The resulting fumes rendered her immediately unconscious. As she fell, the bogsneak hit her head heavily on the stone of the lab walls and was thoroughly incapacitated. Ihima, distracted by the experiment he was conducting with Myfi, had left the lab early with no plans to return. The dragon may have laid there, insensible and breathing in more noxious vapors, if Cirrostratus hadn't come by looking for the alchemist. She found Anenome on the floor, bloody and out like a light, and immediately called for aid. "Sweetdew!" She rushed to take the imperial from the dryad, babbling thanks the entire time. The dryad seemed nonplussed. It faded back into the foliage alongside the road and disappeared. "You know this little blue wyrm?" Ambers muttered under his breath to the guardian. He was looking at the child dubiously. "Yes!" Varda said. She looked radiant. Sweetdew was gurgling happily among her large paws. "It was the two of us traveling through the wood when those river mucks attacked. I thought- I thought they'd gotten her!" Close inspection revealed that there were some healing acid burns on the hatchling's tail and side. The dryads had applied some sort of herbal salve to the wounds. "Why didn't you say anything?" Ambers asked. He thought the two of them had no secrets from each other. "I thought she was dead." Varda said simply, "And two of your friends had just fallen. It didn't seem right to... intrude on your grief." Sweetdew rolled onto her back between the two adult dragons and raised her paws in the air, kneading happily. "Think of her like training for when our nest hatches!" Varda laughed. Ambers snorted. She was pretty cute, he had to admit to himself. His nest was due to hatch today and he didn't want to spend a moment apart from them! But Varda had insisted that he smelled like something atrocious and she didn't want their hatchlings' first impression of him to be A Stink. They were both exhausted and wrung out on nerves. How Varda was still awake, Ambers couldn't imagine. Something to do with the supposed Guardian dragon vigilance, probably. Ambers snorted underwater and watched the bubbles wiggle from his snout to the surface. Okay, enough. This would have to be good enough. He squirmed out of the bathwater and got dried off quickly. Another snort to himself - at least he didn't have hair or fur like some of the other dragons! It was easy to wick away moisture from his scales and wings, barely a moment's work. On damp feet he galumphed like a ferret back to the nesting hall. Aside from their nest, Ihima and Kasha had a single egg. Compared to some of the rowdier early days when the hall had been chock full of eggs and hatchlings, it seemed pretty quiet by comparison. Actually. It felt entirely too quiet. Ambers trotted into the hall and his feet were still moving even as his mind reeled in shock. Varda was gone. Herene was- Herene lay over her one half-sibling's egg cradling something else under one of her fuzzy arms. She was drenched in blood and her eyes were unfocused. Blood trailed from her to the other nest, where eggs lay smashed and their contents torn apart. Ambers raced towards her, ready to finish off the nestling murdering tundra if it was the last thing he did. Herene rattled faintly when his claws seized her fur and pulled her up. Her head lolled. "T-tried..." she whispered, "t'stop h-her..." Ambers realized that the blood coming from Herene was her own. Deep gouges were carved across her head, shoulders and wings. Defensive wounds. He let go of his sharp grip on her neck and she slumped back to the ground without resistance. "Who was "she"?!" Ambers snarled even as he whirled to check. The hall was empty. There was no one else there, and whatever blood the nestling killer had on them hadn't left a trail. Herene didn't answer. She lay very still. A small twitch of movement from under her dark fur caught Ambers' wild eyes. A flash of pink scale. The smallest guardian he had even seen poked its snout out from under the tundra and cheeped pathetically at Ambers. He scooped the child up and cradled it fiercely. One survivor from his firstborns. He wasn't going to let anything happen to this hatchling. Ever. Grief, rage and bewilderment escaped from Ambers' throat in a shuddering, shrieking howl. It echoed through the castle and drew others to the unexpected carnage of the nest halls. By this point in the kingdom, it was unspoken rule that nobody left Briarbloom Castle alone if it could be helped. And so, Ferris found himself out wandering the meadows with the giant silent shadow of Kadere alongside of him. They worked in companionable quiet. Ferris knew that some dragons found Kadere to be intimidating or unnerving, but not him. He didn't mind the silence. It was the dark imperial who had first brought him out of the woods and into the kingdom, after all. Ferris had grown up alongside Kadere's biological daughter, Kadoe, as if he were her brother. He knew much of Kadere's silence stemmed from loss. "That looks like plenty to me." Ferris commented. He surveyed the collection of growing things that they'd gathered. It was almost too much to carry! "Thanks for the help, Kadere." He looked up at the larger dragon and smiled. A small, fond smile replied on Kadere's dark face. Just for a moment, before it disappeared back to his usual impassive glance. He nodded once. The dup set off back towards the castle, lost in their own thoughts. Ferrs was still smiling, now to himself imagining how Careeli was going to be so pleased with all the new plants. They had no idea of the dark events that had transpired while they were gone. Her claws shook as she poured one potion into another. Droplets spilled and hissed against the surface of her workbench. Kadoe hissed too. She WANTED to throw the bottle down and watch it smash against the floor. She WANTED to scream in rage and fear at who among her friends and family could be so unexpectedly dangerous. Instead she set the bottle down with a barely controlled arm. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Bad idea. The smell of chemicals scorched her sensitive nostrils. She gagged and wheeled away from the workbench, eyes streaming. Kadoe tore out of the alchemy workrooms and into the hallway. She breathed raggedly and blinked to clear her eyes. There was no peace in potions for her today. Usually she could lose herself in the work. Concocting this or that to help the kingdom, harm those who attacked them, and inspire dragon's forms and patterns to change. But not today. She felt like there wasn't enough air inside. Kadoe wheezed. Without conscious thought, the mirror scrambled up twisting staircases until she came out on the top of one of the castle towers. She clung to the arches of stone that made up the walls and stared out at the valley around them. It was a beautiful morning, full of bright sunshine cutting through fluffy clouds. It was all wrong. Herene was dead. She should have been here to share the scenery with her friend. Kadoe wept. When there was finally a break in her tears, Kadoe felt wrung out and exhausted. She slumped down to the floor of the tower and sprawled there in misery. Her notebook lay under her hip at an uncomfortable angler, and she extracted it. Something else she wanted to chuck away. Instead, Kadoe opened to a blank page. Filled with a tired and grey sort of determination, so slipped the charcoal out of its attached case and brought it to bear on the empty page. [i]Herene[/i] She remembered the softness of her friend's eyes. The way the fur at her jaw would curl out just so. With hesitant scribbles at first, and then more confident sweeping lines, Kadoe began to draw her lost friend.
