lore: the Sun is Also a Star
When the universe was first made, there were no stars: only the sun. The night sky was empty, dead and dark from horizon to horizon, a cold echoing void through which Nyx drifted. The night sky was her domain, but it was too sterile to need tending, and Nyx lived for dusk and dawn only, when she might catch a glimpse of the sun's radiant brightness chasing away her empty skies.

One morning she lingered even as the light pushed back her darkness, fascinated by the sun's beauty. She lingered until the sun truly woke, retreating so slowly that, for the first time, the sun saw her as she vanished.

The sun was Daz's domain, brilliant and powerful, full of light and necessary for life. Each day he traced his path through the sky and each night he slept. And while many knew his domain and gave thanks for his light, there was no one else in the endless skies to keep him company. He passed that day distracted by thoughts of the flash of wings as shimmering dark as the night.

At dusk, Nyx again lingered, and this time saw that Daz had seen her. Again at dawn they stole glimpses of each other. Longer and longer Nyx lingered at either end of the day, while Daz hurried the sun to see her again.

He shed flame and flecks of light through the sky in his haste, faint reflections of the brilliance of the sun. Nyx collected them and hung them in her darkness, tending them until they became the first stars. She cared for them so well that the brightest remained visible even in daylight, tokens of their unspoken love. Nyx's unending black became a wash of deep shadowed purples and blues as her garden of stars grew.

In starlight Nyx's domain grew beautiful and inviting. She gathered the light of the stars and the sparks the sun continued to shed, and with them crafted the moon.

Hidden behind the moon, Nyx could linger an entire day, closer to Daz than ever before. The sun and moon danced around each other in a heavenly waltz that at last brought the two deities together. The moon hid the sun, turning day into night for a time and casting the world into unnatural darkness.

Frightened and angered, the other gods severed Daz from the sun and tore down Nyx's stars and cast the pair into the void. Without the sun to shed light, there would be no second star garden, but they did not despair: the sun is also a star, and Daz will always be lord of the sun, and together they found a new way to make better, brighter stars.

The void will shine with starlight again, because love cannot be broken, and life will always find a way.

lore: Lost Myself in the Void
There is only one place as awe-inspiring, as beautiful, as mysterious, as terrifying as space: the ocean.

There is a place where the ocean is deepest, where no mortal soul can hope to go, where even sunlight cannot reach. This dark and pressing abyss is where currents form, and it is here that Jael rules.

Jael spun her currents in contented solitude, unbothered by the dark and the crushing pressure of the miles of ocean above her, for eons. She had never known companionship, for even gods found her depths unbearable, and one cannot miss what one has never known.

Jael's peaceful eternity was punctuated by sudden, brief interruptions of leviathans and earthquakes, but did not even know what a mortal was until Astraeus found her.

The Astraeus was an exploratory vessel, an enclosed ship of metal and magic welded by mortal hands, designed and built to challenge the ocean itself. He was a mighty vessel, proud and much beloved by his crew, so much so that he grew into something greater, something alive.

The ocean is not something which can be beaten or dominated, however, and anyone who challenges it is doomed to fail. Despite all their knowledge and all their predictions, Astraeus's makers could not build him well enough to survive all that the ocean could do to him.

Astraeus was a bent and twisted vessel when he came to rest on the ocean floor, his hull buckled and his crew dead, a newborn soul broken by loss and defeat and consigned to know nothing more than that.

Drawn by the commotion, Jael found her way to the broken ship. She learned of mortals and how fragile and brave they were, how deeply they could love even that which they did not know was alive. She learned of the soul their love had given him and the pain their loss had awoken in it.

Astraeus spoke to her of the surface, of the voyage that had brought him here. He told her of his short life, and in return she told him of her long one. Time passed, and Jael learned what companionship was. Learned what love felt like. Learned fear, at the thought that Astraeus might one day return to the surface and leave her behind, for just as few can survive in Jael's depths, Jael cannot survive outside of them.

Time marched onward as Jael helped Astraeus repair himself, strengthening his hide and blessing his bones. She helped him give each of his crew what he termed a 'proper burial'. She continued to spin her currents as the day when Astraeus was finally whole crept closer.

At last, she could stand the fear no longer. She confessed her fear and begged him to stay with her, to not cast her back to the emptiness that had come before him. Astraeus swore to her that he had never intended to leave her. That there was nothing waiting for him on the surface, that he had only truly gained life here in the depths and that he could not imagine leaving her or the graves of his crew.

There is a place where the ocean is deepest, where no mortal soul can hope to go, where even sunlight cannot reach. Here is where currents and monsters are born, where love exceeds the impossible, where Jael and Astraeus rule.

lore: Lost Kings Fallen in the Mist
Obscurity is a fate which makes gods and kings tremble. To be forgotten, to fade, to be lost beneath the crushing wheel of time's indifference, is a fate which the greatest of mortals fear most.

Obscurity is a fate Fleet welcomed.

Long ago, so long ago that the kingdom in which it took place is little more than a myth, Fleet waged war. He fought great and terrible battles that toppled kings and scarred the land down to bedrock. He led attacks against allegedly impregnable cities and watched their walls crumble. He stood atop castles and fortresses and roared his victory to the sky, so that those below would know of his latest conquest.

Through violence and bloodshed, Fleet amassed an empire, but empires built on death have a habit of attracting hate. Fleet crossed the wrong dragon once too often, and the price of his power came home to roost.

Fleet's empire died around him, torn asunder from within, falling into kingdoms and wilds. His loyal army died, his subjects fled or turned on him, and Fleet was driven out of the lands he once held. Alone in the wilds, unable to find death of his own, he instead found Shimmer.

Shimmer was a curious goddess. She kept those fallen that the world did not remember as her domain, and under her power were many minor kings and lords forgotten before the wave of Fleet's conquest. She found the warrior-king alone and far from home, hanging tantalizingly within her reach but not yet close enough to take.

Shimmer came daily to visit with Fleet, to learn more of what mortals still remembered. Each day he swayed in that same space just beyond her grasp. He faded from the world's memory as time went on, but he never died. He was forgotten but could never be fallen, and therefore could never be Shimmer's.

Fleet, as entranced by the dark goddess as she was by him, found himself grateful for the curse that barred him from death. Forgotten but unfallen, there was nothing to keep him with Shimmer, or Shimmer with him, but their own wishes. Nothing binding them but their own hearts.

Fleet welcomed obscurity, for it put him in Shimmer's path. He welcomes immortality, for it gives him eternity with a curious dark goddess, untouched by time, and no empire he could ever have ruled would make him half so content as she does.
