at her claws, tracing out symbols in the tiled floor. "'Ey, what's the matter prawn? Don't know what to draw? Do you want, uhm, crayons? Pencils?" Violin scooted over to her, pondering whether to wrap her arm or her wing around her. "No... I just want mama back." Xochi sighed and rested her head on her paws, watching Virgo wipe streaks of red on his wings. "Oh. Well, your momma isn't here." Violin stood up, ruffling Xochi's mane. She batted away her hand, though Violin didn't notice her distaste to her gesture as she walked forwards without any pause. "Come on, follow me. I'll ask the big guys if they can bring you both back up to the surface. Some outdoor fun would do you both good. Only the adults should be breathing in manky air like this down here." She playfully pulled Virgo along with her tail, waiting for Xochi to follow suit. The silent corridor was populated by the sound of Virgo chattering away with Xochi, with the Obelisk's footprints marking crimson globs on the floor. As they approached the head office, Violin paused as she heard Waipo having a heated argument with someone. "No, we obviously haven't started picking up where the last group left off! We're only three dragons, and the main power generator is just barely working! We need more hands down here if you want results of any kind, because currently both researchers are busy doing maintenance work. What's the hold up with that?" Violin stretched out her wings, silencing the two hatchlings. She pressed an ear to the still-scorched door, thanking that she still hadn't fixed the padding in the walls yet, though she really should get on that. "...so by the end of this week? I'm sorry, sir, but that's only four days from today. Alright, yes. I'll make it work. Yes, apologies for my snapping. I will have a report sent over by then. Thank you, goodbye." The sound of the phone being put down and footsteps alerted Violin. She attempted to scuttle backwards before Waipo slid open the door a little too aggressively. His body was tense, movement rigid as he cast a furious gaze towards her. He didn't have to speak to let her know that he didn't have time for any nonsense. "'E- 'ey, boss. I was thinking that we should send these little ones up. It'll get in the way of work to take care of them both." She stammered out, stiff as a plank. Xochi and Virgo hid behind her tail, peeking up towards Waipo. "Go ahead. Team meeting is in twenty minutes." The trio ran off as quickly as they could from the tangled ball of stress.

As they rustled through the documents the last head engineer had left behind, clock ticking behind them, they pondered what they would have for breakfast that day. There was no natural sunlight down here, but the facility's lights automatically turned on at 6 o'clock every day without fail, and their room had accidentally been wired to match that pattern as well. At first they wanted to fix up the wiring, groggy mind affecting their ability to think straight, but having the peace and quiet of the hum of electricity as they had their morning canned fruits was soothing. Plus the others slept in, giving them time to look like they were productive the previous evening. It was time for the daily checks. First thing: Egg. They hadn't seen any changes in the egg's properties in the past week. Still the same Lightning magic coming off of it, same dimensions, temperature, and no movement. There was a chicken egg incubator found in the rubble of one room, and it was doing the trick nicely despite being battered with a couple dents. They weren't ready for the mess that was in there. In the centre, where the egg had been incubating, the hatch was now tossed in the corner, edges singed and still smoking. Fragments of the shell laid scattered across the room, no longer crackling with magical energy. As they dashed to the broken incubator and looked inside they saw no hatchling, only the smouldering remains of the straw crackling inside. "Rusted screws and bolthoppers, where's the blasted thing gone?" Slania cursed to themself and popped their mug of coffee to the side, now searching high and low. There was no sign of anything else living in the room, and the cameras hadn't been installed yet so they couldn't check those. "Boss is going to kill me when he wakes up. Darn!" ~ "Let's play hide and seek!" "Alright! Penny, you're seeker!" "Hey! No, you first!"

He rubbed his face and attempted to hide a yawn behind his hands, white teeth flashing. "How's the progress with the egg? Any changes?" He picked up one of the many pens scattered across his desk and started rifling through a pile of papers. "Oh! Uhh, yeah. No changes yet, boss! Still the same as yesterday, yeah." Violin's crest feathers flattened, averting her gaze. "I can go check in with Slania if you want some numbers. Here, I'll go do that right now." She chuckled nervously, praying that he won't prod any further. He raised a hand to stop her from running off like a rabbit into the woods. "I'm not done yet. Look, take a seat," he gestured to the stool, "don't be worried.". Once Violin awkwardly sat herself down, Waipo pushed towards her a clipboard that held a list of highly specific items. "If we want to be able to produce results then we're going to need stuff. Specifically the stuff I put down on there. Now, between myself swimming in mind-numbing forms, Slania dealing with the egg and maintenance, and yourself, I've decided that you're best suited to the job." Violin opened her mouth to interject, but Waipo answered her question before she asked. "I know, you've also been doing a lot of work and maintenance too, but you'll be compensated adequately for this. All you need to do is send off a request to the dragons on the surface and get the items. That, or just find them somewhere else. I don't care how you get them. You've been good, and the higher ups are pleased with your performance so far, so I trust you the most to do this for me. So, will you take on this role?" A giddy smile spread across her face upon hearing the news, tongue flicking out. "Why, boss, I just do my job around here! I'm honoured to be considered for this, yes, and that you are pleased with my performance! I won't let you down. Coatl's honour." She scooped up the clipboard and looked it over, clicking her claws against the back of it. "That's wonderful to hear. Come back once you've gotten everything on there, and I'll provide you with the next list." "Will do!" ~ "Two down, one to go [i]hopefully[/i]." Slania sighed. Why did hatchlings have to be so difficult? They were crossing their claws that the next one they found would be the one that hatched from the egg. Violin was already covering for them, and Waipo was sure to come over soon if they didn't report back within the next hour. "No use complaining. Get back to it, just like she always said..."
