Sadly, I am realizing I'm part of the problem, I definitely offer a lot of XXX and XXY pairs in my hatchery ^^;;;;. I always thought Stock The Pond was about breeding Exalt fodder for festivals, boy was I wrong! I'm so glad I stumbled into this thread! I want to give back some rando dergs, too! And I thought, "Hey, I have a ton of XXX's in my lair, surely I already own an opposite pair.... Wouldn't you know it, my longtime rivals Dawnbringer and GorotholKutomo are perfect opposites!!! :D Gold and Shadow, Light and Dark, it's a classic pairing, I'm so thrilled! I can't wait to see what happens when these two enemies-to-lovers get together XD. And you know how it is when you discover a fun new thing... O_O I lost my whole afternoon to Scrying potential pond pairs! XD I found this PERFECT Mantis match for my girl, Edel! I love green and pink dragons, they remind me of flowers. And breeding the two has all kinds of Naturey potential! So how do we know what color combos are needed/rare? Where do you look and see that?

This post on the first page has a list of every color and who's breeding for it, but it's quite out of date. Should still give you a rough idea of which colors are really big and which ones are more niche, though.

At the end of the day, every color already exists in someone's pond. My personal advice is to start by figuring out a budget for your starters, roll up some colors or pick one you like, and keep looking until you find a pair that's in budget. You'll help no matter what.

No problem! I'm three pairs in now, so I've referenced it a few times. Killer luck with my nests today, too. This project is shockingly rewarding if you get into it.

The biggest thing I try to remember in that regard is that the color wheel is finite, but circular. Pairs are designed to get the largest physically possible amount of color variance. So inevitably, all possible outcomes get covered by dozens and dozens of pairs with any combination of starting points. In the event you can't find a good hole, you'll still know you're helping as much as any other pair. :)
