So many of them lay around him, gasping, drowning in the haze of tear gas that loaded the room. Through the mist that hung heavy in the air, he could just make out the shadows and shapes of creatures moving about through the area. Hopefully it was members of his gang getting away. He heard screams, moans, and crying around him, ghastly and unearthly. Suddenly, a weight landed on his back, and still choking on tears and eyes streaming, he was unable to move. He had been planning this robbery of a while now. Tracking the fancy dancy owners of the house, learning their patterns, mapping their estate.... he had thought that he was ready. And if it had been simply him, maybe even Rave, it would have been fine. They had snuck in without any trouble. No one was home aside from a butler. ...or so they had thought. The sudden appearance of a dragon from the gardens, covered in plants and small insects, had set all of them off balance. And now the team was paying the price for it. Especially Merda. Dawnknight shed a tear, thinking of his old friend. She had stayed behind to fight the plant dragon, and allow as many to escape as possible. He had seen her fall himself- seen her not get back up. He would need to be so, so careful going forward. No more friends destroyed in one sweoop. Ah well. Profits: 22,547t Notes: As much as the spade gang members had been dreading the new leadership of Maghnus, they had seen... much less of him than they had anticipated. Almost as soon as he had announced that Arnold had appointed him the new leader as he lay dying from the attack on the old hideout, he had brought in a few of his new friends. The 3 new dragons seemed.... capable enough, for what the spade gang saw of them. Mainly they spent all their time with Maghnus in his 'war room', planning... something top secret, apparently. He did very little in the aspect of day to day matters other than to strut around and tell everyone to go out and do petty crimes. Mostly unsupervised, rumors abounded among the older members. Raodral and Rufus paired up and went out to steal almost every day, bringing home chests of gold. Raina suspected that perhaps they were colluding on some plan of their own and biding their time. Or maybe they were lovers now. Either or. Liberator just sort of lounged around the lair, reading up on more sleight of hand, and practicing card tricks. TigersEye and Altamahaha... indulged in each other. Whereas Raina only suspected that Raodral and Rufus may be lovers, it was quite obvious that TigersEye and Altamahaha were most undoubtedly lovers. They even had eggs to prove it, though only she had been invited in to see their secret love nest. Raina herself felt like she just rattled around the new hideout, uneeded and questioning everything. Why was she still here? She had been loyal to Arnold- with him from the beginning. Without him in charge, she felt hollow. And on top of that, this new Maghnus guy- he gave her weird vibes. He hadn't done anything yet to prove her fears, but she didn't trust him. She didn't trust his rise to power. Why would Arnold choose him? Why not her? She had been around the longest, was more than qualified... She sighed, her thoughts still twisting. Perhaps she was overthinking this; maybe she was simply jealous that Arnold must have seen something in Maghnus that he didn't in herself. She would just have to bide her time for now and ride out any potential storm in the future. (Fun note- Raina is the last dragon standing from my original start-up gangs!) He found me, told me about it, and then darted off because he wanted to warn you. I'm bigger, so I had to take the long way around. In the hallway one over, I found her, standing over him. ...She had stabbed him." His eyes got a sad, but also triumphant gleam to them. "I crushed her like the traitorous cockroach she was." Here, the fight seemed to finally fall out of the guardian. "I... I am gonna go find a place to bury Rollo. Poor kid. Cut so short." He continued to mumble as he walked out with Rollo's body gently tucked into his hand, and Rave's randomly stuffed into a satchel at his waist. Dawnknight rubbed his face. This was too much to take in. So much was moving so fast.... too fast. Even now he was scheduled to interview another few potential gang members. He took a deep breath, his poker face making his already hard-to-read fae expression nigh incomprehensible. Parker poked his snout into the office, unaware of the morning's happenings. "They're here boss! Hope you're ready!" And he disappeared. A single ripple of sadness ran down Dawnknight's frills. He wasn't- but he would have to be. The world didn't end. It only felt like it did. The spiral was already winding up the staircase in double-time, and the pair met partway. The spiral gave her a delicate kiss to each cheek, and the boss of the hearts gang, for all her propriety, instantly wrapped the spiral in a tight hug. "It is so good to see you, old friend! I never thought to find you way out here!" The spiral gave a chuckle as he swirled out of her hug to wrap around the railing. "Eh, all those fancy parties over in Light get to be a bore. Raodral attacked Hesperus- but since Isis is his best friend, she took the hit instead! ...thankfully she had a familiar attached, so she gets to live another day. ;) Roadral knew he couldn't hang around after his botched attempt, so he fled to the Clubs Gang hideout. Deaths: none Profits: Unimportant. Notes: Hesperus stared in utter disbelief. He didn't even twitch a whisker, so shocked was he at the sudden events. Isis was pinning him to wall as well, so even if he wanted to move, it would be quite difficult. Without warning, that little nocturne, Raodral, had leaped across the room with a blade made of elemental energy! It surely would have killed Hesperus if Isis hadn't jumped into it's path to take the blow in his stead. Now her sides were heaving, and blood dripped down her shoulder from where the blade was dug into the scales. Raodral's face looked just as shocked as Hesperus at the sudden intrusion. Isis let out a growl, blood starting to pool below her. Raodral seemed to suddenly snap to his senses, and dashed for an open window, wriggling through and disappearing into the night. With the imminent threat gone, Isis turned her enormous head to look at Hesperus, still pinned to the wall. He saw the feral ferocity in her features, but a softness glowed at the back of her eyes before they closed and she collapsed. "Good...." her great chest heaved the sound out before she passed out from pain and shock. Suddenly freed from his constraint, Hesperus leaped over, and instantly started to attend to her wound. Her act surprised him. He didn't really take her as the protective sort, but here she was. His words a few days before must have really struck a cord in her. Well then, it certainly wouldn't do to let her down now, or ever. They were a pair. Nothing was going to shake that. As he deftly started to clean and bandage the wound, a sneer came over the pearlcatcher's features. That little nocturne would pay for this! He was almost always under the influence, they had all but stopped with any sort of coordinated missions, and he had essentially shut himself into his office. Yes, it was a shock knowing that someone had it out for you. BUT. That was simply all a part of the package of being on this side of the law! He had followed the voice's directions into an old storage room off the sewers. The room would have been much smaller, but an internal wall had been knocked down, letting it connect to another small room, and a series of tunnels. It would need work, but it was a start. And it was well defendable. No surprises. ...aside from a worker. The tundra had been surprised by the new gang boss' appearance, but she had quickly been convinced to join his gang. After all, it had to be better than running sewer maintenance. A few others found their way through the tunnels not long after, drawn by the mysterious voice. Admittedly, Elbereth was a little creeped out by the whole thing the longer he thought about it. All he knew of the voice was that it had two pairs of glowing eyes that he would occasionally catch looking at him from shadowy tunnels before disappearing. He would have to watch his step, or his newfound position could quickly be pulled out from under him... A few of the larger members managed to scrub him up and then tuck him into his bunk. The older members meanwhile, began to whisper. Just what had he found? What had taken Furyfang? Why was he in the sewers in the first place? And did it have anything to do with EldritchBlast's disappearance a few days before? Mysteries that would all need to be unraveled once he was well again, hopefully. He could tell that she was bored and in pain, no matter how well she hid it. His feet unbidden led him around the city's back alleys as his mind whirled. He only stopped short when he tripped over a pile of fur. Shaking his head to clear it of stars, he looked more closely at the impediment. Slowly, the head of a bedraggled, half-starved hatchling appeared out of the curled ball. Gently, Hesperus stood up, and reached out to it. Instantly his hand recoiled as the creature took a snap at him. It eyed him warily, eyes full of pain. Looking closer, he could see why- the creature's shoulders were full of shards of pale gray stones. Dried blood matted the fur around them. Most likely they had been there for quite some time. More gingerly, he moved closer. The hatchling defiantly stood its ground, despite apparent fear and pain. With a deft movement, he picked the hatchling up with one hand grasped around its mouth to keep it from biting, and the other around its back to hold it close against his chest. The stones dug into his scales as the hatchling squirmed, whining and trying to get free. He held tight, talking in a low, soothing voice. Eventually, it gave up, exhausted. Finally, Hesperus awkwardly took off, carrying the hatchling back to his hideout. He knew a bored imperial who would simply love another dragon to fuss over. They are really close now! Deaths: none Story: Nammon couldn't help but feel sorry for Raodral. Dawnknight may not have been one heck of a leader at the moment, but at least he cared. From how Raodral spoke of him, the old Spade's leader Arnold had been a great guy. This new Maghnus fellow... he definitely sounded like a shady character. And yeah, they were all thieves and hireclaws, but if you didn't look out for your gang, then who in the blooming world could you trust? It just all felt so backwards and broken. So Nammon stayed close to him. Raodral also spoke often of his friend Rufus- he really missed him, and worried for his safety. Admittedly, Nammon felt like there was very little he could do, short of plan some sort of 'jail break' to get all his old friends out from under Maghnus' rule. So, he just would sit and listen, and did his best to support his new friend. And for his part, Raodral seemed to appreciate the support. He had almost forgotten what it was like to have an entire gang that supported you, and listened, rather than keep secrets and whispers. Maybe he could grow to like it here. ...heck, maybe Nammon's plan even had some merit to it. One day, perhaps, they really could bring Maghnus' rule to an end... Story: EldritchBlast trotted down the streets and alleys, whistling a merry tune. The Voice had told him about a secret back entrance into some fancy rich dragon's estate. It was a piece of cake to nab a few pricey prizes... as well as a few hatchlings. The little things were mewling and crying, but they would learn soon enough. The Voice would speak to them too, and then they would be happy for their fates. Suddenly from above, a form pounced onto his back, pinning him to the ground. The hatchlings squealed in shock, tumbling from his back and shoulders. "Just where do you think you are going?!" The hissing maw of a banescale was just inches from EldritchBlaste. "I was keeping watch on this place- it was our score to take! And here you are, kidnapping from it! We are all thieves and all, I get it, but taking money is one thing. Taking children?! You are despicable!" EldritchBlast merely hissed at the intruder, too taken aback to form words. He lunged at the banescale on his back, and the two broke into a violent fight, puncuated by the screams of the tiny hatchlings. After an endless few moments, EldritchBlast leaned back, wiping blood from his maw. "Yeah, I'm taking hatchlings. I am taking their lives, just like I took yours. Only difference is that you won't be joining the gang." He spat on her body, the bloody spittle mixing with the rest of her wounds. "They will grow up to be fine members." The tundra picked up the hatchlings once more, and disappeared into the alleys. From his place peeking out from a sewer grate, a spiral watched closely, dismayed by what he saw. He had felt that things were wrong with the new Diamond Gang, but he didn't realize it was this bad. He would have to see what he could do for those hatchlings now, as well as suss out whatever dark thrumming was running beneath the city streets.... They find some good fortune along the way, in the form of a new familiar, and a plague priest! The first afternoon that they weren't scheduled for training, they ducked into the nearest sewer grate they could find, and started searching. Highhide quickly befriended a sludge sifter, and with its help they navigated the maze of the underground with ease. They found quite a few interesting things.... rooms with locked doors, a wrought iron gate that they could see blocked off someone's secret wine cellar, loads of forgotten or abandoned items, like a random red couch and a piano.... and eventually, a plague dragon. He claimed that he had been down here testing his survival skills. That being such a filthy place helped him commune with the Plaguebringer, being that he was a priest and all, and that he had been waiting for something. A sign. Shortly after, when they found a glowing plague rune carved into the wall, the plagueling howled with joy, claiming it to be his sign. He was meant to help them! The two dragons looked at each other, hesitantly. Not because of the new member- he was nice enough- but because of the rune itself. Strong plague energy emanated off of the carving. Dense enough to make them feel ill just from standing too close. Intense enough that it most likely was having some strong effects on the wildlife down here. They would have to get some more intel, and then come check back on this later.... Altamahaha nuzzled up against her mate's face, memorizing every scent, the feel of his scales, his quick, light heartbeat. "I trust you, my love. Just promise me that you will be safe." The spiral slowly uncoiled from the nest, pressing himself tighter to his mate's side. "I will, knowing that you are praying for me." And without another word, the spiral slipped away, disappearing into the alleys behind the hideout, before diving down a sewer grate to the darkness below. The group came back to the hideout several hours later, loaded down with stolen goods, and feeling proud. A note was pinned to the table in the hideout's lounge. "Gang, I am sorry. I have let you all down. I have let myself down. I cannot accept that. I am not made for this lifestyle as I thought. Columbus has offered to escort me to somewhere away from here where we can both live in peace, away from the gang wars. I wish you all the best. I love you all very much, and want you to succeed. You would never have done as much with me still in charge. You will be great! -Dawnknight" The gang couldn't muster an ounce of surprise. What was surprising, though, was the lack of Mimic. She hadn't made her rendezvous earlier during the heist, and the rest had assumed that she was here at the hideout. But she was nowhere to be found. And unlike their former leader, they didn't have a note to explain what had happened. They would just have to hope that she was out and would come back on her own.
