The area was unusually clean, for a building in the Wasteland, though the effect of the local duststorms was obvious. A few pews had been rearranged into desks, with communication devices placed on top of them. The three dragons glanced at each other, Kuro taking the lead. "Do you happen to know anything about curses?" he asked aloud. A black Pearlcatcher, eyes marked by Plague magic, broke away from his task and approached with all the eagerness of a businessman. "Welcome, welcome!" he exclaimed, faction lines apparently notwithstanding. "I think I would be best versed in such topics - many undead afflictions are the result of curses. In fact, I even suspect some dragons here may be reanimated because of those sorts of circumstances. Now, truth be told I'm not quite an expert in curses... But I'm sure I could do my best to answer whatever questions plague you!" The three dragons glanced around warily, now noticing the occasional dragon wrapped in bandages, or bearing more realistic bone markings than most. Kurozuki lowered his voice out of respect for them. Clearly, they had misjudged what kind of help these people normally offered. "Well, our question is twofold, I suppose: how to break a curse put on our clanmates, and how to kill the mage who cast it, if he is undead." Seacrest supplied, "It would explain why he keeps attacking us, even when he has seemed clearly dead." The Pearlcatcher froze. Seacrest and Kurozuki winced inwardly, while Lunus cast an apologetic glance. "Well... know... know that I couldn't endorse doing the latter, but I could perhaps offer the advice that someone who would endorse the action would give. But, regarding your, um, first question... Again, I'm no expert, but typically curses are tied to something. An item, an individual, a location, or a condition, something like that. You'd need to disengage or destroy the first two in some way, but the condition would require solving. I'm sure it doesn't apply to the curse you're all faced with, but surely you've heard of the cliché 'true love's kiss' thing, right? That's a good example of a condition which must be fulfilled. For a location, you could all try to leave, but it could follow along. If you don't know what this curse is tied to, then your solution may lie in your second question." They clutched their pearl tightly, running a claw along its side with clear anxiety. "Now... now, to kill the undead... I would try to banish him first. This means, at least according to my own theories, forcing the soul to 'ascend' through some manner of ritual which would likely require a specialist. The process is typically like an exorcism, but far more rigorous and even riskier. It may not be an option, however, so... killing him may have to suffice. The methods definitely depend on what type of undead affliction you're dealing with; typically holy or blessed weaponry will kill or violently banish an undead individual, but some varieties of affliction will react to more... physical methods. Fire, sunlight, stakes, recreating the original cause and location of death... All valid options to consider. But, unless you know for sure what he's been reanimated as, I can't offer any confident solution." The Pearlcatcher sighed. "But, if you do know, I can't exactly guarantee my solutions will work, either. These things are always case-by-case, and my role is typically to help the undead discover and avoid these newfound threats by personally working with them. If this really is so pressing, though, I'll do my best to help, and send you off with whatever methods of... trouble alleviation I can think of." Lunus stepped forward, worry clear on his face. "We're sorry we even have to ask this. The curse was placed on two of the original members of our clan. He declared that until their blood was gone from their children's veins, only one child would live out of each generation. After he was killed - in the words of another, 'defeated for the first time' - he extended the some of the curse's effects to everyone in the entire clan. Eggs without dragons, constant fear of death. We just want to live in peace. I... I've lost two of my sons to this curse, and eggs. Kurozuki and I lost a sister, and only one of Seacrest's hatchlings really grew up." He scuffled his feet, then glanced back at the Pearlcatcher pleadingly. "If we give you what we know about him, could you help us develop a strategy?" The Pearlcatcher swallowed, then sighed sadly and nodded. He glanced at each dragon, nodding with more confidence. "Yes, I could help - of course, I could help. I'm... You shouldn't have to apologize, I understand the gravity of the situation. I'm sorry that I've got to be so flighty about this. I'm no stranger to death, and no stranger to plots of this caliber... I want to help you and your clan in any way I can manage." All three relaxed. "Thank you," Kurozuki said with heartfelt gratitude. "So here is what we do know..." Quickly, he began to outline what they knew about the mysterious personage who had cursed their clan - his power as a mage, his changing appearance, his ability to feign death. Hours later, they emerged from the cathedral, a scroll in hand and renewed determination in their hearts. Kei swooped down from a parapet. "Any luck?" he called. "We've got it! We've got an answer!" Lunus called, elated. "We'll tell you on the way. Right now, we need to get this back to everyone else." Kurozuki waved the scroll tucked in his claws. "What is it?" Kei asked. "A spell for finding things," Kuro replied. "It might be the key to breaking the curse." A week of hard flying later, they reached the lair. But only one hatchling emerged. --------------------------------- Beryl has survived, and python is officially eliminated after five generations! Sorry this one was a bit long, I meant to split this conversation in two but didn't exactly get on the past couple of days. Thanks again to @Drakessis for letting me use this conversation! (And yes, that is a trinket, i figured adding in the chest rewards would make this too long.)

@fenshae @TheAwesoMew @Farsidejr @ZippoFeuer @Coexistence Ugh... this hurts... --------------------------------------------------------- Zephyr was creating little updrafts for the hatchlings to play with. Spirals of dirt and leaves swirled about on the floor of the little clearing in front of the cave, and the skydancers would scatter after them like familiars after a favorite toy. While she and Ariox couldn't have any more hatchlings themselves - Windsinger knew they'd tried - she could make do with her descendants. What were they, her great-great grandchildren? The pale one, Koralo, let out a triumphant cry as he pounced one twister into nonexistence. Zephyr giggled. Fierce, that one. He reminded her of one of her own... A shiver in the foliage was all the warning they got. A massive bird dived down, swooping back up with one of Koralo's brothers. A second one, dived down as well, leaving behind blue and yellow feathers. Mercuria leaped into the air from her post above the entrance, trailing sparks as she charged the circling beasts. Zephyr quickly coiled over the last hatchling left, Beryl, hoping her size would be enough to deter any other attackers. Claws dug holes in her wings and gashes in her scales, but she would not give in. ------------------------------------------------- I'm really, really sad now :(

Kurozuki's pronunciation was met with some level of fear on the part of the Imperials present. That kind of undead was too close to an Emperor for comfort. "But there is a way to stop him, right?" Sakurako asked. "Yes," Kuro answered. "If we can find the Darkmage's phy-lac-te-ry" - he had to sound the word out every time he used it - "we can kill him for good. The Pearlcatcher, Elysium, gave us a spell that might help us track it down, as long as we can borrow a mage or two from grandfather's clan." "They probably wouldn't mind," Mercuria noted. "I bet they'd send Louhi, even, once they knew why." "Whatever it takes." That came from Ariox. He hadn't left that dark corner in days, not drinking or eating or apparently even sleeping. Now, however, he spoke, his voice rough from disuse. "We'll do whatever it takes. We have to." The Mirror's green eyes burned as the rest of those present nodded in agreement. They'd lost too much to back out of the fight now that they had a weapon to use. The scroll was placed in the hoard, with the rest of the gold collected that day. "For now, let's take care of a more immediate concern," Sakurako stated. "We have a way to stop the Darkmage once and for all. First, lets find out where he is."

@fenshae @TheAwesoMew @Farsidejr @ZippoFeuer @Coexistence I'm back! College kind of sucks. As does accidentally breeding the 9th gen mate with the wrong male dragon without realizing it. But hey, trying to get back in the game here, and now I've got a little time to bring in some story for the new dragon. Group 3 is in the coli today: Kurozuki, Lunus, and Seacrest. ------------------------------------------- Three days to home! Lunus couldn't help but get excited, thinking of it. How was the clan, since they'd last left? How were his parents, and mechanical aunt and uncle, and Ariox? What of Ariox's several descendants? The overhanging curse darkened his thoughts. How was Beryl, the youngest of them, the next one to be hit? They'd begun coming back after a letter caught them at the Sundial Ruins - Lunus felt it's weight in the bag he carried. We found Ambrosius. He wants to meet you. To Lunus, it felt like that previous homecoming all over again, but twice as bad. His own family could forgive him, but what about the son he'd abandoned? Seacrest swooped in closer. "Try not to think too hard about it." "Were my thoughts that obvious?" "Yes," the graceful skydancer replied simply. "Don't dwell on him. He wouldn't have reached out if he didn't want to see you." "Is that the same principle you used for Arya and Irving?" Lunus inquired. Seacrest tilted his head. "Yes, I suppose so." Something large whooshed through the air. It sailed off to the left, missing everyone. "Where did that come from?" Kurozuki demanded. "There!" Kei pointed, just as another rock sailed just below the group's feet. The very rocks attached to the nearby mountains seemed to be coming alive, throwing themselves into the air. Lunus didn't care if it was natural or not, just that he didn't get hit. Whump! A boulder stung his tail as it went past. A glimpse of Kei, almost knocked out of the air. Kuro in his armor, ducking and weaving despite the storm of rocks. Minutes stretched into hours, but the mountains quickly fell away. "I told you that they had legends about these mountains for a reason!" Kuro snarled at Kei. "You had to break off and go through here!" "I'm sorry!" Kei protested. Lunus spoke up. "Where's Seacrest?" ------------------------------------------------------- And I guess all good things must quickly come to an end. Seacrest got utterly annihilated in the coliseum today. Not sure if he had low health or what; just completely one-shot. I didn't really care so much for him or his character, but I'm gonna miss him all the same.

I'm back!

Three days to home!

"Try not to think too hard about it."

"Were my thoughts that obvious?"

"Yes," the graceful skydancer replied simply. "Don't dwell on him. He wouldn't have reached out if he didn't want to see you."

"Is that the same principle you used for Arya and Irving?" Lunus inquired.

Seacrest tilted his head. "Yes, I suppose so."

Something large whooshed through the air.

"I told you that they had legends about these mountains for a reason!" Kuro snarled at Kei. "You had to break off and go through here!"

"I'm sorry!" Kei protested.

Lunus spoke up. "Where's Seacrest?"

And I guess all good things must quickly come to an end. Seacrest got utterly annihilated in the coliseum today. Not sure if he had low health or what; just completely one-shot. I didn't really care so much for him or his character, but I'm gonna miss him all the same.

@ZippoFeuer Doing homework for 5 classes and studying to CLEP a 6th tomorrow. I hate leaving things unfinished, though, and FlightRising is a nice, less-time consuming alternative to other games I was playing.

Thanks for the welcome back!

:o Welcome back!! It's always a joy to get these pings--I'm so excited to see where this goes as it winds down to the last generations!

I can sympathize with your college dilemmas XD Currently in my second-ever semester and struggling to manage both my classes and the half-dozen writing projects I've picked up lol

@TheAwesoMew This was supposed to be my last semester lol. Then I'm told I'm missing a single credit hour. ONE MEASLY CREDIT!

And yeah, me too. I'm so ready to see what the 10th generation will look like. I suspect more greens and blues, but hope to upgrade the mate to a wildclaw. Now if only the 9th gen mate would speed up her breeding cooldown... at this rate she won't be ready until after spring break. There isn't something to speed that up that I could pay out my butt for, is there?
